This has led to questions like that of the behaviour of functions by repeating this substitution and when the number of iterations tends to infinity. The terms 'orbit' and 'chaos' appropriately describe this behaviour. Dynamical systems and the theory of functional equations play important roles in this field.

Book excerpt: The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded, largely due to the driving energy of Michiel Hazewinkel on the 14th April, 1986 in Neustadt-Mussbach in West Germany. The founder signatories were A. Bensoussan (INRIA, Paris), A. Fasano (University of Florence), M. Hazewinkel (CWI, Amsterdam), M. Heilio (Lappeenranta University, Finland), F. Hodnett (University of Limerick, Ireland), H. Martens (Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim), S. McKee (University of Strathclyde, Scotland), H. NeURzert (University of Kaiserslautern, Germany), D. Sundstrom (The Swedish Institute of Applied Mathematics, Stockholm), A. Tayler (University of Oxford, England) and Hj. Wacker (University of Linz, Austria). The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry is dedicated to: (a) promote the use of mathematical models in Industry (b) educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts (c) operate on a European scale. ECMI is still a young organisation but its membership is growing fast. Although it has still to persuade more industrialists to join, ECMI certainly operates on a European scale and a flourishing postgraduate programme with student exchange has been underway for some time. It is perhaps fitting that the first open meeting of ECMI was held at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Glasgow is and was the industrial capital of Scotland and was, and arguably still is, Britain's second city after London; when this volume appears it will have rightly donned the mantle of the cultural capital of Europe.

Book excerpt: The stability problem for approximate homomorphisms, or the Ulam stability problem, was posed by S. M. Ulam in the year 1941. The solution of this problem for various classes of equations is an expanding area of research. In particular, the pursuit of solutions to the Hyers-Ulam and Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability problems for sets of functional equations and ineqalities has led to an outpouring of recent research. This volume, dedicated to S. M. Ulam, presents the most recent results on the solution to Ulam stability problems for various classes of functional equations and inequalities. Comprised of invited contributions from notable researchers and experts, this volume presents several important types of functional equations and inequalities and their applications to problems in mathematical analysis, geometry, physics and applied mathematics. "Functional Equations in Mathematical Analysis" is intended for researchers and students in mathematics, physics, and other computational and applied sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to survey the relations between the various kinds of chaos and related notions for continuous interval maps from a topological point of view. The papers on this topic are numerous and widely scattered in the literature; some of them are little known, difficult to find, or originally published in Russian, Ukrainian, or Chinese. Dynamical systems given by the iteration of a continuous map on an interval have been broadly studied because they are simple but nevertheless exhibit complex behaviors. They also allow numerical simulations, which enabled the discovery of some chaotic phenomena. Moreover, the “most interesting” part of some higher-dimensional systems can be of lower dimension, which allows, in some cases, boiling it down to systems in dimension one. Some of the more recent developments such as distributional chaos, the relation between entropy and Li-Yorke chaos, sequence entropy, and maps with infinitely many branches are presented in book form for the first time. The author gives complete proofs and addresses both graduate students and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: maps whose topological entropy is equal to zero (i.e., maps that have only cyeles of pe 2 riods 1,2,2 , ... ) are studied in detail and elassified. Various topological aspects of the dynamics of unimodal maps are studied in Chap ter 5. We analyze the distinctive features of the limiting behavior of trajectories of smooth maps. In particular, for some elasses of smooth maps, we establish theorems on the number of sinks and study the problem of existence of wandering intervals. In Chapter 6, for a broad elass of maps, we prove that almost all points (with respect to the Lebesgue measure) are attracted by the same sink. Our attention is mainly focused on the problem of existence of an invariant measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We also study the problem of Lyapunov stability of dynamical systems and determine the measures of repelling and attracting invariant sets. The problem of stability of separate trajectories under perturbations of maps and the problem of structural stability of dynamical systems as a whole are discussed in Chap ter 7. In Chapter 8, we study one-parameter families of maps. We analyze bifurcations of periodic trajectories and properties of the set of bifurcation values of the parameter, in eluding universal properties such as Feigenbaum universality.

Book excerpt: In this volume, the authors present a collection of surveys on various aspects of the theory of bifurcations of differentiable dynamical systems and related topics. By selecting these subjects, they focus on those developments from which research will be active in the coming years. The surveys are intended to educate the reader on the recent literature on the following subjects: transversality and generic properties like the various forms of the so-called Kupka-Smale theorem, the Closing Lemma and generic local bifurcations of functions (so-called catastrophe theory) and generic local bifurcations in 1-parameter families of dynamical systems, and notions of structural stability and moduli. - Covers recent literature on various topics related to the theory of bifurcations of differentiable dynamical systems - Highlights developments that are the foundation for future research in this field - Provides material in the form of surveys, which are important tools for introducing the bifurcations of differentiable dynamical systems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaotic behavior arises in a variety of control settings. In some cases, it is beneficial to remove this behavior; in others, introducing or taking advantage of the existing chaotic components can be useful for example in cryptography. Chaos in Automatic Control surveys the latest methods for inserting, taking advantage of, or removing chaos in a variety of applications. This book supplies the theoretical and pedagogical basis of chaos in control systems along with new concepts and recent developments in the field. Presented in three parts, the book examines open-loop analysis, closed-loop control, and applications of chaos in control systems. The first section builds a background in the mathematics of ordinary differential and difference equations on which the remainder of the book is based. It includes an introductory chapter by Christian Mira, a pioneer in chaos research. The next section explores solutions to problems arising in observation and control of closed-loop chaotic control systems. These include model-independent control methods, strategies such as H-infinity and sliding modes, polytopic observers, normal forms using homogeneous transformations, and observability normal forms. The final section explores applications in wireless transmission, optics, power electronics, and cryptography. Chaos in Automatic Control distills the latest thinking in chaos while relating it to the most recent developments and applications in control. It serves as a platform for developing more robust, autonomous, intelligent, and adaptive systems.

Book excerpt: This book is essentially devoted to complex properties (Phase plane structure and bifurcations) of two-dimensional noninvertible maps, i.e. maps having either a non-unique inverse, or no real inverse, according to the plane point. They constitute models of sets of discrete dynamical systems encountered in Engineering (Control, Signal Processing, Electronics), Physics, Economics, Life Sciences. Compared to the studies made in the one-dimensional case, the two-dimensional situation remained a long time in an underdeveloped state. It is only since these last years that the interest for this research has increased. Therefore the book purpose is to give a global presentation of a matter, available till now only in a partial form. Fundamental notions and tools (such as “critical manifolds”), as the most part of results, are accompanied by many examples and figures.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the two main directions of one-dimensional dynamics. The first has its roots in the Sharkovskii theorem, which describes the possible sets of periods of all cycles (periodic orbits) of a continuous map of an interval into itself. The whole theory, which was developed based on this theorem, deals mainly with combinatorial objects, permutations, graphs, etc.; it is called combinatorial dynamics. The second direction has its main objective in measuring the complexity of a system, or the degree of “chaos” present in it; for that the topological entropy is used. The book analyzes the combinatorial dynamics and topological entropy for the continuous maps of either an interval or the circle into itself.

Each volume in the series shall be devoted to the mathematical analysis that has been applied or potentially applicable to the solutions of scientific, engineering, and social problems. For the past twenty five years, there has been an explosion of interest in the study of nonlinear dynamical systems. Mathematical techniques developed during this period have been applied to important nonlinear problems ranging from physics and chemistry to ecology and economics. All these developments have made dynamical systems theory an important and attractive branch of mathematics to scientists in many disciplines. This rich mathematical subject has been partially represented in this collection of 45 papers by some of the leading researchers in the area. This volume contains 45 state-of-art articles on the mathematical theory of dynamical systems by leading researchers. It is hoped that this collection will lead new direction in this field.Contributors: B Abraham-Shrauner, V Afraimovich, N U Ahmed, B Aulbach, E J Avila-Vales, F Battelli, J M Blazquez, L Block, T A Burton, R S Cantrell, C Y Chan, P Collet, R Cushman, M Denker, F N Diacu, Y H Ding, N S A El-Sharif, J E Fornaess, M Frankel, R Galeeva, A Galves, V Gershkovich, M Girardi, L Gotusso, J Graczyk, Y Hino, I Hoveijn, V Hutson, P B Kahn, J Kato, J Keesling, S Keras, V Kolmanovskii, N V Minh, V Mioc, K Mischaikow, M Misiurewicz, J W Mooney, M E Muldoon, S Murakami, M Muraskin, A D Myshkis, F Neuman, J C Newby, Y Nishiura, Z Nitecki, M Ohta, G Osipenko, N Ozalp, M Pollicott, Min Qu, Donal O-Regan, E Romanenko, V Roytburd, L Shaikhet, J Shidawara, N Sibony, W-H Steeb, C Stoica, G Swiatek, T Takaishi, N D Thai Son, R Triggiani, A E Tuma, E H Twizell, M Urbanski; T D Van, A Vanderbauwhede, A Veneziani, G Vickers, X Xiang, T Young, Y Zarmi.

It addresses the coexistence of cycles for continuous interval maps and one-dimensional spaces, combinatorial dynamics on the interval and multidimensional dynamical systems. Also featured is a short chapter of personal remarks by O.M. Sharkovsky on the history of the Sharkovsky ordering, the discovery of which almost 60 years ago led to the inception of combinatorial dynamics. Now one of cornerstones of dynamics, bifurcation theory and chaos theory, the Sharkovsky ordering is an important tool for the investigation of dynamical processes in nature. Assuming only a basic mathematical background, the book will appeal to students, researchers and anyone who is interested in the subject.
