Book excerpt: Face au manque de travaux sur la mémoire prospective dans la dyslexie, nous avons proposé un protocole d’évaluation informatisée de la mémoire prospective à des adolescents dyslexiques et non dyslexiques âgés de 10 à 15 ans. Le protocole était également constitué d’un questionnaire d’auto-évaluation de la mémoire prospective et d’épreuves complémentaires de mémoire de travail, mémoire épisodique et fonctions exécutives car ces fonctions interviennent dans le fonctionnement de la mémoire prospective. Les analyses statistiques ont mis en évidence des difficultés dans les tâches prospectives pour les dyslexiques. L’analyse du questionnaire montre que les oublis prospectifs relèvent plutôt de la mémoire à court terme avec un indice environnemental pour les adolescents dyslexiques. On observe également que quelques scores de mémoire prospective sont corrélés à des scores pour les épreuves complémentaires. Cette étude pourra ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives d’accompagnement du patient en orthophonie en proposant des consignes adaptées aux difficultés de mémoire prospective observées. De plus, la prise de conscience du fonctionnement de la mémoire prospective pourra permettre aux adolescents dyslexiques et leur entourage de mieux comprendre leur fonctionnement pour améliorer la vie quotidienne et augmenter leur autonomie.

La mémoire prospective, dont le fonctionnement fait intervenir ces processus, pourrait alors être altérée, suscitant des répercussions au quotidien. Une seule étude s’est intéressée à son efficience dans la dyslexie. Notre objectif est d’évaluer le fonctionnement de cette mémoire auprès de 25 adolescents dyslexiques et témoins appariés à travers un paradigme informatisé, auquel nous avons ajouté un questionnaire afin d’évaluer la plainte quotidienne. Nous avons également évalué les processus sous-tendant son fonctionnement. Les performances des adolescents dyslexiques confirment l’hypothèse d’une défaillance de la mémoire prospective. Les difficultés sont majorées chez les adolescents dyslexiques lorsque plusieurs intentions d’action sont présentes en mémoire, avec des capacités de gestion du temps affaiblies. Toutefois, les difficultés observées occasionnent peu de plainte au questionnaire. Les résultats aux épreuves complémentaires révèlent une atteinte globale de la MDT et un déficit de la mémoire épisodique rétrospective. Les difficultés exécutives sont plus nuancées. Les analyses mettent en avant l’implication de certaines de ces composantes dans la réalisation différée d’intentions d’action. Cette étude permet une compréhension plus globale des difficultés rencontrées par les patients dyslexiques nécessaire à la prise en charge et permet d’envisager une intervention sur la mémoire prospective en orthophonie.

Les résultats nous permettent de voir que la tâche de libre association pourrait être une bonne alternative ou complément à la tâche de fluence verbale. Néanmoins, les enfants dyslexiques ne se différencient pas des enfants au développement typique sur cette tâche. Les résultats sont discutés quant à notre protocole de recherche et des pistes pour de futures recherches sont proposées.

De nombreux auteurs ont mis en évidence, dans cette pathologie, un déficit de mémoire de travail affectant la modalité verbale ainsi que des ressources exécutives limitées, affectant les capacités de manipulation quel que soit le type de matériel utilisé. Un déficit de mémoire épisodique touchant à la fois la modalité verbale et visuo-spatiale a également été rapporté. L’objectif de notre étude était d’identifier les déficits mnésiques présents dans la dyslexie mixte. Pour cela, nous avons évalué les différentes composantes de mémoire de travail et la mémoire épisodique chez 19 adolescents dyslexiques mixtes et 19 sujets sains âgés de 11 à 15 ans avec une attention particulière pour le buffer épisodique, supposé faire le lien entre ces deux systèmes mnésiques. Nous nous sommes également intéressées aux répercussions des déficits mnésiques sur la lecture. Nos résultats confirment la présence, dans la dyslexie mixte, de déficits de mémoire épisodique dans les deux modalités verbale et visuo-spatiale, et de mémoire de travail, avec notamment une capacité limitée de la boucle phonologique et un dysfonctionnement de l’administrateur central. Nous avons également pu mettre en évidence l’implication du buffer épisodique dans le déficit rencontré en mémoire épisodique, mais exclusivement en modalité verbale. Par ailleurs, nos données révèlent que les sujets dyslexiques ne mobilisent que leur boucle phonologique lors des activités de lecture et de compréhension, et resteraient donc centrés sur le décodage sans pouvoir accéder à la compréhension du texte. Notre étude aura donc permis de confirmer les déficits mnésiques présents dans la dyslexie mixte et d’établir quelques liens entre l’activité de lecture et la mémoire. Elle présente, de ce fait, un intérêt direct pour la pratique clinique orthophonique et la prise en charge des patients dyslexiques.

Nous avons évalué les capacités de MT de l'ordre sériel et de l'item, les compétences phonologiques et le contrôle attentionnel chez des enfants dyslexiques et au développement typique. Une remédiation ciblant soit la MT de l'ordre sériel soit la MT de l'item a ensuite été proposée à quatre adolescents dyslexiques. Nos résultats ont montré une hétérogénéité des profils de MT dans notre groupe d'enfants dyslexiques, avec une dissociation entre les troubles de la MT de l'item et de l'ordre sériel. De plus, ces déficits de MT n'étaient pas simplement la conséquence de difficultés attentionnelles ou phonologiques des enfants dyslexiques. En revanche, nos résultats suggèrent que leurs troubles phonologiques pourraient être consécutifsà leur déficit de MT de l'item. Par ailleurs, si certaines de nos données suggèrent deseffets potentiels d'une remédiation ciblée de la MT de l'item et de l'ordre sériel, ellesmontrent également l'importance de mener d'autres études avant de pouvoir généraliser nos résultats.

We can mentally represent the visual form of objects. We can extract information from several of the senses as to the location of objects in relation to ourselves and to other objects nearby. For some of those objects we can reach out and manipulate them. We can also imagine ourselves manipulating objects in advance of doing so, or even when it would be impossible to do so physically. The problem posed to science is how these cognitive operations are accomplished, and proffered accounts lie in two essentially parallel research endeavours, working memory and imagery. Working memory is thought to pervade everyday cognition, to provide on-line processing and temporary storage, and to update, moment to moment, our representation of the current state of our environment and our interactions with that environment. There is now a strong case for the claims of working memory in the area of phonological and articulatory functions, all of which appear to contribute to everyday activities such as counting, arithmetic, vocabulary acquisition, and some aspects of reading and language comprehension. The claims for visual and spatial working memory functions are less convincing. Most notable has been the assumption that visual and spatial working memory are intimately involved in the generation, retention and manipulations of visual images. There has until recently been little hard evidence to justify that assumption, and the research on visual and spatial working memory has focused on a relatively restricted range of imagery tasks and phenomena. In a more or less independent development, the literature on visual imagery has now amassed a voluminous corpus of data and theory about a wide range of imagery phenomena. Despite this, few books on imagery refer to the concept of working memory in any detail, or specify the nature of the working memory system that might be involved in mental imagery. This essay follows a line of reconciliation and positive critiquing in exploring the possible overlap between mental imagery and working memory. Theoretical development in the book draws on data from both cognitive psychology and cognitive neuropsychology. The aim is to stimulate debate, to address directly a number of assumptions that hitherto have been implicit, and to assess the contribution of the concept of working memory to our understanding of these intriguing core aspects of human cognition.
