Book Synopsis How Bad Are Bananas? by : Mike Berners-Lee
Download or read book How Bad Are Bananas? written by Mike Berners-Lee and published by Greystone Books. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part green-lifestyle guide, part popular science, How Bad Are Bananas? is the first book to provide the information we need to make carbon-savvy purchases and informed lifestyle choices and to build carbon considerations into our everyday thinking. The book puts our decisions into perspective with entries for the big things (the World Cup, volcanic eruptions, the Iraq war) as well as the small (email, ironing, a glass of beer). And it covers the range from birth (the carbon footprint of having a child) to death (the carbon impact of cremation). Packed full of surprises — a plastic bag has the smallest footprint of any item listed, while a block of cheese is bad news — the book continuously informs, delights, and engages the reader. Solidly researched and referenced, the easily digestible figures, statistics, charts, and graphs (including a section on the carbon footprint of various foods) will encourage discussion and help people to make up their own minds about their consumer choices.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the impact on smallholder farmers of technology options developed by Uganda's National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) to improve the productivity of the East African highland banana, a major crop in Uganda and Tanzania. The contributors survey an array of options either currently practiced or under development, including improved soil fertility management practices, conventional banana improvement, and transgenic banana cultivars. Their survey produces a number of findings with important implications for banana production: a recently developed banana hybrid adopted in Tanzania reduced the vulnerability of Tanzanian households to yield losses from pests and disease; a strong network of social ties among farmers facilitates the spread of best soil fertility management practices through farmer-to-farmer exchange; and transgenic bananas currently being developed could have pro-poor impact. Drawing on simulations of the economic benefits of these and other technology options, the contributors conclude that the current strategy endorsed by NARO, of combining conventional and transgenic approaches to mitigate the biotic pressures that cause major economic losses, is essential for sustaining banana production systems. The report serves as a valuable baseline for researchers and others interested in measuring the effectiveness of crop improvement programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a field of mature bananas, plants can be seen at all stages of vegetative growth and fruit maturity, providing a fascination for anyone who has an interest in growing crops. Banana farmers in the tropics can harvest fruit every day of the year. The absence of seasonality in production is an advantage, in that it provides a continuity of carbohydrate to meet dietary needs as well as a regular source of income, a feature that perhaps has been under-estimated by rural planners and agricultural strategists. The burgeoning interest in bananas in the last 20 years results from the belated realization that Musa is an under-exploited genus, notwithstanding the fact that one genetically narrow group, the Cavendish cultivars, supply a major export commodity second only to citrus in terms of the world fruit trade. International research interest in the diversity of fruit types has been slow to develop, presumably because bananas and plantains have hitherto been regarded as a reliable backyard source of dessert fruit or starch supplying the needs of the household, and in this situation relatively untroubled by pests, diseases or agronomic problems.

Book Synopsis Morphological, molecular and biochemical characterization of selected banana varieties in Kerala and evaluation of their anticancer activities: an overview by : Prem Jose Vazhacharickal
Download or read book Morphological, molecular and biochemical characterization of selected banana varieties in Kerala and evaluation of their anticancer activities: an overview written by Prem Jose Vazhacharickal and published by Prem Jose. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banana is one of the most important food crops all over the world. There are around 365 varieties of bananas available throughout the world. Banana is a traditional medicine for diabetes, cancer, diarrhoea and also highly nutritional food crop. In this study, commonly used varieties of banana are taken for characterization by morphology and genotype which is based on International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and RAPD analysis. Five varieties were morphologically similar in parameters such as leaf habit, pseudo stem appearance and peel color. RAPD analysis proved that these varieties of banana are closely related which coincides with the morphological characterization. Also, this study is aimed at examining the anticancer activity of Musa acuminata variety of banana which is commonly consumed in southern part of India. Anticancer examination of the sample was performed for the hexane extract using DLA and MG-63 cell lines which showed a high degree of anticancer activity which was proved by the cytotoxic effect on the tumor cell lines. Phytochemicals present in the plant concentrate provoked cell apoptosis and smoother cell expansion to quickly partitioning malignancy cell lines. Among the five varieties analysed, Musa accuminata Colla variety shows increased level of anticancer activity in both cell lines. So it is anticipated that this variety can be used as medicine orally for cancer treatment.

Book Synopsis Banana Production in Venezuela by : Barlin Orlando Olivares Campos
Download or read book Banana Production in Venezuela written by Barlin Orlando Olivares Campos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an important contribution to the knowledge of the banana soils of Venezuela. Banana, the edible fruit of Musaceae, is a staple food for more than 400 million people worldwide due to their nutritional and energy attributes. This makes Musaceae a crop of worldwide relevance, particularly in tropical regions, highlighting the impact of improved Musaceae cropping systems in the current efforts worldwide oriented towards a new agricultural revolution based on sustainable intensification. To achieve this, better practices for food production based on scientific and technical research capable to consider the complexity and variability within the agri-food sector are necessary. The research presented in this book is oriented towards providing answers to the causes of two aspects considered of high relevance for banana production, both affecting productivity and sustainability, always addressed for the Venezuelan conditions, one of the world’s largest producing countries: 1- The impact of phytosanitary risks related to Fusarium Wilt (FW) and the influence of the soil on the incidence of Banana Wilt (BW); and 2- An observed trend towards loss of productivity and decline of soil quality in some commercial farms of Aragua and Trujillo states in Venezuela. The book presents a pioneering study in the application of categorical regression (CATREG) in the characterization of banana soils and analyses soil morphological variables, such as texture, dry consistency, biological activity, reaction to HCl, and type of structure to characterize soil productivity for growing healthy bananas. It develops, for the first time in Venezuela, risk analysis and climatic suitability maps for lethal wilt disease in bananas caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) Tropical Race 4 (TR4) (syn. Fusarium odoratissimum). Innovative machine learning techniques are used to predict BW so that future crop development can be done more efficiently and sustainably.
