El objetivo fundamental fue evaluar de manera integral el proceso de formacion de los auxiliares de enfermeria, sobre todo en una coyuntura en que se planteaba la desconcentracion del desarrollo del mismo. Desde el punto de vista metodologico, el documento recoge las opiniones tanto de los docentes como de los estudiantes y las autoridades institucionales vinculadas con el tema. En la parte introductoria el documento presenta informacion historica acerca del programa de formcion de auxiliares de enfermeria en Costa Rica. En la segunda parte el analisis curricular que se desarrolla se hace desde una perspectiva muy amplia que toma en cuenta aspectos tales como: programacion y evaluacion del curso, la situacion del personal docente, el perfil de los estudiantes, las relaciones entre docentes y estudiantes, problemas individuales y grupales relacionados con el desempeno, coherencia entre la formacion y el desempeno, opiniones acerca de la desconcentracion del programa y la evaluacion del curso. En la tercera parte se analizan los aspectos financieros relacionados con el costo per capita y el sistemas de ayudas y obligaciones economicas contraidas por los estudiantes durante el proceso de formacion. En la cuarta y ultima parte se presenta la discusion general de los hallazgos y se realizan algunas recomendaciones.

The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) provides a single, rapid assessment of nutritional status in the elderly of different degrees of independence, allowing the prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition to be determined and to evaluate the efficacy of nutritional intervention and strategies. Easy, quick and economical to perform, it enables staff to check the nutritional status of elderly people when they enter hospitals or institutions and to monitor changes occurring during their stay. Moreover, the MNA is predictive of the cost of care and length of stay in hospital. This publication will be of immense assistance to heads of geriatric teaching units, teachers in nutrition, clinicians general practitioners and dieticians, enabling them to better detect, recognise and start treatment of malnutrition in the elderly.

Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care.
