With this purpose, a physics-based mathematical model, MIANDRAS, has been developed for the simulation of the medium-term to long-term evolution of meandering rivers. Application to several real rivers shows that MIANDRAS can properly simulate both equilibrium river bed topography and planimetric changes. Three models of different complexity can be obtained by applying different degrees of simplification to the equations. These models, along with experimental tests and field data, constitute the tools for several analyses. At conditions of initiation of meandering, it is found that river bends can migrate upstream and downstream. This depends on meander wave length and width-to-depth ratio, irrespective of whether the parameters are in the subresonant or the superresonant range.

In this study, the RVR Meander model was used to predict the meander migration for four bridge crossings in the state of Texas, USA. The bridge crossings are SH 105 at the Brazos River, FM 787 at the Trinity River, US 90 at the Nueces River and SH 63 at the Sabine River. A widely used migration coefficient approach developed by Ikeda et al. (1981) was adopted, which relates migration rate linearly to vertically-averaged near bank excess velocity through the use of a coefficient of bank erosion. This study estimates erosion coefficient values for eroded banks from measured long term migration rates and computed near bank excess velocities. The values of erosion coefficients are calibrated using the RVR Meander model with the least prediction error. The predicted planform evolution using the model suggests that the migration coefficient approach used in the model can capture the growth of meander bends if they do not change the migration direction. In general, the model can predict migration well in lateral and downstream direction. This study also attempts to examine the extent to which erosion coefficient depends on resistance of bank material to fluvial erosion. Erosion Function Apparatus (EFA) erodibility values represent the resistance of bank material to fluvial erosion. At the upstream bends adjacent to the road crossings for which both erosion coefficients and EFA erodibility values were obtained, it was found that erodibility values follow the trend of erosion coefficients, unless significant hydraulic or geomorphic changes occurred in the watershed and in the channel due to the human activities. It opens up the possibility that erosion coefficients may be estimated directly from the bank material properties instead of using the historical maps. This suggests that for long term (several decades) meander migration riparian vegetation is not a major controlling factor. This hypothesis requires further testing with data sets from other road crossings over rivers.

Book excerpt: With the decline of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and steelhead (O. mykiss), habitat restoration actions in freshwater tributaries have been implemented to improve conditions for juveniles. Typically, physical (for example, hydrologic and engineering) based models are used to design restoration alternatives with the assumption that biological responses will be improved with changes to the physical habitat. Biological models rarely are used. Here, we describe simulations of a food web model, the Aquatic Trophic Productivity (ATP) model, to aid in the design of a restoration project in the Methow River, north-central Washington. The ATP model mechanistically links environmental conditions of the stream to the dynamics of river food webs, and can be used to simulate how alternative river restoration designs influence the potential for river reaches to sustain fish production. Four restoration design alternatives were identified that encompassed varying levels of side channel and floodplain reconnection and large wood addition. Our model simulations suggest that design alternatives focused on reconnecting side channels and the adjacent floodplain may provide the greatest increase in fish capacity. These results were robust to a range of discharge and thermal regimes that naturally occur in the Methow River. Our results suggest that biological models, such as the ATP model, can be used during the restoration planning phase to increase the effectiveness of restoration actions. Moreover, the use of multiple modeling efforts, both physical and biological, when evaluating restoration design alternatives provides a better understanding of the potential outcome of restoration actions.

Fundamentally, the lateral migration rate depends on the rate of excavation of the outer bank toe. This rate is a function of bank resistance to erosion, flow velocity, bend geometry, and sediment transport and storage. Although it is certain that all these variables play some role in determining migration rates in gravel-bed rivers, the importance of sediment storage in particular has not been thoroughly investigated. Currently employed meander migration models are driven by curvature effects on near-bank flow and account for differences in bank erodibility through use of a calibrated bank erosion coefficient. Despite increasing application of such models to sensitive management problems, it remains unclear how the coefficient varies with properties of the channel and to what extent it incorporates the effects of changes in bed-material storage on migration rate.

Many of these river projects adopt a multifunctional planning and design approach that strives to meld ecological, aesthetic, and recreational functions. However our understanding of how to accomplish multifunctionality and how the different functions work together is incomplete. Numerous ecologically justified river restoration projects may actually be driven by aesthetic and recreational preferences that are largely unexamined. At the same time river projects originally designed for aesthetics or recreation are now attempting to integrate habitat and environmental considerations to make the rivers more sustainable. Through in-depth study of a variety of constructed river landscapes - including dense historical river bend designs, artificial whitewater, and urban stream restoration this dissertation analyzes how aesthetic, ecological, and recreational functions intersect and potentially conflict. To explore how aesthetic and biophysical processes work together in riverscapes, I explored the relationship between one ideal of beauty, an s-curve illustrated by William Hogarth in the 18th century and two sets of river designs: 18th century river designs in England and late 20th century river restoration designs in North America. I used two quantifiable variables, sinuosity and symmetry, to compare the ideal curve of beauty to the designed river curves. Hogarth's s-curve and river restoration meanders had symmetrical curves. Symmetry in restoration designs represents a theoretical condition and is counter to how most natural rivers meander. A second aesthetic-ecological study examined whether 18th century English landscape design represents design with nature. By tracing the persistence of Capability Brown's river designs over the past two centuries, the results show Brown's designs required maintenance and are not self-perpetuating as expected of a design based on natural processes. To evaluate the intersection of recreation and ecological functions, I conducted a case study of three urban river projects, a historical study of artificial whitewater designs, and an observational study of summertime whitewater park use. By comparing the ecological and social impacts of three urban river projects (Cheonggyecheon in Seoul, South Korea, the South Platte Greenway in Denver, United States, and the Isar River in Munich, Germany), one emerged as moving towards multifunctional planning and design. The Isar River project was unique because the planners and designers used a dynamic guiding image, gave the river room to roam, and allowed some dynamic biophysical processes to occur. The selection of the guiding image for the Isar restoration was fortuitously a publicly valued stream reach for its aesthetics and existing recreational use. The South Platte Greenway, which contains a whitewater park, illustrates a riverscape made primarily for recreation. The history of artificial whitewater designs evolved since the 1970s to a point in 2000 when the Sydney Olympic Whitewater Course was disconnected from a stream to create a fair playing field for competitors where all of the whitewater variables could be controlled. Meanwhile, instream whitewater parks began to include habitat and fish passage considerations in the engineered wave structures. Observations of whitewater park use and surveys of park user's perceptions of the parks revealed that kayakers represent only a small fraction of park users and overall use evinced no clear relationship to streamflow but varied with air and water temperature. Summer streamflow provisions for whitewater parks potentially limits the diversity of instream users and the ecological function. While whitewater park users value clean water as the most important characteristic, all interviewed park users wanted the park to have a natural appearance, but they did not mind seeing concrete in the river. Understanding the patterns of recreation and perceptions of rivers in relation to biophysical processes such as streamflow or channel pattern is fundamental to achieving sustainability. The forms that people prefer--perhaps because they are beautiful--and a local-level understanding of recreational use need to be considered alongside the physical and ecological patterns and processes of rivers, the domain of landscape ecology and river science. Combining ground level research and perception studies with environmentally based landscape planning can create multifunctional landscapes. For previously impacted rivers in developed areas, multifunctional riverscape planning and design offers a sustainable development solution.
