However, there are indications of emerging strains in some sectors and asset classes.
Book Synopsis Expansion Strategies of European Banks to Brazil and Their Impacts on the Brazilian Banking Sector by : Luiz Fernando Rodrigues de Paula

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims at analyzing the main determinants and impacts of the recent wave of European banks entering Brazil. The principal hypothesis of the paper is that the wave of European banks can only be understood if one considers both external and internal determinants. External determinants concern the process of banking consolidation in the European financial system under the EMU that has stimulated some banks to expand abroad. Internal determinants are mainly related to the gradual flexibilisation of legal restrictions with respect to the presence of foreign banks in the Brazilian banking sector. Finally, the paper evaluates the impacts of the recent entry of European banks into the retail banking market in Brazil. In this particular matter, it shows that foreign entry has affected the national banking market forcing domestic banks to operate more efficiently, and also to expand their activities organically or by mergers and acquisitions. The paper concludes that there is no clear evidence that foreign banks have been more efficient than domestic banks in Brazil in the recent period, but there is some evidence that the big private Brazilian banks have reacted positively to the entry of foreign banks.

Book Synopsis Do Brazilian Banks Compete? by : Ms.Agnes Belaisch
Download or read book Do Brazilian Banks Compete? written by Ms.Agnes Belaisch and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More developed financial systems are associated with higher investment and better economic performance. This paper discusses possible factors that may inhibit a deepening of bank intermediation and more efficient banking in Brazil, two aspects that are found to be significantly different than in leading banking systems in other parts of the world. Using panel data, it finds positive evidence of the presence of a noncompetitive market structure in the Brazilian banking system, a factor that could explain why intermediation may be relatively low and costly. When banks behave like local monopolies or oligopolies, incentives to improve efficiency are weak and the interest rate spread is large, discouraging higher lending volumes.

This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Brazil 2012 FSAP, the financial system has been stable despite the deep recession. The resiliency of the banking system was supported by high profitability, buoyed by large interest margins. While the financial system has grown since the 2012 FSAP, its structure remains largely unchanged. The system is dominated by large, vertically-integrated financial conglomerates and concentrated in liquid short-term instruments. The public sector continues to play a dominant role in the financial sector, and its interconnectedness. Banks are broadly resilient to severe macrofinancial shocks. Current high profits and capital ratios support the resiliency of banks under a severe stress test scenario. Under the stress scenario, small capital shortfalls result; banks would nevertheless experience reduced income, including from market loss on government bonds, and high credit losses on exposures to the corporate sector which, despite recent improvement, is still vulnerable to shocks. This benign outcome deteriorates if their capital is adjusted for deferred tax assets. Moreover, some banks are exposed to concentration risk. Some actions are still needed to address bank-specific risk profiles to boost their resilience. Banks are generally well-positioned to manage short-term and medium-term liquidity pressures and interbank contagion seems limited.
Book Synopsis Reform of Latin American Banking Systems by : Joseph Jude Norton
Download or read book Reform of Latin American Banking Systems written by Joseph Jude Norton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-02-22 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses current issues affecting the development of banking activities in the Latin American region, together with various perspectives on possible reform. It presents a comparative study of several Latin American banking systems and their supervisory bodies, and examines the institutional structures put in place following the reforms of the last decade. There is further discussion about the relationship that should exist between regulations and discretionary power when banks face difficulties. These various subjects are explored through national case studies including Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Bolivia, Guatemala, Argentina, Costa Rica, and - by way of comparison - the United States and Canada. In addition, the book covers general discussion of the wider international context. There is comparative study of the structure of supervisory bodies in developed countries and the implications for developing countries, and of how recent international trends in banking supervision have been reflected in the experiences of Latin American countries. The authors examine the recent crises experienced by South East Asian financial systems and the ways in which they could impact Latin America. The book also investigates the integration of banking markets at an international level and the harmonisation of different regulatory frameworks. A study of the European Union experience provides a background for the discussion of harmonisation in the MERCOSUR countries.

Book Synopsis A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe by : Manfred Pohl
Download or read book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe written by Manfred Pohl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century the European banking sector experienced countless mergers and acquisitions. The outcome of this century of consolidation is strikingly similar across the continent, with the banking sector of each country now dominated by a handful of giant banking corporations. Consolidation and concentration trends in banking was the theme of the Academic Archive Colloquium of the European Association for Banking History held in Madrid in June 1997. This volume is comprised of the 18 papers and responses presented at the Colloquium by a truly international group of delegates. Some of the themes explored in the book include: the significance of mergers for bank archives; the regulation of mergers and their impact on banking legislation; reactions to consolidation from within and without the banking industry; case studies of particular mergers and their impact on the wider banking community. Youssef Cassis's introductory chapter provides a general survey of trends in the consolidation process and suggests that the advent of the Euro may herald a new era in the history of European banking consolidation.

Book Synopsis Statecrafting Monetary Authority by : Lourdes Sola
Download or read book Statecrafting Monetary Authority written by Lourdes Sola and published by Centre for Brazilian Studies. This book was released on 2006 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banking and finance are often studied as specialized domains, governed by their own esoteric rules and concepts, and best cordoned off from broader comparative, historical and political considerations. This book develops an alternative approach. It focuses on the recent, strikingly deviant, experience of Brazil but goes well beyond that single case. It assesses financial sector reform and the consolidation of legitimate monetary authority in an era of globalization and democratization, and advocates the adoption of a holistic and contextualized perspective. It explores the cumulative potential of an incremental 'statecrafting' approach, in contrast to recently fashionable technical 'fixes' such as the idea that central bank independence provides a reliable and universal remedy for all monetary ills.

Book Synopsis Public Banks in the Age of Financialization by : Christoph Scherrer
Download or read book Public Banks in the Age of Financialization written by Christoph Scherrer and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks the important question of whether public banks are a better alternative to profit-seeking private banks. Do public banks provide finance for development? Do they serve as stability anchors in financial markets? What kind of governance keeps public banks accountable to the public? Theoretically the book draws on the works of Minsky for the question on stability and on interpretative policy analysis for the issue of governance. It compares empirically three countries with significant public banks: Brazil, Germany, and India.
