Book Synopsis Offshore Technology in Civil Engineering, Volume Five by : J. S. Templeton, III
Download or read book Offshore Technology in Civil Engineering, Volume Five written by J. S. Templeton, III and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth volume in a series of publications containing classic papers from the early years of the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), the world s leading event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of exploration, drilling, production, and environmental protection. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), through its participation in and support of the OTC, plays a major role in the innovation and evolution of the technologies needed to overcome the challenges facing development of resources in the offshore environment. The years since the first OTC Conference in 1969 have seen the presentation of over 10,000 papers in the various technical disciplines central to offshore development. A few of the civil engineering papers, presented throughout OTC s history, provided innovation in, vision for and lasting impact on the design, construction, or installation of offshore infrastructure. Many have been adopted by design standards worldwide or became an integral part of design software. Some have had influence far beyond the offshore industry, and some have become integral to the design process of onshore structures such as buildings and bridges. Offshore Technology in Civil Engineering: Hall of Fame Papers from the Early Years; Volume Five is a collection of the eight winning papers inducted in 2010 at an award ceremony during OTC in May of 2010. The engineering methods published in these papers have proven their value through widespread use, permeating codes, standards, guidelines, and engineering software.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals and Applications of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (SCO2) Based Power Cycles by : Klaus Brun
Download or read book Fundamentals and Applications of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (SCO2) Based Power Cycles written by Klaus Brun and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals and Applications of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (SCO2) Based Power Cycles aims to provide engineers and researchers with an authoritative overview of research and technology in this area. Part One introduces the technology and reviews the properties of SCO2 relevant to power cycles. Other sections of the book address components for SCO2 power cycles, such as turbomachinery expanders, compressors, recuperators, and design challenges, such as the need for high-temperature materials. Chapters on key applications, including waste heat, nuclear power, fossil energy, geothermal and concentrated solar power are also included. The final section addresses major international research programs. Readers will learn about the attractive features of SC02 power cycles, which include a lower capital cost potential than the traditional cycle, and the compounding performance benefits from a more efficient thermodynamic cycle on balance of plant requirements, fuel use, and emissions. - Represents the first book to focus exclusively on SC02 power cycles - Contains detailed coverage of cycle fundamentals, key components, and design challenges - Addresses the wide range of applications of SC02 power cycles, from more efficient electricity generation, to ship propulsion
Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Lubricated Transport of Viscous Materials by : Harold Ramkissoon
Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Lubricated Transport of Viscous Materials written by Harold Ramkissoon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the First International Symposium on Lubricated Transport of Viscous Materials was to bring together scientists and engineers from academia and industryto discuss current research work and exchange ideas in this newly emerging field. It is an area offluid dynamics devoted to laying bare the principlesofthe lubricated transport of viscous materials such as crude oil, concentrated oil/water emulsion, slurries and capsules. It encompasses several types of problem. Studies of migration of particulates away from walls, Segre-Silverberg effects, lubrication versus lift and shear-induced migration belong to one category. Some of the technological problems are the fluid dynamics ofcore flows emphasizing studies ofstability, problems of start-up, lift-off and eccentric flow where gravity causes the core flow to stratify. Another category of problems deals with the fouling of pipe walls with oil, with undesirable increases in pressure gradients and even blocking. This study involves subjects like adhesion and dynamic contact angles. The topics ofshear-induced diffusion ofsmall particles and wall slip in slow flow are other appropriate subjects. Computer intensive studiesofflow-induced microstructures and moving interface problems are yet additional research directions. The general consensus was that the Symposium was a tremendous success, although the number of presentations fell below expectations. Scientists from the petroleum industry, and this includes INTEVEP (Venezuela), Schlumberger and Syncrude Canada Ltd. , and consultants to oil companies actively participated in the Symposium. The meeting produced new insights which should lead to further interesting research work and established contacts for possiblejoint investigations.
Book Synopsis Petroleum Related Rock Mechanics by : E. Fjær
Download or read book Petroleum Related Rock Mechanics written by E. Fjær and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-01-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-awaited volume, written specifically for petroleum workers, explores the fundamental concepts of rock mechanics along with various petroleum-related applications. Emphasis is placed on the weak sedimentary rocks which normally fall between traditional rock mechanics and soil mechanics. Elasticity, failure mechanics, acoustic wave propagation, and geological aspects of rock materials are all detailed. Application areas discussed include: stability during drilling, sand production, fracturing and reservoir compaction. Methods for acquisition of data from field and laboratory analyses are also described.Engineers and geologists in the petroleum industry will find this book a powerful resource in providing a basis of rock mechanical knowledge - a knowledge which can greatly assist in the understanding of field behaviour, design of test programmes and the design of field operations.

Book Synopsis Surfactants in Solution by : K.L. Mittal
Download or read book Surfactants in Solution written by K.L. Mittal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This and its companion Volumes 4 and 5 document the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution held in Bordeaux, France, July 9-13, 1984. This symposium was the continuation of the series of symposia initiated in 1976 in Albany, New Vork under the title ""icellization, Solubilization and "icroemulsions". The next two symposia were labelled "Solution Chemistry of Surfactants" and "Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects" held in Knoxville, TN in 1978 and Potsdam, N. V. in 1980, respectively. In 19B2 at the time of the 4th Symposium in this series, it became amply evident that there was a definite need to have more a generic title to describe these biennial events, and after much deliberation it was decided that an appropriate title would be "Surfactants in Solution" as both the aggregation and adsorption aspects of surfactants were addressed. So the 4th Symposium was held in 1982 in Lund, Sweden, under this new rubric, and it was decided to continue these symposia in the future under this appellation. Naturally, the Bordeaux Symposium was dubbed as the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution, and our logo became SIS which is very apropos and appealing. It was in Bordeaux that the decision was made to hold the 6th SIS Symposium in New Delhi and it is scheduled for August 18-22, 1986 in the capital of India.
