Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce's Finnegans Wake has repeatedly been declared to be entirely untranslatable. Nonetheless, it has been translated, transposed, or transcreated into a surprising variety of languages – including complete renditions in French, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, and Korean, and partial renditions in Italian, Spanish, and a variety of other languages. Impossible Joyce explores the fascinating range of different approaches adopted by translators in coming to grips with Joyce's astonishing literary text. In this study, Patrick O'Neill builds on an approach first developed in his book Polyglot Joyce, but deepens his focus by considering Finnegans Wake exclusively. Venturing from Umberto Eco's assertion that the novel is a machine designed to generate as many meanings as possible for readers, he provides a sustained examination of the textual effects generated by comparative readings of translated excerpts. In doing so, O'Neill makes manifest the ways in which attempts to translate this extraordinary text have resulted in a cumulative extension of Finnegans Wake into an even more extraordinary macrotext encompassing and subsuming its collective renderings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the first comprehensive book on Liliana Cavani, Gaetana Marrone redraws the map of postwar Italian cinema to make room for this extraordinary filmmaker, whose representations of transgressive eroticism, spiritual questing, and psychological extremes test the limits of the medium, pushing it into uncharted areas of discovery. Cavani's film The Night Porter (1974) created a sensation in the United States and Europe. But in many ways her critically renowned endeavors--which also include Francesco di Assisi, Galileo, I cannibali, Beyond Good and Evil, The Berlin Affair, and several operas and documentaries--remain enigmatic to audiences. Here Marrone presents Cavani's work as a cinema of ideas, showing how it takes pleasure in the telling of a story and ultimately revolts against all binding ideological and commercial codes. The author explores the rich visual language in which Cavani expresses thought, and the cultural icons that constitute her style and images. This approach affords powerful insights into the intricate interlacing of narrated events. We also come to understand the importance assigned to the gaze in the genesis of desire and the acquisition of knowledge. The films come to life in this book as the classical tragedies Cavani intended, where rebels and madmen experience conflict between historical and spiritual reality, the present and the past. Offering intertextual analyses within such fields as psychology, history, and cultural studies, along with production information gleaned from Cavani's personal archives, Marrone boldly advances our understanding of an intriguing, important body of cinematic work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the first books in child second language acquisition (SLA), this book focuses on the core area of tense-aspect morphology, reporting on three L1-Italian children learning L2 English vs. three L1-English children learning L2 Italian. An innovative longitudinal/bidirectional research design, where two languages represent both source and target, show effects of language transfer in learners that, because of their age, still have potential to become native-speakers of the target. An unusual feature of this book is that relevant studies of acquisition of L2 Italian, some heretofore only in Italian, are reviewed, incorporated into the study and made available to a more general audience. Though the main focus is on child SLA, crucial comparisons to both first language acquisition vs. adult SLA are presented. This approach will thus be of interest more generally to readers in first and second language acquisition and child development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Italian werewolf. A dancing devil. And a storyteller who chronicles it all. Italy has enchanted travelers for hundreds of years. Now, those who crave a deeper understanding of Europe’s favorite boot can find it through storytelling. Angelo Mazzoli, beloved teacher and ambassador of culture, recounts the stories he heard at the knee of his aunt Faustina—a communist, feminist seamstress who made everything from wedding gowns to bathing costumes for the residents of her Umbrian hill-town. The author shares sixteen of Zia Faustina’s stories, and thus opens the door to the folklore that dwells within the hearts of all Umbrians. Reading about Orlando’s massacre of female hearts in Spello reveals the spectacle of love passed from generation to generation in Italy. A story about a woman living alone in the mountain above Spello illustrates the vulnerability and strength that endure despite all obstacles. A bandit living in Saint Francis’s Assisi teaches us about Umbrian notions of good and evil. Beyond folklore, the author remembers the post-war years in Italy, when a nation struggled to find a direction and an identity. Anecdotes of a thriving main street—including the author’s father’s woodworking shop, his grandfather’s cobbler shop, and his aunt’s seamstress shop—create a vivid tapestry of the joy and community once easily found outside one’s front door. Adapted for English-speakers by Michelle Damiani (who authored the bestselling Il Bel Centro: A Year in the Beautiful Center, a memoir of her year in Spello), Tales from My Zia Faustina will capture hearts and imaginations. Lovers of Italy, especially those readying to embark on a trip to Umbria, will get more out of their travels by understanding the place names, customs, superstitions, and history of Umbria. Language students will take particular delight in translating for themselves the original Italian, as every one of Angelo Mazzoli's words is included in the second half of the book, or at the very least, hearing the Italian lilt in the English translation. If you’re ready to discover new layers of Italy, it’s time to listen to Zia Faustina. Scroll up and click BUY NOW to discover the secrets of unlocking Umbria today! These stories are fabulous, vivid, vibrant, and lyrical. MIchelle Damiani captures the beauty of Angelo’s story telling. Love it! This book is coming out at an ideal time when the world is so transient with little regard for the importance of having roots and a sense of belonging. I love how Angelo celebrates women through his stories! Faustina was certainly a woman ahead of the times with a fierce and fearless spirit...and a big heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel, systematic theory of adjunct control, explaining how and why adjuncts shift between obligatory and nonobligatory control. Control in adjuncts involves a complex interaction of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, which so far has resisted systematic analysis. In this book, Idan Landau offers the first comprehensive account of adjunct control. Extending the framework developed in his earlier book, A Two-Tiered Theory of Control, Landau analyzes ten different types of adjuncts and shows that they fall into two categories: those displaying strict obligatory control (OC) and those alternating between OC and nonobligatory control (NOC). He explains how and why adjuncts shift between OC and NOC, unifying their syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties. Landau shows that the split between the two types of adjuncts reflects a fundamental distinction in the semantic type of the adjunct: property (OC) or proposition (NOC), a distinction independently detectable by the adjunct's tolerance to a lexical subject. After presenting a fully compositional account of controlled adjuncts, Landau tests and confirms the specific configurational predictions for each type of adjunct. He describes the interplay between OC and NOC in terms of general principles of competition--both within the grammar and outside of it, in the pragmatics and in the processing module--shedding new light on classical puzzles in the acquisition of adjunct control by children. Along the way, he addresses a range of empirical phenomena, including implicit arguments, event control, logophoricity, and topicality.

Book excerpt: Italian Modernism was written in response to the need for an historiographic and theoretical reconsideration of the concepts of Decadentismo and the avant-garde within the Italian critical tradition. Focussing on the confrontation between these concepts and the broader notion of international modernism, the essays in this important collection seek to understand this complex phase of literary and artistic practices as a response to the epistemes of philosophical and scientific modernity at the end of the nineteenth century and in the first three decades of the twentieth. Intellectually provocative, this collection is the first attempt in the field of Italian Studies at a comprehensive account of Italian literary modernism. Each contributor documents how previous critical categories, employed to account for the literary, artistic, and cultural experiences of the period, have provided only partial and inadequate descriptions, preventing a fuller understanding of the complexities and the interrelations among the cultural phenomena of the time.
