Book Synopsis Transition Economics by : Gerard Turley
Download or read book Transition Economics written by Gerard Turley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating twenty years of transition from socialism to capitalism, this book is designed to be the core textbook for undergraduate courses in transition economics and comparative economic systems. Given the passage of time, Transition Economics: Two Decades On reviews and accounts for the outcomes in the so-called transition economies and, from an academic perspective, takes the reader through developments and issues in the twenty years of transition from plan to market. Treating its subject matter thematically, the book incorporates much of the transition economics literature and evidence that have evolved over the past two decades. In particular, the authors focus on the most important aspects of economic transition, including: The initial conditions at the outset of transition Paradigms and patterns of transition The main transition policies and economic reforms The performance of transition countries and firms The lessons from transition The textbook covers a wide range of both contemporary microeconomic and macroeconomic issues, in over thirty ex-socialist European and Asian countries, including Russia and China. Transition Economics: Two Decades On is more than just a book about a particular part of the world or the transformation that was experienced at a particular time in history. The authors believe that the study of the economics of transition gives the reader an insight into theories, policies, reforms, legacies, institutions, processes and lessons that have application and relevance, beyond the specific transition from plan to market, to other parts of the world and to other times in history.
Book Synopsis The Report: Jordan 2014 by : Oxford Business Group
Download or read book The Report: Jordan 2014 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of Jordan’s key economic indicators have improved over the last year and GDP is forecast to grow by 3.5% in 2014. Jordan’s reliance on energy imports is being addressed with increased focus on domestic oil shale reserves and nuclear energy, while plans to build a pipeline through the country from Iraq will provide a stable oil supply at discounted rates. Jordan’s expanding population has put pressure on state services, particularly health, where the private sector is expected to play an increasingly prominent role. Tourism revenues rose in 2014 and, with the unveiling of a new arrivals terminal at Aqaba International Airport and plans for a national rail network, these are expected to rise further in the coming years. All in all, continued political stability, large scale transportation developments, the availability of a young, educated workforce and government efforts to reduce the fiscal deficit and the country’s reliance on energy imports should ensure Jordan maintains its strong position in the region.
Book Synopsis Privatisation in India by : T.T. Ram Mohan
Download or read book Privatisation in India written by T.T. Ram Mohan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade India has been undertaking a programme of economic reform, and at the same time the economy has been growing at a high rate. As part of the reform programme, and in line with prevailing economic thinking, India has been privatising its large, ungainly public sector. One assumption underlying this programme is the dogma that public sector enterprises are doomed to inefficiency, and that competitive market forces can be relied on to make firms more efficient once they are privatised. But is this really true? Combining rigorous data analysis with case studies to provide a balanced evaluation of the process of deregulation and privatisation within the overall context of economic reforms, the author demonstrates, remarkably, that, contrary to the prevailing view, private sector firms do not outperform public sector firms across all sectors. He also shows that revenue-raising considerations have weighed more heavily with the government than efficiency objectives. Overall, this study of the reform process in India, with its unique longstanding mix of private and public sectors, will be of great interest to all those studying reform and transition worldwide.
Book Synopsis Secondary Privatization in Transition Economies by : Iraj Hoshi
Download or read book Secondary Privatization in Transition Economies written by Iraj Hoshi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-09-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privatization was the fundamental pillar of transition from plan to market in former socialist countries. But little is known about the fate of companies that were privatized in large scale privatization schemes such as mass privatization or management-employee buyouts. This is the first original study aiming to fill this gap. It assesses wholesale privatization schemes in three leading transition countries - the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia - in terms of the evolving concentration of ownership and relations to firm performance.

Book Synopsis Market Distortions in Privatisation Processes by : Shanker A. Singham
Download or read book Market Distortions in Privatisation Processes written by Shanker A. Singham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-21 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a range of global case studies, Market Distortions in Privatisation Processes illustrates the ways in which market distortions damaged the ability of privatisation processes to yield concrete benefits to consumers. The book compares and contrasts privatisations of state-owned enterprises around the world where competition informed the regulatory design and thus liberated consumer welfare. In particular, the cases are drawn from the electricity and gas sector, the telecoms industry, and postal services – each of which has been frequently privatised in different context. For each industry, the book explores the UK and US experiences as well as looking at international cases from both developed and developing countries including, where appropriate, Japan, Colombia, Romania and Mexico. The emphasis is on analysing the impact that market distortions have had on the outcomes of those privatisations. The book also looks at how public service objectives were achieved and how they too can be designed in pro-competitive or anti-competitive ways. This book will be of significant interest to readers in international business, economics, and law.
