Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality circles (QCs) are small volunteer groups of workers who meet weekly with a trained leader operating to a strict code of conduct. They use techniques of brainstorming, cause and effect classification, pareto analysis, and presentation to consider work-related problems and recommend solutions to management. QCs have been tried in educational institutions in North America. Two QC-related experiments in the United Kingdom have distinct differences from the pure model. Accrington and Rossendale College was suffering problems of low morale in a period of rapid change, when QCs offered an opportunity to develop participation. A research project introduced the program to staff at a series of meetings and canvassed their views. Following training of volunteers, four QCs formed among library, technician, administrative, and Business and Management Studies Department teaching staff. Problems considered included overdue library books, insurance, external appearance of the college, and storage space. An evaluation identified a particularly important benefit: the staff development opportunity for support staff. QCs proved valuable in avoiding rushed decision making. The techniques themselves were helpful in other settings. Problems were opposition from middle managers who discouraged staff attendance and opposition from lecturing staff who saw circles as one change too many. (Appendixes include 45 references and a case study of one QC's solution to a problem.) (YLB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study determined that it is feasible to conduct nationwide experimental research into the effectiveness of the most structured form of participative management--small, specially-trained work groups formed along the lines of Japanese quality control circles. The number of 'quality circles' in U.S. industry began to increase dramatically in 1980 and continues to gain wide popularity. Identification was made of over 1500 U.S. work sites with functioning quality circles. Of these, descriptive data were obtained on 713 sites, the vast majority of which were willing to participate in an evaluation of their circles effectiveness and which were past the initial 'pilot' stage of quality circles implementation--suggested criteria for inclusion in Phase II research. (A discriminant analysis determined that the characteristics of sites that were willing to participate in Phase II research did not differ substantially from those not willing to participate.) The range of sites identified is sufficiently broad to constitute a cross-section of U.S. organizations with functioning quality circles. From this pool a Phase II sample can be drawn.
Book Synopsis Quality Circles by : William L. Mohr
Download or read book Quality Circles written by William L. Mohr and published by Addison Wesley Publishing Company. This book was released on 1983 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Methods which may be used to motivate people (workers and managers) to produce and achieve higher levels of excellence and obtain job satisfaction through participation in quality circles are presented. Assessment of organization's readiness for a quality circle program, identification of objectives, techniques for problem solving, and ways to maintain momentum in quality circle building are explained in detail. Quality circles are not the total answer to an organizations problems, but they may represent a viable alternative for managing and working together to create a more effective and efficient system. The book documents the evolution of the quality circle methodology and philosophy and may be used as a handbook for people and organizations interested in quality circles. (kbc).
