Book excerpt: When Dutch and subsequently French voters rejected the Draft Treaty for a Constitution for Europe in Spring 2005, many voices called for a pause for reflection. This book is, in part, a result of that moment of reflection. We wanted to contribute to the debate about Europe but crucially, we sought to do so by taking a step back from the problem formation and agenda-setting of Brussels. For the authors of this volume, one key to establishing critical distance has been the reappraisal of the historical perspective. Another has been the problematisation of 'Europe as a space' as opposed to looking for a definition of borders. The authors also seek critical distance through a focus on the tension between Europe as a culture, as a polity and as an economy. These tensions have often been neglected or even ignored and the relationships have been seen as more or less synonymous and harmonious. The aim of this volume, then, is two-fold. It wants, developing a critical distance to the present Europe, to contribute to the vivid academic research and debate on Europe, which too often either develops distance without commenting on the present state of affairs or comments on the present without critical distance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Union Enlargement provides a comparative analysis of the post-war European policies of those states that joined the European Union between 1973 and 1995. The volume draws upon new empirical research in order to investigate the policies that these 'newcomer' states have had towards Europe since 1945, with an emphasis on their experience of membership and its possible Europeanising effect. A final comparative chapter draws the national European policies of the 'newcomers' together and outlines what they have brought to the EU. The book also tests integration theories against the available evidence, demonstrating their limited explanatory value and the economic, political and cultural specificity of different national paths towards EU integration.

Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I in 1914 and the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the contributors to this volume consider the reactions of German writers, artists and intellectuals to each of these wars. In Germany, the first war evoked a broad base of nationalist feeling that touched even those individuals most remembered today for their stances of opposition during the second war. These essays note the changes or intensifications of earlier positions among the German cultural community.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. "... the collection is undoubtedly one of the most complete and wide-ranging historical examinations of the debates in the Federal Republic during the integration process. Its numerous contributions are both excellent and original." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Community and the Common Market of our day are deeply rooted in World War I and its aftermath. Demonstrating that during the second half of the 1920s the question of a European federation was extensively debated, Pegg reveals that the proponents of federation became convinced that the future was with them and that a European structure would gradually evolve, and he gives the substance of the thinking of several scores of men and women who were most active in the debate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995 none of the political parties representing the peoples of Bosnia preferred a federal option. Yet, Bosnia became a federal state, highly decentralised and with a complex institutional architecture. This solution was imposed on them by international actors as a result of peace negotiations following the Yugoslav wars. Political parties in post-war Bosnia were not willing to identify with or accept the federation. The international community intervened taking over key decisions and so Bosnia and Herzegovina became the first state to experience a new model of federalism, namely ’imposed federalism’ and a new model of a federal state, that of the ’internationally administered federation’. By combining comparative politics, conflict analysis and international relations theory Soeren Keil offers a unique analysis of federalism in post-Dayton Bosnia and Herzegovina. By exploring this model of ’imposed federalism’ not only does this study greatly contribute to the literature on developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina it also re-evaluates comparative federalism in theory and practice. This study also offers important conclusions for similar cases, both in the Western Balkans region and the wider world, where international involvement and federalism as a method of conflict resolution in diverse societies becomes ever more prevalent and important.
