Book Synopsis The Sabaite Heritage in the Orthodox Church from the Fifth Century to the Present by : Joseph Patrich
Download or read book The Sabaite Heritage in the Orthodox Church from the Fifth Century to the Present written by Joseph Patrich and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Sabas (439-532 CE), was one of the principal leaders of Palestinian monasticism, that had flourished in the sixth century in the desert of Jerusalem. As an abbot he was the first in Palestine to formulate a monastic rule in writing, and his activity as an ecclesiastical leader bore upon the life of the entire Christian community in the Holy land. He and his monks were active in the theological disputes that affected the fate of the Christian Church of Palestine, and shaped it as a stronghold of Orthodoxy. But his activity has transcended his place and time. His largest monastery - the Great Laura (Mar saba), functioned from the sixth to the ninth century as the intellectual centre of the See of Jerusalem. The most distinguished among its authors were Cyril of Scythopolis, Leontius of Byzantium, John Moschus and Sophronius, Antiochus Monachos, John of Damascus, Cosmas the Hymnographer, Leontius of Damascus and Stephen Mansur. Their treatises on dogma, and prayer, shaped Orthodox theology, liturgy and hymnography in Palestine and beyond. This literary activity in Greek was complemented by scribal activity of copying and translating of Greek manuscripts into Arabic and Georgian. There was also original composition in Arabic by Theodore Abu Qurrah and others. Monastic life in Mar Saba, that continued under Muslim rule with only short intermissions, preserved the Sabaite tradition, and contributed to its reputation, parallel to that of Jerusalem. Sabaite monks were renown as paragons of monasticism and dogma, who had inspired monastic and ecclesiastical reformers in later centuries throughout the Orthodox world. Its fame spread far and wide, from Rome and North Africa in the west, to Serbia, Russia and Georgia in the east, affecting Christian dogma and liturgy therein. The thirty-one studies included in this volume, each written by an expert in his field, present the various facets of the Sabaite heritage in the Orthodox Church, from the sixth century to the present.

Download or read book The Blessing of Waters and Epiphany written by Nicholas E. Denysenko and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the historical development of the blessing of waters and its theology in the East, with an emphasis on the Byzantine tradition. Exploring how Eastern Christians have sought these waters as a source of healing, purification, and communion with God, Denysenko unpacks their euchology and ritual context. The history and theology of the blessing of waters on Epiphany is informative for contemporary theologians, historians, pastors and students. Offering important insights into how Christians renew Baptism in receiving the blessed waters, this book also proposes new perspectives for theologizing Christian stewardship of ecology in the modern era based on a patristic liturgical synthesis. Denysenko presents an alternative framework for understanding the activity of the Trinity, enabling readers to encounter a vision of how participants encounter God in and after ritual.

Book Synopsis Secret Confession Vol.1-in the Eastern Orthodox Church by : Alexander Ivanovich Almazov

This book was released on with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html In Russian ecclesiastical practical literature there are no studies deliberately devoted to the question of the history of secret confession. True, in recent times we have received separate publications that are closely and even directly in contact with this subject; but all of them are due not to a deliberate undertaking, but to the call of incidental circumstances. Meanwhile, in the sphere of the history of church institutions in general, the history of secret confession, in any case, is a question full of deep interest. We think that the publication of the work now proposed is sufficiently justified by both. It is not our intention to present a comprehensive history of confession; bypassing its internal, dogmatic side, we deal only with the external side, i.e., we offer a historical review of the charter of confession and church-civil resolutions related to confession. Thus, the present work is actually a ritual-canonical study. The connection here of two points of view on the subject is motivated both by a complete presentation of the external side of the confession, and by the peculiarity of the sources for studying its history. Speaking of the latter, we understand the well-known fact that the canonical and liturgical monuments for the history of confession in the Orthodox Eastern Church from time immemorial and until very recently have always been in an inseparable, genetic connection. Setting our task as a review of the actual external historical fate of confession, we then deal with this subject mainly - on the basis of handwritten sources. This is equally applicable to both the ritual and the canonical element in our study. In accordance with such a predominant nature of the sources of the proposed work, the latter embraces in the history of confession the period proper from the tenth to the sixteenth century. - Nevertheless, bearing in mind that a clear idea of the subject of our study in the period from the X century. is possible only if it is presented for the previous time, and that in some particular questions relating to the external historical fate of confession, there must certainly be data delivered from the ancient period of the Church - we found it necessary to touch somewhat on the history of confession - and in the period before 10th century In view of this, to all our research we preface, in the sense of introductory, a brief outline of the external historical fate of confession before the 10th century; Similarly, in particular questions regarding confession discussed in the proposed work, we consider it necessary to communicate with information on them that remained from the time before the 10th century. On the other hand, bearing in mind the indisputable fact that handwritten sources in the practice of confession throughout the Orthodox East did not lose their significance even with the release of printed official church-practical publications on the subject of confession and did not lose until the very latest time - we found it necessary to present in our study the information supplied by the publications just mentioned - from the original ones to the modern ones. - In accordance with both, - this edition offers an experience of the history of secret confession, from the side outlined by us, for the entire time of its existence, and only the main preference is given to information delivered in this case by handwritten monuments. Exploring the ritual side of the subject, we took the latter in the widest possible volume. In accordance with this, in addition to the history of the charter of making confession proper, we found it obligatory for ourselves to present historical sketches and all those charters and ritual elements that are either only in close connection with confession, or owe its origin. In parallel with this, and in a canonical sense, we have set ourselves the task of investigating, as far as possible, the full cycle of questions related to this. Reviewing the subject of research within such limits prompted us to touch upon an abundance of private questions that are in contact with confession. All this led us to the publication of the work, which, in view of its volume, we are compelled to divide into two books, while publishing separate appendices to one and the other of them. – The first of these books is devoted to reviewing the general statute of confession; the second one introduces special statutes and individual elements of prayer related to confession, as well as ecclesiastical and civil regulations regarding the object and subject of confession. The handwritten documents that served as sources for our work, with the exception of three or four, are neither in our country nor in Western literature: they have not yet been published 1 . In view of this, we had to get acquainted with them in Greek and Slavic-Russian originals. Taking into account the large number of such documents, and in particular their remarkable diversity, we were forced, in order to properly elucidate the subject we have touched upon, to get acquainted with the manuscripts as widely as possible. The latter was achieved to some extent by us, since we had the opportunity to study the handwritten codices related to our subject in the most important Russian libraries, in three Western European and three in Eastern Europe.

Book Synopsis Authority in Byzantium by : Pamela Armstrong
Download or read book Authority in Byzantium written by Pamela Armstrong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authority is an important concept in Byzantine culture whose myriad modes of implementation helped maintain the existence of the Byzantine state across so many centuries, binding together people from different ethnic groups, in different spheres of life and activities. Even though its significance to understanding the Byzantine world is so central, it is nonetheless imperfectly understood. The present volume brings together an international cast of scholars to explore this concept. The contributions are divided into nine sections focusing on different aspects of authority: the imperial authority of the state, how it was transmitted from the top down, from Constantinople to provincial towns, how it dealt with marginal legal issues or good medical practice; authority in the market place, whether directly concerning over-the-counter issues such as coinage, weights and measures, or the wider concerns of the activities of foreign traders; authority in the church, such as the extent to which ecclesiastical authority was inherent, or how constructs of religious authority ordered family life; the authority of knowledge revealed through imperial patronage or divine wisdom; the authority of text, though its conformity with ancient traditions, through the Holy scriptures and through the authenticity of history; exhibiting authority through images of the emperor or the Divine. The final section draws on personal experience of three great ’authorities’ within Byzantine Studies: Ostrogorsky, Beck and Browning.

The title of the volume, Bibliophilos: Books and Learning in the Byzantine World, reflects Professor Constantinides’ major contribution to the fields of Greek palaeography, editions of Byzantine texts, Byzantine history, scholarship and education, and Cypriot manuscripts and culture. The volume is introduced by a preface and a tabula gratulatoria dedicated to the honorand, followed by twenty articles, written by seasoned and younger scholars, who are former colleagues and students of Professor Constantinides. These articles, which appear in alphabetical order, offer new material and shed fresh light to the study of Greek manuscripts, binders and scribes, and the life, works and activities of Byzantine scholars, teachers and students, providing editions of unpublished texts, including letters and poems, and exploring various aspects of Byzantine and Cypriot history, literature, art, science and culture. In the process the authors often challenge earlier views and offer new interpretations and insights. Bibliophilos is a book for the student, teacher and scholar of Byzantium in particular, and for every bibliophile in general.
