Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic materials are a dominant factor in many areas of modern technology. The need to understand'them is paramount; this book addresses that need. The main aim of this volume is to provide a broad unified view of electronic materials, including key aspects of their science and technology and also, in many cases, their commercial implications. It was considered important that much of the contents of such an overview should be intelligible by a broad audience of graduates and industrial scientists, and relevant to advanced undergraduate studies. It should also be up to date and even looking forward to the future. Although more extensive, and written specifically as a text, the resulting book has much in common with a short course of the same name given at Coventry Polytechnic. The interpretation of the term "electronic materials" used in this volume is a very broad one, in line with the initial aim. The principal restriction is that, with one or two minor exceptions relating to aspects of device processing, for example, the materials dealt with are all active materials. Materials such as simple insulators or simple conductors, playing only a passive role, are not singled out for consider ation. Active materials might be defined as those involved in the processing of signals in a way that depends crucially on some specific property of those materials, and the immediate question then concerns the types of signals that might be considered.

Traditionally they have been employed in applications associated with engineering ceramics where either high temperature strength or stability is of primary importance. In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the interesting electrical, thermal and optical properties exhibited by these materials, and the fact that many can be prepared as monolithic ceramics, single crystals and thin films. In practical terms carbides, nitrides and borides offer the prospect of a new generation of semiconductor materials, for example, which can function at very high temperatures in severe environmental conditions. However, as yet, we have only a limited understanding of the detailed physics and chemistry of the materials and how the preparation techniques influence the properties. Under the auspices of the NATO Science Committee an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was held on the Physics and Chemistry of Carbides, Nitrides and Borides (University of Manchester, 18-22 September, 1989) in order to assess progress to date and identify the most promising themes and materials for future research. An international group of 38 scientists considered developments in 5 main areas: The preparation of powders, monolithic ceramics, single crystals and thin films; Phase transformations, microstructure, defect structure and mass transport; Materials stability; Theoretical studies; Electrical, thermal and optical properties of bulk materials and thin films.

While the crisis itself led to severe economic and political consequences, its primary cause was an inappropriate mix of policies, as regional economies attempted to simultaneously maintain fairly rigid exchange rates (soft US dollar pegs) and monetary policy autonomy in the presence of large-scale capital outflows. The chapters in this volume focus on selected exchange rate, monetary and financial issues and policies that are of contemporary relevance and importance to Asia, including choice of exchange rate regimes, causes and consequences of reserve accumulation, international capital flows, macroeconomic synchronization, and regional monetary and financial cooperation.

The volume has chapters about prokaryotic as well as eukaryotic systems that are used as so-called model organisms in modern cell biology. These systems include the most popular systems, such as budding and fission yeast, the roundworm C. elegans, the fly Drosophila, zebrafish, mouse, and Arabidopsis, but also organisms that are less frequently used in cell biology, such as Chlamydomonas, Dictyostelium, Trypanosoma, faltworms, Axolotl and others. In addition, tissues and tissue culture systems are also covered. These systems are used for very diverse areas of cell biology, such as cell division, abscission, intracellular transport, cytoskeletal organization, tissue regeneration and others. Moreover, this issue presents the currently most important methods for the preparation of biological specimens. This volume, however, is not a classic EM methods book. The methods are not the main focus of this issue. The main goal here is to cover the methods in the context of the specific requirements of specimen preparation for each model organism or systems. This will be the first compendium covering the various aspects of sample preparation of very diverse biological systems. - Covers the preparation and analysis of model systems for biological electron microscopy - Includes the most popular systems but also organisms that are less frequently used in cell biology - Presents the currently most important methods for the preparation of biological specimens - First compendium covering the various aspects of sample preparation of very diverse biological systems

Book excerpt: Electron Microscopy Methods and Protocols is designed for the established researcher as a manual for extending knowledge of the field. It is also for the newcomer who wishes to move into the field. A wide range of applications for the examination of cells, tissues, biological macromolecules, molecular structures, and their interactions are discussed. We have tried to gather together methods that we consider to be those most generally appli- ble to current research in both cell and molecular biology. Each chapter c- tains a set of related practical protocols with examples provided by experts who have first-hand knowledge of the techniques they describe. The individual chapters are grouped according to similarities in their specimen preparation and methodology. Methods are presented in detail, in a step-by-step fashion, using reproducible protocols the authors have personally checked. During the last decade, the scientific literature describing the use of colloidal gold as an immunocytochemical marker has increased at an ex- nential rate, and this trend is expected to continue. We have included a large number of variations on the immunogold labeling technique. In both the ne- tive staining and cryo chapters, authors emphasize the “immunological app- cations” in order to correlate as fully as possible with the emphasis on immunogold labeling in the other chapters. Electron Microscopy Methods and Protocols commences with the routine preparation of biological material for classical transmission electron microscopy involving tissue fixation, embedding, and sectioning (Chap. 1).

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Surfaces and Interfaces of Ceramic Materials, held on the Oleron island, France, in September 1988. This Institute was organized in nine months after receiving the agreement of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division. Despite this very short time, most of the lecturers contacted have accepted our invitation to prepare a specific talk. The meeting was held at "La Vieille Perrotine" on the Oleron island. This holiday village of the French CNRS is located near the Ocean in a natural area which contributed to create a very pleasant atmosphere favourable to develop interaction between the 91 participants in this Institute. First of all, the Institute was aimed at diffusing the foremost results on the characterization of and the role played by surfaces, grain boundaries and interfaces in preparation and overall properties of ceramic materials, mainly of oxide ceramics. Through its interdisciplinary character, the Institute was also aimed at developing interaction between scientists and engineers interested in basic and practical aspects of processing and use of ceramics.

Book excerpt: Principles and Practices in Plant Ecology: Allelochemical Interactions provides insights and details recent progress about allelochemical research from the ecosystem standpoint. Research on chemical ecology of allelochemicals in the last three decades has established this field as a mature science that interrelates the research of biologists, weed and crop scientists, agronomists, natural product chemists, microbiologists, ecologists, soil scientists, and plant physiologists and pathologists. This book demonstrates how the influence of allelochemicals on the various components of an ecosystem-including soil microbial ecology, soil nutrients, and physical, chemical, and biological soil factors-may affect growth, distribution, and survival of plant species. Internationally renowned exper†s discuss how a better understanding of allelochemical phenomena can lead to true sustainable agriculture.
