Book excerpt: GATEWAYS TO DEMOCRACY continues with its framework of "gateways" to help readers conceptualize participation and civic engagement--even democracy itself--with reference to how individuals access the political system. This approach helps readers better see the relevance of government in their lives. GATEWAYS uniquely incorporates policy into a section at the end of each chapter, helping readers better understand the connection between public opinion, policy-making and how public policy applies to their lives. The second edition, complete with 2012 election updates, emphasizes critical thinking by clearly outlining learning outcomes and enhancing learning with self-assessment "Checkpoints" and a clear chapter study plan. Chapters in this ESSENTIALS version are condensed to accommodate a shorter format but preserve the integrity of the text's hallmarks.
Download or read book Lead Markets written by Marian Beise and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. 1 Summary This thesis intends to answer three questions: First, what is a lead market; second, what constitutes a lead market, and third, how companies can harness lead markets to generate global innovations. Considering the international, cross-border diffu sion of innovations one can observe that a particular technological design such as the facsimile machine, the personal computer or the mobile cellular telephone is often adopted by one country or region much earlier than by other countries which subsequently follow this country, which I will call the lead market. A lead market is defined as a country that adopts an innovation that is subsequently adopted worldwide. When different designs of an innovation compete internationally, the design preferred in the lead market becomes the global dominant design. The study suggests a theoretical explanation for the phenomena of lead markets and collects empirical evidence from a detailed case study of the cellular mobile tele of an innovation design adopted first phone industry. The international diffusion by the lead market, i. e. subsequent adoption of an innovation design preferred in the lead market by other countries, can be put down to the special market context in the lead market. The market context includes demand preferences, the environ mental condition and the degree of competition. Multinational firms are often confronted not only with varying market acceptance of new products and processes from country to country, but with national prefer ences for particular specifications of an innovation, i. e.

Download or read book Cyberimperialism? written by Bosah Ebo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses whether all nations will actively participate in building the information superhighway or whether the Internet will reflect global technological inequalities. The writings are grouped in four major sections, which examine theoretical issues on cyberglobalization, politics in the electronic global village, global economic issues in cyberspace, and national identities and grassroots movements in cyberspace. Contributing scholars represent a wide spectrum of disciplines from political science, economics, and communications to sociology, anthropology, and philosophy. A number of methodological and theoretical perspectives direct the writings. Collectively, the essays point toward an emerging technology that exhibits innate qualities characteristic of the classic notion of cultural imperialism. This edited collection, with its timely approach to the implications of the Internet for global relations, will appeal to communication, sociology, and political science scholars. The interdisciplinary approach will also attract students and educators from such fields as anthropology, philosophy and economics. To aid in further research, select bibliographies follow each essay.

Download or read book The Human Society and the Internet: Internet Related Socio-Economic Issues written by Won Kim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past several years, the world has entered the first phase of the Internet Revolution. Investors showed confidence and faith in the prospects of the Internet driven economy. In the US alone, some 30,000 dot com companies have sprung up to support electronic commerce with a wide variety of business models, technologies, and/or items or services to sell or even give away. Traditional businesses, so called brick and mortar, or offline, businesses, have started to respond to challenges by Internet based new competitors by augmenting their own businesses with Internet based, or online, businesses and/or filing lawsuits against them. The initial business to consumer orientation of electronic commerce is giving way to business to business commerce, with large corporations forming electronic exchanges or consortia to conduct commerce among members. Government, industry, and civic groups have started addressing social issues related to the Internet, such as taxation on electronic commerce, privacy, intellectual property rights, security, hacking, cyber crimes, digital divide, etc. Governments have started legitimizing electronic signatures and stepping up efforts to track down perpetrators of cyber crimes. The courts have started to wrestle with issues of privacy, intellectual property rights, crimes, and impediments to Internet driven economy.
Book Synopsis Foundations of Quantization for Probability Distributions by : Siegfried Graf
Download or read book Foundations of Quantization for Probability Distributions written by Siegfried Graf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-05-16 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the rapidly increasing need for methods of data compression, quantization has become a flourishing field in signal and image processing and information theory. The same techniques are also used in statistics (cluster analysis), pattern recognition, and operations research (optimal location of service centers). The book gives the first mathematically rigorous account of the fundamental theory underlying these applications. The emphasis is on the asymptotics of quantization errors for absolutely continuous and special classes of singular probabilities (surface measures, self-similar measures) presenting some new results for the first time. Written for researchers and graduate students in probability theory the monograph is of potential interest to all people working in the disciplines mentioned above.

Book Synopsis European Corporate Law by : Adriaan F.M. Dorresteijn
Download or read book European Corporate Law written by Adriaan F.M. Dorresteijn and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2016-04-24 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully updated new edition provides the best-known practical overview of the law regarding companies, business activities, and capital markets in Europe, at both the European Union (EU) and Member State levels. It incorporates analysis of recent developments including the impact of global initiatives in such aspects of the corporate environment as regulation of financial institutions and non-financial reporting obligations with a view to sustainability and other social responsibility concerns. The authors, all leading experts in European corporate law, describe current and emerging trends in such areas of corporate law practice as the following: - rules on cross-border mergers; - employee involvement in business activities; - the initiatives by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the EU to curb tax avoidance; - Member States’ implementation of EU legislation; - a company’s freedom to incorporate in a jurisdiction not its own; - competition among the legal forms of different Member States; and - safeguarding of employee involvement in cross-border transactions. With respect to national law, the laws of Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom are taken into account; Italy is now included in this new edition. As in earlier editions, the authors demonstrate that analysis and comparison of national corporate laws yield highly valuable general principles and observations, not least because business organizations, wherever located, tend to show a fundamentally similar set of legal characteristics. The Third Edition will continue to be of great value to practitioners and academics who wish to acquire a better understanding of European corporate law, in its supranational dimension as well as in the similarities and differences among the various national legal systems.
Book Synopsis Organisation and Work Beyond 2000 by : Birger Rapp
Download or read book Organisation and Work Beyond 2000 written by Birger Rapp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-01-10 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth International Telework Workshop was held in Stockholm in the fall of 2000. The conference was attended by almost 100 participants from all continents of the world. It therefore covered a broad range of subjects relating to Telework. Its success was in some part due to the work of the program committee composed of Birger Rapp (General Chairman), Maarten Botterman, Geoff Dick, Gil Gordon, Ursula Huws, Paul Jackson, Peter Johnston, Patricia L. Mokhtarian, Victor de Pous, Lars Qvotrup, Wendy Spinks and Reirna Suomi. After the conference we decided to write a book on the theme "Organization and the future after 2000". Many of the participants as well as others were invited to contribute a chapter of about ten pages. The resulting book of almost 400 pages therefore provides a comprehensive overview of ongoing research in the field of Telework. Birger Rapp and Paul Jackson edited the book. The intended audience for this book spans disciplinary and professional boundaries. It primarily relates to the disciplines of Business and Management Studies, Information Management, E-commerce and E-business. In a broader sense, it relates to Sociology, Media Studies and Economics.
