Book Synopsis Neutron Diffusion by : S. Chakraverty

Book excerpt: This book is designed for a systematic understanding of nuclear diffusion theory along with fuzzy/interval/stochastic uncertainty. This will serve to be a benchmark book for graduate & postgraduate students, teachers, engineers and researchers throughout the globe. In view of the recent developments in nuclear engineering, it is important to study the basic concepts of this field along with the diffusion processes for nuclear reactor design. Also, it is known that uncertainty is a must in every field of engineering and science and, in particular, with regards to nuclear-related problems. As such, one may need to understand the nuclear diffusion principles/theories corresponding with reliable and efficient techniques for the solution of such uncertain problems. Accordingly this book aims to provide a new direction for readers with basic concepts of reactor physics as well as neutron diffusion theory. On the other hand, it also includes uncertainty (in terms of fuzzy, interval, stochastic) and their applications in nuclear diffusion problems in a systematic manner, along with recent developments. The underlying concepts of the presented methods in this book may very well be used/extended to various other engineering disciplines viz. electronics, marine, chemical, mining engineering and other sciences such as physics, chemistry, biotechnology etc. This book then can be widely applied wherever one wants to model their physical problems in terms of non-probabilistic methods viz. fuzzy/stochastic for the true essence of the real problems.
Book Synopsis Relative High Energy Neutron Yields from Targets Bombarded with Protons and Deuterons (UCRL-440) by : William J. Knox
Download or read book Relative High Energy Neutron Yields from Targets Bombarded with Protons and Deuterons (UCRL-440) written by William J. Knox and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relative neutron yields in the forward direction from various target elements bombarded with 350 Mev protons and 190 Mev deuterons have been measured. Bismuth fission chambers with a threshold of about 50 Mev were used to detect the high energy neutrons. The actual flux of protons or deuterons traversing each target was determined from the activities induced in graphite monitors attached to the target. When a deuteron beam is used, the neutron yields for light elements agree with the values predicted by the deuteron stripping theory. For the heavy elements the observed values are fitted best by adding a function proportional to Z-sq to the stripping theory values. This may be interpreted as evidence for the production of high energy neutrons by the electric field disintegration of the deuteron. The neutron yields from the proton beam vary approximately as (A - Z)(exp(2/3)) for target elements from C to U. This indicates that the heavy elements are not completely transparent to 350 Mev protons. Beryllium has an anomalous neutron yield 50% higher than that for C. Calculations and measurements on the problem of multiple traversals of beam particles through thin targets are presented.
Book Synopsis Neutron Physics by : Karl Heinrich Beckurts
Download or read book Neutron Physics written by Karl Heinrich Beckurts and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon a series of lectures I have occasionally given at the University of Gottingen since 1951. They were meant to introduce the students of experimental physics to the work in a neutron physics laboratory dealing with the problem of measuring neutron flux, diffusion length, Fermi age, effective neutron temperature, absorption cross sections and similar problems. Moreover, these lectures were intended to prepare the students for a subsequent lecture covering the physics of nuclear reactors. The original character of this series of lectures has been retained in the book. It is intended for use by students as well as anyone desiring to work on neutron physics measurements. The first half mainly covers the theory of neutron fields, i. e. essentially diffusion and slowing down theory. The second half is largely concerned with measurements in neutron fields. The appendix contains information and data which, in our experience, are frequently required in a neutron laboratory. The field of nuclear physics proper is briefly touched upon in the first two chapters, but only to the extent necessary for the understanding of the following chapters. The multitude of applications of neutron radiation has not been covered. The conclusion of this manuscript coincided with the end of my long period of activity with the Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik at Gottingen. To Professor HEISENBERG lowe thanks for his advice and suggestions for many of the subjects treated here.

Book excerpt: Although the fission of heavy nuclei was discovered over 75 years ago, many problems and questions still remain to be addressed and answered. The reader will be presented with an old, but persistent problem of this field: The contradiction between Prompt Fission Neutron (PFN) spectra measured with differential (microscopic) experiments and integral (macroscopic and benchmark) experiments (the Micro-Macro problem). The difference in average energy is rather small ~3% but it is stable and we cannot explain the difference due to experimental uncertainties. Can we measure the PFN spectrum with high accuracy? How may we compare results of different experiments to provide better accuracy? Are our traditional theoretical models correct? What can be done to solve the Micro-Macro problem in future? These questions are discussed in this monograph for the reader. The current work will be of interest to graduate students and researchers, particularly those working in nuclear and neutron physics.
