Book excerpt: This book examines a broad range of advances in hydrogen energy and alternative fuel developments and their role in the energy transition. The respective contributions were presented at the International Symposium on Sustainable Hydrogen, held in Algiers, Algeria on November 27-28, 2019. The transition from non-renewable polluting energy to sustainable green energy requires not only new energy sources but also new storage techniques and smart energy management. This situation has sparked renewed interest in hydrogen and alternative fuels, as they could help meet these needs. Indeed, hydrogen can not only be used as a clean energy vector or as an alternative fuel, but also as a storage medium or as an intermediary that enables improved energy management. This text offers a valuable reference guide for those working in the professional energy sector, as well as for students and instructors in academia who want to learn about the state of the art and future directions in the fields of hydrogen energy, alternative fuels and sustainable energy development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-energy catalytic processes operated in fixed bed reactors are widely used in many fields of chemical engineering, so the improvement of specific intensities of such processes to minimise the equipment size and related capital cost, to enhance the reliability is of great importance. The specific features of such processes are reactant concentration gradients through the bed length which may cause considerable temperature gradients in exo-endothermic reactions; therefore, the catalysts used for the existing and innovative high-energy catalytic processes must meet severe requirements. The catalytic processes in fixed bed reactors are rather complicated and usually include the chemical reactions, the processes of mass and heat transfer and reactant adsorption/desorption. As a result, a specially organised catalytic fixed bed with non-uniform properties (gradient catalysts) may appear more appropriate in some cases than the uniform one. At present, the ideas of gradient catalysts are used for creation the new type of after-burning catalysts, for microchannel reactors. In the theoretical investigation the attention is being increasingly focused on the complex approach based on the optimisation of heat and mass transfer and of the activity of the whole catalyst bed through the optimal bed packing, granule shape, distribution of the active component, heat conductivity etc., i.e. through creation of some optimal gradient medium for conducting the catalytic process. Fundamentals for optimisation of the spatial bed structure, in particular for optimisation of the active component distribution through the bed length, are developed intensively with regard to synthesis of new materials and creation of new methods for arranging reaction beds (for example, in microchannel reactors). The authors of the present book are the first who propose to use the variational approach for solving these problems, so they theoretically formulated the problem of a catalytic process optimisation by means of non-uniform spatial active sites distribution and obtained the analytic solutions for several cases

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heat transfer and analysis on heat pipe and exchanger, and thermal stress are significant issues in a design of wide range of industrial processes and devices. This book includes 17 advanced and revised contributions, and it covers mainly (1) thermodynamic effects and thermal stress, (2) heat pipe and exchanger, (3) gas flow and oxidation, and (4) heat analysis. The first section introduces spontaneous heat flow, thermodynamic effect of groundwater, stress on vertical cylindrical vessel, transient temperature fields, principles of thermoelectric conversion, and transformer performances. The second section covers thermosyphon heat pipe, shell and tube heat exchangers, heat transfer in bundles of transversely-finned tubes, fired heaters for petroleum refineries, and heat exchangers of irreversible power cycles. The third section includes gas flow over a cylinder, gas-solid flow applications, oxidation exposure, effects of buoyancy, and application of energy and thermal performance index on energy efficiency. The forth section presents integral transform and green function methods, micro capillary pumped loop, influence of polyisobutylene additions, synthesis of novel materials, and materials for electromagnetic launchers. The advanced ideas and information described here will be fruitful for the readers to find a sustainable solution in an industrialized society.

Book excerpt: The theory around the concept of finite time describes how processes of any nature can be optimized in situations when their rate is required to be non-negligible, i.e., they must come to completion in a finite time. What the theory makes explicit is "the cost of haste". Intuitively, it is quite obvious that you drive your car differently if you want to reach your destination as quickly as possible as opposed to the case when you are running out of gas. Finite-time thermodynamics quantifies such opposing requirements and may provide the optimal control to achieve the best compromise. The theory was initially developed for heat engines (steam, Otto, Stirling, a.o.) and for refrigerators, but it has by now evolved into essentially all areas of dynamic systems from the most abstract ones to the most practical ones. The present collection shows some fascinating current examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes important findings in intensive studies conducted in Japan on ammonia as an energy carrier. It illustrates an advanced solar-heat capture system and storage materials at 600°C and hydrogen production with SOECs and a new IS method through the use of heat. New industrial ammonia catalysts and a demonstration process that started running in Fukushima are also introduced. Advanced ammonia decomposition catalysts and the process that were developed for use by the hydrogen station are presented. An advanced direct ammonia fuel cell was developed and the base data are shown. The book explains that ammonia is used as a fuel for industrial applications because its burning can be controlled without emitting extra NOx in the gas turbine and the real coal co-fired power plant. These breakthroughs have made a strong impact in the world as a practical technology for CO2 reduction. Also provided here are the scientific and industrial backgrounds as well as the environmental assessment and economic evaluation for the future. This book will be helpful for all who are interested in energy technology—researchers, students, and strategy planners at companies and in the government.
