This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: scholarly journal European Polygraph, which henceforth will be published quarterly. The original version of the journal is the paper edition. The home of the polygraph is the United States; it was there that the first polygraph was built and first used in practice. A substantial portion of the scientific studies fundamental to polygraph research was also conducted in the United States and the results have been published in American scientific and specialist journals. Finally, the United States host the largest organisation in the world for persons involved in various aspects of polygraph examinations – the American Polygraph Association. Asia is without a doubt the second continent – after America – in which the polygraph has entered into permanent practise and is the subject of scientific research. Scientific and experimental research on the polygraph, analysis of its practical applications, and the widespread use of polygraph examinations in Israel and Japan are well-known. The polygraph is popular in many other Asian countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan. The use of polygraph examinations in Latin America is also known. In Europe, the polygraph has been used relatively the least, or at any rate information on it has been the least well-known. Further, European scientific work on polygraph examinations seems disproportionately meagre compared to European scientific potential. Traditionally, Western Europe has not been favourably disposed in general toward polygraph examinations. Further, the work on polygraph examinations conducted in Central and Eastern Europe – apart perhaps from Poland and the former Yugoslavia – was also not widely known around the world. After the unification of Europe – made possible with the fall of communism and the end of Soviet domination in the region that took place several years ago – it is possible to speak once again about a single European science. As it turns out, many Central and Eastern European countries have their own – though not widely known – body of scientific work and practical experience with polygraph examinations. The attitude toward polygraph examinations is changing in Western countries as well, as evidenced by the increasingly wider use of the polygraph by the Belgian police or the change in attitudes toward the polygraph noted in Germany. Our journal was conceived as an international forum upon which to present the achievements and scientific research in polygraph examinations. The forum will also serve as a means by which to exchange practical experience from many countries and publish book reviews of works devoted to the subject. The issue of polygraph examinations includes basic research in myriad fields such as psychology, psychiatry, psychophysiology, criminology, forensic sciences – and in the near future – certainly also neurophysiology and others. The journal will also deal with approaches and research conducted as part of criminal justice, jurisprudence (criminal procedure), human rights, labour law, and others. It will also contain philosophical and strictly ethical reflections on polygraph examinations. Our objective is to publish works on polygraph examinations from this broad spectrum of sciences. We will publish both the results of experimental research, as well as analyses of practises, case studies, works on the history of polygraph examinations, legal considerations on polygraph examinations and their admissibility in investigations and court cases, as well as pre-employment and control examinations such as those used in the civil service and in business. We will also publish training materials based on practical experience, book reviews of works on polygraph examinations, and proceedings from conferences and seminars devoted to the subject. We invite all of you to co-operate in this endeavour. Prof. Jan Widacki LL.D. Editor-in-Chief
Download or read book Lies written by Rachelle M. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia examines the phenomenon of deception from a variety of perspectives and in a multitude of contexts. It offers readers an accessibly written and engaging resource that sheds light on when, why, and how we lie. Ironically, it seems to be a universal truth that everyone lies. From innocent "white lies" to elaborate deceptions, humans appear to be hard-wired for dishonesty. But what psychological or evolutionary purpose does lying serve? What motivates us to lie, and what effects do such lies have on those around us and on our own physiology and mental health? What are the differences between types of lies, and how do various forms of dishonesty manifest themselves in such areas as politics, advertising, and social media? And, perhaps most importantly, how can we spot liars in our everyday lives and encourage those around us—and even ourselves—to be more honest? Lies: The Science behind Deception provides a broad and multifaceted introduction to this fascinating topic. More than 175 entries address the many forms of lying, the purpose and development of such behaviors, and their consequences. It also includes practical sidebars that help readers to deal with lying and liars in their own lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, there has been an intrinsic need for humans to detect deception in other humans. Developed in 1923, the polygraph machine was a tool designed to do just this. To date, there have been many improvements made to the basic polygraph instrument. This book outlines the instrumentation as well as the latest in questioning techniques and methods available to the professional interviewer to determine truth from deception. The book covers psychology and physiology, a history of polygraph with the advances of leading figures, question formulation, data analysis, legal implications and legal cases, and the author’s developed technique Integrated Zone Comparison Technique (IZCT).
Book Synopsis Comparing Police Corruption by : Leslie Holmes
Download or read book Comparing Police Corruption written by Leslie Holmes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses police corruption across four country case studies, exploring how the problem manifests in each country and how it can be reduced. The problem of police corruption ranges from having to pay a bribe to a traffic cop to avoid a speeding fine, right up to more serious forms, such as collusion with organised crime groups and terrorists. The issue therefore constitutes a significant security threat and a human rights issue, but it is often difficult to understand the extent of the problem, and how it varies across contexts. This book analyses the corruption situation in Bulgaria, Germany, Russia and Singapore, identifies similarities and differences across them, and analyses the various means of addressing the problem: punitive, incentivising, technological, administrative and imaging, and the role of civil society. Drawing on existing literature and research, the book also makes extensive use of local sources and original survey data across the four countries. As comparative literature on police corruption remains rare, this book’s survey of the situation in two developed states and two post-communist transition states will be of considerable interest to students and researchers across corruption studies, criminology, police studies and security studies, as well as practitioners working in anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies.
Book Synopsis Coercive Brain-Reading in Criminal Justice by : Sjors Ligthart
Download or read book Coercive Brain-Reading in Criminal Justice written by Sjors Ligthart and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging neurotechnology offers increasingly individualised brain information, enabling researchers to identify mental states and content. When accurate and valid, these brain-reading technologies also provide data that could be useful in criminal legal procedures, such as memory detection with EEG and the prediction of recidivism with fMRI. Yet, unlike in medicine, individuals involved in criminal cases will often be reluctant to undergo brain-reading procedures. This raises the question of whether coercive brain-reading could be permissible in criminal law. Coercive Brain-Reading in Criminal Justice examines this question in view of European human rights: the prohibition of ill-treatment, the right to privacy, freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and the privilege against self-incrimination. The book argues that, at present, the established framework of human rights does not exclude coercive brain-reading. It does, however, delimit the permissible use of forensic brain-reading without valid consent. This cautionary, cutting-edge book lays a crucial foundation for understanding the future of criminal legal proceedings in a world of ever-advancing neurotechnology.

Book Synopsis Preventing Sexual Harm by : Stephanie Kewley
Download or read book Preventing Sexual Harm written by Stephanie Kewley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preventing Sexual Harm provides an overview of current criminal justice strategies for tackling sexual violence, and highlights existing positive criminological approaches that could help prevent sexual abuse and harm. Sexual violence is a complex, multi-faceted crime. Its causes and consequences are both multiple and enduring and our understanding of sexual violence is embedded within our social, cultural, and political constructs. As such, a response to sexual violence ought to be equally complex and multi-faceted. Alternative approaches might therefore be needed, such as positive criminology. This book explores positive criminology as a mechanism to reduce the risk of recidivism, eradicate harm, prevent reoffending as well as to help reintegrate those with histories of sexual abuse back into the community. In light of recent historic cases of sexual abuse and poor institutional response to these allegations, it opens with an overview of the current landscape of sexual offending. The book then reviews the current positive criminological approaches already in existence in the effort to prevent sexual abuse by outlining the approach of positive criminology and by demonstrating the many gaps in practice that might benefit from this new way of working to prevent sexual abuse. By highlighting that an alternative response to sexual violence is needed, and by presenting the idea that a positive criminological paradigm is worthy of further examination, this book will be of great interest to scholars of criminology, criminal justice, and forensic psychology.
