Until now this question has been examined mainly by psychoanalysts, from their own perspective, but here it is investigated by a linguist, who systematically explores two domains. The first is related to the sign and symbol, where the meeting of Freud, Saussure and Hjelmselv occurred; whereas in the second, that of the signifier, Saussure reappears escorted by Lacan. But Freud is not far away, since the.

Book Synopsis Population Distribution and the Management of Urban Growth in Six Selected Urban Regions in Canada by : C. R. Bryant
Download or read book Population Distribution and the Management of Urban Growth in Six Selected Urban Regions in Canada written by C. R. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objectives of this study were: to develop a quantitative picture of the changing population distribution in six selected urban regions (Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver); to identify the principal infrastructure and land use planning issues associated with the changing population patterns in those regions, based on the perceptions and experiences of senior planning professionals; and to identify the policies and strategies developed by regional and municipal governments, and to ascertain perceptions of their success. The report first describes overall patterns of urban growth and interprets the patterns based on a conceptual model of the evolution of an urban-centred region. It then turns attention to the six urban regions, discussing governmental structure, patterns of change, perceptions of issues, and strategies, with discussion centred around a core (usually urban core and suburbs combined) and rural-urban fringe differentiation. Issues and strategies are then synthesized and conclusions are presented concerning critical components for tackling the management of municipalities in the context of changing urban regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In farming systems across Canada, effective risk management is necessary to deal with drought, flooding, and extreme weather, and to adapt to altered climate and weather conditions. Unfortunately, climate change risks and opportunities are not always well understood among researchers and policy makers in the Canadian agri-food sector. This book addresses that gap by providing a wide-ranging synopsis of what climate change means for Canadian agriculture, exploring different approaches to the topic, and presenting examples of current research. It covers all agricultural regions and a wide variety of commodity production and farming systems. This comprehensive survey synthesizes twenty years of research on climate change and Canadian agriculture.

Book Synopsis Agriculture in the City's Countryside by : C. R. Bryant
Download or read book Agriculture in the City's Countryside written by C. R. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Agriculture and urbanisation are often considered to be mutually antagonistic land-uses. But in an increasingly urban-orientated world, agriculture depends on city markets and often has to operate within the complex mosaic of the urban fringe." "This book provides a broad analysis of the nature, structure and relationships of farming in the countryside surrounding cities. From the perspective of resource management and land use planning, the authors explore the biophysical and human dimensions of the organisation of periurban agriculture and identify four main elements around which they present their analysis, the resource base, the market, the farmer, and the role of government." "Bryant and Johnston use case study material mainly from the developed world to demonstrate how conflicts and problems can be resolved to the benefit of farmer and city-dweller. By applying systems theory, they provide a synthesis for understanding how modern agriculture functions under urban influence and how these trends are likely to develop in the future, in the context of conservation, economic factors and technological change." "An essential and stimulating study of a key issue, this book will appeal to students and researchers in urban studies, rural geography, agricultural economics, land-use studies and planning."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Scenario Studies for the Rural Environment by : Job F.Th. Schoute
Download or read book Scenario Studies for the Rural Environment written by Job F.Th. Schoute and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural areas need to fulfil a large variety of functions and to accommodate many activities. The complexity of the problems, limited funds, and the almost irreversible character of some interventions result in a compelling need to evaluate ex ante the effects of alternative solutions for designation of land, for measures to develop infrastructure, and for soil and water management. Scenario studies are undertaken to help manage the complexity, to place bounds on uncertainties, and to create new visions. After an overview of the nature, variety and scope of scenario studies, the book illuminates various European examples and reviews, under the following headings: regional soil and water management; nature development and landscape quality; rural planning and the future of regions.
