Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical issue in modern Catholic theology has been the relationship between the doctrine of revelation and the church’s liturgical and sacramental practice. This volume argues that although in the twentieth century Catholic theology increasingly recognized the centrality of Christology—particularly the person of Christ—as the locus of revelation and drew out the crucial implications of Christ as the revelation of God, it was slow to connect this revelatory dynamic with the encounter that occurs within the sacramental space of the liturgy, most notably the Eucharist. Taking the decline of the neoscholastic enterprise in Catholic theology and the challenges posed by modernism as his point of departure, Philip Caldwell traces the evolution of the Catholic theology of revelation in the twentieth century and the vital role played by the liturgical and sacramental renewal movements in reimagining this pivotal theological category. Examining the specific contributions of René Latourelle, Avery Dulles, Salvatore Marsilli, and Gustave Martelet against a background of pre-conciliar ressourcement theology, this volume provides a comprehensive account of why a Trinitarian and Christological construal of liturgy and sacraments as revelation is key to the vision that informed Vatican II and offers constructive theological and ecclesial possibilities for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Nazi concentration camp Dachau, three barracks out of thirty were occupied by clergy from 1938 to 1945. The overwhelming majority of the 2,720 men imprisoned in these barracks were Catholics—2,579 priests, monks, and seminarians from all over Europe. More than a third of the prisoners in the "priest block" died there. The story of these men, which has been submerged in the overall history of the concentration camps, is told in this riveting historical account. Both tragedies and magnificent gestures are chronicled here--from the terrifying forced march in 1942 to the heroic voluntary confinement of those dying of typhoid to the moving clandestine ordination of a young German deacon by a French bishop. Besides recounting moving episodes, the book sheds new light on Hitler's system of concentration camps and the intrinsic anti-Christian animus of Nazism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) completed the vast opera Saint Frans dAssise in 1983, he was mentally and physically exhausted, and believed that this monumental work would be his final compositional statement. In fact, he completed seven further works, and these form the focus of the present study. Christopher Dingle suggests that, following the crisis provoked by the opera, Messiaen's music underwent a discernible change in style. He examines these seven works to identify characteristics of the composer's music, in particular an often overlooked aspect of his technique: harmony. Part I of the book begins with a brief historical survey before discussing Saint Frans dAssise as the work which defines everything that follows. Part II examines the series of miniatures that came after the opera and their links with lairs sur lAu-Del., his final masterpiece. lairs forms the subject of Part III of the book. Each movement is analysed in turn, before the work is considered as a whole and its hidden structure and motivic cohesion is revealed. Finally, Part IV considers the incomplete Concert and key stylistic features of the works of Messiaens final years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Reviews of the First Edition: Fr. Moloney's study truly helps its readers appreciate the Johannization of the Son of Man title. By doing so the author offers not only deeper insights into the Fourth Gospel, but also a fuller appreciation of Him to whom the Fourth Gospel testifies. --The Downside Review Certainly, Moloney's work is a major contribution to the discussion of the Johannine Son of Man, though it will be useful also to students of the Fourth Gospel in general. --Theologishe Zeitschrift One will find Moloney's exegetical approach and results difficult to ignore or gainsay. --Catholic Biblical Quarterly Here is a biblical scholar and his work of which the Australian Church can be justly proud. --The Australasian Catholic Record Every New Testament specialist will welcome this important addition to the ongoing Son of Man discussion in general, and the light shed by this volume on the distinctively Johannine aspects of the question in particular. --The Expository Times No recent work has squarely focused on the centrality of the Son of Man sayings for the Fourth Gospel. Moloney does just that, in a monograph that is unusually readable and direct, yet not lacking in erudition of scholarly care. --Interpretation Moloney's work throughout exhibits a certain right-headedness in the face of some current trends. It is refreshing to be reminded of the evangelist's coherence and consistency, rather than of the complexity and obscurity of his sources. --Journal of Biblical Literature
