This book was released on 2018-04-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite a spectacular expansion of the higher education sector in Sub-Saharan Africa, the supply of tertiary education has generally failed to keep pace with demand, and the region continues to lag behind all other regions in terms of access to tertiary education. This is in part a consequence of deeply entrenched patterns of inequitable access to higher education, and the perpetuation of what researchers refer to as “elite systems.†? To date, access to tertiary education in Sub-Saharan Africa has unduly benefited students drawn from the region’s wealthiest households, and overall enrollment remains disproportionately male and metropolitan. These factors stifle the catalytic potential of higher education, corroding its potential for driving economic growth and sustaining poverty reduction. Instead, patterns of access to tertiary education have generally reinforced and reproduced social inequality, instead of eroding its pernicious social and economic effects. Sharing Higher Education’s Promise beyond the Few in Sub-Saharan Africa aims to inform an improved understanding of equity in tertiary enrollment in Sub-Saharan African countries and to examine the extent to which inequity functions as a bottleneck, inhibiting the ability of African universities to effectively drive improvements in overall quality of life and economic competitiveness. In our survey of the evidence, we also aim to identify which policies most effectively address the challenge of promoting equity of access in Sub-Saharan African tertiary education systems. To achieve these objectives, the book collects, generates, and analyzes empirical evidence on patterns of equity; examines the underlying causes of inequity; and evaluates government policies for addressing inequity.

Book Synopsis Evaluation at Work by : Bénédicte Vidaillet
Download or read book Evaluation at Work written by Bénédicte Vidaillet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-21 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation at work has attracted much criticism and its damaging effects are well known, so why does it continue to gain ground in every field? Evaluation at Work: A Psychoanalytical Critique offers an original answer to this question: evaluation spreads because we want to be evaluated. Developing a critical reflection from a psychoanalytic perspective, it argues that workers are not mere victims of evaluation systems but are complicit in them. In this fascinating volume, Bénédicte Vidaillet focuses on the aspects of our subjectivity that come into play in evaluation at work —our expectations, desires, need for recognition, our conceptions of ourselves at work, as well as our relationship with others such as colleagues, managers or clients — to explore how evaluation affects us, where it gets its evocative power, and what it stirs within us to make us want it, despite its detrimental effects in its currently practiced form. Chapters draw on real-life examples, case studies from a variety of organizations, and observations from clinical practice, to provide insight into the many mechanisms that have enabled evaluation to spread unimpeded through our subjective complicity in the process, revealing how they came to seem so innocuous. This book will be of interest to scholars studying the topic of evaluation at work from a critical perspective as well as professionals who use evaluation systems or are under the pressure of evaluation in all sectors and organizations. By exposing the psychological mechanisms that evaluation uses to appeal to us, it gives each of us the tools we need to break free of its grasp.
Book Synopsis Multipliers of Change by : Wolf, Tobias
Download or read book Multipliers of Change written by Wolf, Tobias and published by Universitätsverlag Potsdam. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Education Leadership and Management have become increasingly important throughout the years due to the complexities that have to be addressed by universities worldwide. This can be seen not only in professionalisation in fields such as faculty management or in areas of quality assurance and internationalisation, but also in the need for exchange and training in academic leadership, such as that of deans or study deans, or of university leadership in general. The Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) is addressing this need in emerging countries by building platforms of exchange and offering training courses. Not only is the programme supporting capacity building of human resources, but it is also specifically focusing on inducing change within the universities, such as introducing new instruments or tools in the area of quality assurance and internationalisation, and addressing specific challenges or setting up new structures in the form of projects in the frame of the training. The ‘National Multiplication Trainings’ Programme under DIES is further addressing the sustainability and multiplication of the DIES Programme, that is, alumni are enabled to implement capacity building in higher education leadership and management in their national context. The articles within this volume of the “Potsdamer Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung” (Potsdam Contributions to Higher Education Research) analyse and share the experiences of such training programmes held in Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Malaysia, Kenya, and Uganda. They all revolve around the best ways to address the needs and challenges in higher education leadership and management, and in building capacities in these areas.

Book excerpt: This book examines very important issues in research evaluation in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Several chapters analyse original data made available through research assessment exercises. Other chapters are the result of dedicated and independent research carried out in 2014-2015 aimed at addressing some of the debated and open issues, for example in the evaluation of books, the use of Library Catalog Analysis or Google Scholar, the definition of research quality criteria on internationalization, as well as opening the way to innovative indicators. The book is therefore a timely and important contribution to the international debate.
Book Synopsis Perspectives on Learning Assessment in the Arts in Higher Education by : Diane Leduc
Download or read book Perspectives on Learning Assessment in the Arts in Higher Education written by Diane Leduc and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on theoretical and empirical insights from art teachers in Canada and Europe, this edited volume explores the question of how learning in the arts can be effectively and fairly assessed in the context of higher education. The chapters consider a rich variety of assessment practices across music, visual and plastic arts, performing arts, design, fashion, dance and music and illustrate how knowledge, competencies, skills and progress can be viably and fairly assessed. Contextual challenges to assessment are also considered in depth, and particular attention is paid to the challenges of reconciling teaching in the arts, aimed at an intuitive transformation of the student, and assessing learning that takes on its meaning in subjectivity and sensitivity. This text will benefit researchers, academics and educators in higher education with an interest in assessment in the artistic disciplines and in the topic of creativity more broadly. Those specifically interested in educational assessment policy and the visual arts will also benefit from this book.

Book Synopsis Mergers in Higher Education by : Leon Cremonini
Download or read book Mergers in Higher Education written by Leon Cremonini and published by Studera Press. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The merger is broadly understood as a fusion of two or more units into one. The merger in higher education has received much attention by policy-makers as well as individual institutions in many countries as a means to bring higher education reforms. The merger of higher education institutions is a visible phenomenon in the recent past, but each merger provides a distinctive instance of major strategic change. Besides this, each merger also shows a distinct set of circumstances, actors, and characteristics. The aims of the mergers have been varied across the nations that include a reduction in fragmentation of institutions, economies of scale, enhanced efficiency, enhanced quality etc. Along with disapproval, a great amount of literature surrounding the benefits of the merger has emerged over the period of time. In spite of ample literature on mergers of higher education institutions, there does not appear to be a clear set of financial, efficiency or quality parameters to assess the success. The majority of the discussions have been narratives. In the available literature, the mergers have been classified based on their participants, stakeholders, nature, the strategy that drives them, their motivation, and/or the resultant degree of absorption. This book discusses the merger experiences and case study of different countries in terms of policies and practices. Each country chapter in the above context narrates that in planning the mergers, what have been the philosophical, economic, political, legal and cultural implications? How the factors such as institutional history, geographical distance, provincial tradition, state regulations, the presence of collective bargaining, and pertinent financial matters shaped the process as well as the outcome of the mergers? The idea of merger and its implementation (including process) at both government and institutional level have been discussed. The outcome assessment also forms the part of the discussion.
