Book excerpt: The Air Force uses the Strength Aptitude Test (SAT) to determine whether recruits meet the fitness levels needed to perform the duties of various Air Force specialties with physical strength requirements. However, the SAT was developed in the early 1980s and has not been revalidated since then. In the interim, the duties associated with many Air Force Specialty Code classifications may have changed, and new ones have been added. These changes require a reevaluation of the SAT's utility and effectiveness for qualifying recruits into these specialties. This report evaluates the status and validity of the SAT in a series of studies and summarizes the studies RAND has completed independently and one study conducted in conjunction with HumRRO, which provided the additional data necessary to develop some courses of action for the Air Force to follow to ensure airmen can meet job-related physical requirements.

CONTENTS: Army Combat Fitness Test Training Guide Version 1.2 FIELD TESTING MANUAL Army Combat Fitness Test Version 1.4 Army Combat Fitness Test CALL NO. 18-37, September 2018 FM 7-22 ARMY PHYSICAL READINESS TRAINING, October 2012 IOC TESTING - ACFT EQUIPMENT LIST (1 X LANE REQUIREMENT) Version 1.1, 4 September 2018 ACFT Field Test Highlight Poster (Final) OVERVIEW: The Army will replace the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) with the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) as the physical fitness test of record beginning in FY21. To accomplish this, the ACFT will be implemented in three phases. Phase 1 (Initial Operating Capability – IOC) includes a limited user Field Test with approximately 60 battalion-sized units from across all components of the Army. While the ACFT is backed by thorough scientific research and has undergone several revisions, there are still details that have not been finalized. The ACFT requires a testing site with a two-mile run course and a flat field space approximately 40 x 40 meters. The field space should be grass (well maintained and cut) or artificial turf that is generally flat and free of debris. While maintaining testing standards and requirements, commanders will make adjustments for local conditions when necessary. The start and finish point for the two-mile run course must be in close proximity to the Leg Tuck station. When test events are conducted indoors, the surface must be artificial turf only. Wood and rubberized surfaces are not authorized as they impact the speed of the Sprint-Drag-Carry. When environmental conditions prohibit outdoor testing, an indoor track may be used for the 2 Mile Run. The Test OIC or NCOIC are responsible to inspect and certify the site and determine the number of testing lanes. There should not be more than 4 Soldiers per testing group for the SPT, HRP, and SDC. The OIC or NCOIC must add additional lanes or move Soldiers to a later testing session to ensure no more than 4 Soldiers per testing group. Concerns related to Soldiers, graders, or commanders will be addressed prior to test day. The number of lanes varies by number of Soldiers testing. A 16-lane ACFT site will have the following: ACFT specific test equipment requirements: 16 hexagon/trap bars (60 pounds), each with a set of locking collars. While all NSN approved hexagon bars must weigh 60 pounds, there is always a small manufacturer’s production tolerance. The approved weight tolerance for the hexagon bar is + 2 pounds (58-62 pounds). Weight tolerance for the hexagon bar and therefore the 3 Repetition Maximum Deadlift does not include the collars. On average hexagon bar collars weigh < 2.0 pounds per pair and are considered incidental to the totalweight of the MDL weight. Approximately 3,000 lbs. of bumper plates. 16 x 10 lb. medicine ball 16 x nylon sled with pull straps. 32 x 40 lb. kettle bells. Permanent or mobile pull up bars (16 x pull-up bars at approximately 7.5 feet off the ground with,step-ups for shorter Soldiers). Common unit equipment for set-up and grading: 16 stop watches. 8 x 25m tape measures. 8 x wooden or PVC marking sticks for the SPT. One stick for every two lanes. 70 x 18” traffic cones. 50 field / dome cones. A soft, flat, dry test area approximately 40m x 40m on grass or artificial turf (half of a soccer or football field). A site that is free of any significant hazards. A preparation area (can be same as briefing area) to conduct Preparation Drill. A generally flat, measured running course with a solid, improved surface that is not more than 3 percent uphill grade and has no overall decline (start and finish must be at the same altitude).

Book excerpt: Military readiness requires service members to be mentally and physically fit to perform duties in various environments. To determine whether service members have the requisite physical fitness to serve, the U.S. Air Force (AF) and its sister services have established various medical and physical standards. These standards are first applied as part of an initial screening for military entrance. After joining, service members must continue to maintain fitness in accordance with their respective service policies. This report presents an overview of research relevant to fitness assessment (FA) components to ensure airmen readiness, support the National Defense Strategy, and promote a culture of health and well-being across the AF. The authors conducted an evaluation of the AF-FA using scientific evidence drawn from published literature on relevant FA components, with an emphasis on the potential for current assessments to meet overall health and deployment requirements. Evidence from the literature was augmented with workshops and discussions with a variety of subject-matter experts, including those familiar with deployment readiness training. The authors also identify potential gaps and offer recommendations for improvement. The work in this report should be of interest to military policymakers and researchers involved in setting and evaluating military physical fitness standards.

Book excerpt: Preparing for the Army Combat Fitness Test is the ideal resource to help you assess your readiness and train for the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). Because soldiers operate on a three-dimensional battlefield where physical demands are often variable and unpredictable, the Army’s revised physical test provides a more diverse measurement of a soldier's physical abilities than its predecessor. But if you are one of the 200,000 annual recruits or the 1.2 million active duty soldiers who must pass these new protocols, this diverse test may bring anxiety and uneasiness. That is where this essential guide can help. Backed by the expertise of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Preparing for the Army Combat Fitness Test is the first book on the market to address the requirements of the ACFT and provide you with the tools you need to be prepared for testing day. Consisting of six events—the 3 Repetition Maximum Deadlift, Standing Power Throw, Hand Release Push-Up–Arm Extension, Sprint-Drag-Carry, Leg Tuck, and Two-Mile Run—the ACFT will test physical characteristics that you can develop and cultivate with the training guidelines in this book. For each testing event, you’ll find a description of the test, instructions on performing the test safely and effectively, and scoring standards so you know the minimum performance requirements to pass and avoid being disqualified on testing day. To begin, you will be guided through a self-assessment that will allow you to determine your current readiness and select a training program to maximize your performance outcomes. A variety of sample training plans are provided so you can select a plan based on how much time you have to prepare for the ACFT and the amount of time you have available to train. Choose from 24-, 12-, 8-, or 4-week plans that contain workouts for two, three, four, or five days a week. Setup and execution guidelines are provided for over 100 exercises, so you can safely and effectively execute the exercises assigned within your training program. Accompanying photos visually demonstrate how to perform the exercises. If you don’t have access to the necessary equipment for the primary exercises, suggestions are offered for replacement exercises that are similar in movement and training outcome. Completing this comprehensive training resource is valuable supplemental information about nutrition, hydration, physical and mental recovery, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The ACFT does not have to feel overwhelming. With a good preparation plan and commitment to training, you can show up on test day with confidence. Preparing for the Army Combat Fitness Test will give you the edge you need to excel and achieve your best on the Army Combat Fitness Test. Get more help from the app! Looking for additional resources to make sure you are in peak condition for the test? Book excerpt: If you have never failed your PT Test, then this little book is not for you. Sorry, save your money and go buy a Monster instead. If have recently failed, concerned about an upcoming assessment, want to get leadership off your back, tired of bad advice that doesn't work from people who have never failed, never want your PT Test to interfere with your career ever again, just plain frustrated, or have troops that have failed, keep reading!I have gone from failing and being in "the program" to ending my career with a 97.5. My goal is to produce the same results for all the Airmen out there, who are struggling with the PT Test, themselves. This is not going to turn you into a machine overnight. This not my version of P90X. This is not Weight Watchers. I am not going to sell you a magic drink powder. I am not going to ask you to join a network marketing or multi level marketing scheme. What I am going to give you is information and guidance. The Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment is broken down to three parts. Strength, Aerobic Endurance, and Waist Measurement. In this book I will give you unconventional methods to address each of these.I will help you Pass Your PT Test by covering the following:*Strength (push-ups and sit-ups)- I can teach you how to improve these numbers drastically in 30 days by teaching you how to "grease the groove."*Aerobic Endurance (1.5 mile run)- This one isn't so easy. We will address ankle and foot mobility, running efficiency and training to specifically target you heart and lungs.*Body Composition (waist measurement)- This can be easy but in most cases we really need to spend some time on this. We will cover food addiction, inflammatory foods and stress management.Although I am retired, I still want to serve. The best way I see that's possible is to apply my years of research and experience to helping Airman never let the PT Test get in the way of a 5 EPR, promotion, or assignment ever again.

Book excerpt: In January 2013, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of Defense rescinded the 1994 Direct Ground Combat Definition and Assignment Rule and mandated that "[v]alidated gender-neutral occupational standards will be used to assess and assign Service members not later than September 2015." In support of this mandate, the U.S. Air Force asked RAND to assist its development and validation of gender-neutral tests and standards for six battlefield airmen (BA) specialties, which were the only occupational specialties that remained closed to women in the Air Force at the time of the study (now open to women). This report describes RAND's assistance to the Air Force on two fronts: (1) designing physical task simulations (PTSs) to measure the occupationally relevant physical requirements for BA specialties and (2) setting standards for BA physical performance on the PTSs. This research will provide the foundation for Air Force performance measures and tests that meet scientific, technical, and best practice standards.

Book excerpt: This United States Army manual, Army Techniques Publication ATP 7-22.01 Holistic Health and Fitness Testing October 2020, comprises the Army's physical testing doctrine and is a companion to the physical readiness domain described in FM 7-22, Holistic Health and Fitness, and ATP 7-22.02, Holistic Health and Fitness Drills and Exercises. This publication establishes physical fitness test administration and evaluation procedures for the Occupational Physical Assessment Test (OPAT), Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), and Combat Water Survival Test (CWST). The OPAT certifies that Army recruits are physically ready to begin initial entry training. The ACFT measures a Soldier's physical ability to execute combat-related tasks. The ACFT validates the Soldier's and unit's physical readiness training; it demonstrates how effectively that training prepares Soldiers for the physical tasks that every Soldier has to be ready to perform. The CWST certifies that Soldiers have the ability to operate in and around water and maritime environments. The principal audience for this doctrine is leaders at all organizational levels. All leaders are trainers. Leaders include officers, warrant officers, noncommissioned officers, and those Department of the Army (DA) Civilians in leadership positions. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication. Commanders, staffs, and subordinates at all levels ensure that holistic health and fitness (H2F) testing is properly administered in accordance with requirements outlined in this publication. This publication prescribes DA Form 705 (Army Combat Fitness Test Scorecard) and DA Form 7888 (Occupational Physical Assessment Test Scorecard). This doctrine and the regulations that support it apply to the Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and the United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical fitness is a measure of an individual's ability to perform physical tasks and has a significant influence on health. Thus, improving a person's fitness level has become a vital issue in preventive medicine in many developed countries today. However, a considerable amount of research employs secondary data or random samples for the assessment of physical fitness performance. Thus, the means of efficiently and objectively evaluating physical fitness performance has become a topic of concern. Thus, this study employed the physical fitness index (PFI) established by Lin, Chang, and Chen [1] as an evaluation tool and used it as a naive estimator to estimate specific domains of fitness. Because of the uncertainty in performance assessments associated with sampling error, we derived the 100(1-a)% confidence interval of the PFI by statistical inference to serve as the assessment criteria. Furthermore, to effectively increase management efficiency, we further integrated the confidence interval into a radar chart with a pentagon shape to evaluate the performance of each fitness component simultaneously. Finally, we present an illustrative example demonstrating the applicability of the proposed assessment approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Thigpen's study on the history of the Combat Talon is the first effort to tell the story of this wonderfully capable machine. This weapons system has performed virtually every imaginable tactical event in the spectrum of conflict and by any measure is the most versatile C-130 derivative ever produced. First modified and sent to Southeast Asia (SEA) in 1966 to replace theater unconventional warfare (UW) assets that were limited in both lift capability and speed the Talon I quickly adapted to theater UW tasking including infiltration and resupply and psychological warfare operations into North Vietnam. After spending four years in SEA and maturing into a highly respected UW weapons system the Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) chose the Combat Talon to lead the night low-level raid on the North Vietnamese prison camp at Son Tay. Despite the outcome of the operation the Talon I cemented its reputation as the weapons system of choice for long-range clandestine operations. In the period following the Vietnam War United States Air Force (USAF) special operations gradually lost its political and financial support which was graphically demonstrated in the failed Desert One mission into Iran. Thanks to congressional supporters like Earl Hutto of Florida and Dan Daniel of Virginia funds for aircraft upgrades and military construction projects materialized to meet the ever-increasing threat to our nation. Under the leadership of such committed hard-driven officers as Brenci Uttaro Ferkes Meller and Thigpen the crew force became the most disciplined in our Air Force. It was capable of penetrating hostile airspace at night in a low-level mountainous environment covertly to execute any number of unconventional warfare missions.
