Book Synopsis Études de linguistique générale by : Gilbert Lazard
Download or read book Études de linguistique générale written by Gilbert Lazard and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Études de linguistique finno-ougrienne by : Jean Perrot
Download or read book Études de linguistique finno-ougrienne written by Jean Perrot and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Grammaticalization and Pragmatics: Facts, Approaches, Theoretical Issues by : Corinne Rossari
Download or read book Grammaticalization and Pragmatics: Facts, Approaches, Theoretical Issues written by Corinne Rossari and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies collected in this volume deal with pragmatic factors involved in the evolution of grammatical or lexical forms or in the emergence of complex syntactic structures in various languages (Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian and Spanish). They are set against the theoretical framework of grammaticalization. The main methodological tools are cross-linguistic contrastive analysis and diachronic perspective. The two main issues that emerge from these studies are the place of pragmatic factors in language change (input, output or setting/frame of the process) and the existence or otherwise of a prevailing mechanism for explaining change phenomena.

Book Synopsis History of Linguistics 2011 by : Vadim Kasevich
Download or read book History of Linguistics 2011 written by Vadim Kasevich and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a selection of papers presented at the 12th International Conference on the History of the Language Sciences (ICHoLS XII) held in St. Petersburg, Russia, 28 August – 2 September 2011. It begins with contributions on 17th-century rationalist ideas and practical grammar writing, and then covers a great variety of 18th and 19th century topics from Western grammars of Chinese to Saussure’s remarks on semiology of the years 1881–1891. The most noteworthy feature, however, is an entire section devoted to linguistics in Russia from the early Soviet period until the 1950s, including attempts to establish a Marxist view of language as well as phases to critically adapt Western ideas and at times efforts to participate successfully in international linguistic scholarship, both in phonetics and semantics.
Book Synopsis The Intricacy of Languages by : Francesc Feliu
Download or read book The Intricacy of Languages written by Francesc Feliu and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If, as we believe, the history of languages is the history of the construction of an ideal artefact that permits a specific interpretation of the linguistic reality and helps to approve and assimilate a certain zone of diversity, enabling the accumulation of collective historical knowledge and making us identify it with a social community and a territory, then it must be agreed that languages are extremely complex entities. The new linguistic diversity that cultural globalisation and recent population movements have installed in most traditional linguistic territories has probably put the ideology of the national language into a state of crisis and, as a consequence, has made the ancient, intrinsic diversity of all languages visible, at least to the extent that this is still possible. Nowadays, then, the old linguistic diversity of dialects, of parlances, of local lexicons and the cultural forms that are reflected in these, of varieties and previously unsuccessful linguistic entities has been given a new opportunity in a world where the cohesion of societies and the welfare of citizens must be guaranteed using all available means. Looked at this way, the intricacy of languages may even open up an opportunity for local economic and social development.

Book Synopsis Photographing Central Asia by : Svetlana Gorshenina
Download or read book Photographing Central Asia written by Svetlana Gorshenina and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses new theoretical approaches in visual and memory studies that prompted to rethink of the photography of Russian Turkestan of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Attempts to relate the visual unknown documentations to postcolonial criticism also opened up new interpretive arenas, helping to decentralize the analysis of the history of photography. The aim of this volume is to interpret photography as a specific tool that reifies reality, subjectively frames it, and fits it into various political, ideological, commercial, scientific, and artistic contexts. Without reducing the entire argument to the binary of ‘photography and power’, the authors reveal the different modes of seeing that involve distinct cultural norms, social practices, power relations, levels of technology, and networks for circulating photography, and that determined the manner of its (re)use in constructing various images of Central Asia. The volume demonstrates that photography was the cornerstone of imperial media governance and discourse construction in colonial Turkestan of the tsarist and early Soviet periods. The various cases show the complex mechanisms by which images of Turkestan were created, remembered, or forgotten from the nineteenth until the twenty-first century. The book should appeal to scholars of the Russian Empire and Central Asia; of history of photography and visual culture; of memory studies. It should be appropriate for use in upper-level undergraduate courses, and even a broader public.

Book Synopsis Minority Languages from Western Europe and Russia by : Svetlana Moskvitcheva
Download or read book Minority Languages from Western Europe and Russia written by Svetlana Moskvitcheva and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comparative approach within a general framework of studies on minority languages of Western Europe and Russia and former Soviet space, focusing on linguistic, legal and categorization aspects. It is connected to a comparative study of the semantic contents of the terms referring to the different categories of these languages. The volume features multidisciplinary approaches, first linguistic (sociolinguistic and semantic) and legal, and investigates the limits of country-to-country comparisons, mirroring cases from France, Spain, and China with their counterparts from Soviet and later Russian configurations. Special examples, from a region as Ingria and a country as Tajikistan, help to contextualize this approach. In addition, the notion of migration languages, also minority languages, is studied in bilingual contexts, both from external (German, Greek, Chinese ...) and internal origins (Chuvash), linked to the urbanization in contemporary societies that has fostered the presence of these languages in major cities.
