Book excerpt: Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse portent sur l'étude de la dynamique d'un laser Brillouin émettant jusqu'à trois composantes Stokes. Lorsque la puissance de pompe est suffisamment faible, le laser Brillouin génère une unique composante Stokes et ne présente aucune fenêtre de fonctionnement instable. Le comportement ainsi observé contraste avec celui qui est habituellement rencontre dans ce genre de système. Toutefois, les résultats obtenus sont interprétés de manière simple grâce à une analyse modale qui conduit également à une compréhension plus complète du principe général de fonctionnement des lasers Brillouin. En particulier, nous avons montré, grâce à un diagramme de stabilité, que la longueur de la fibre utilisée exerçait une influence déterminante sur le comportement de ce système. A plus haut niveau de pompage, la première composante Stokes devient assez intense pour qu'apparaisse une composante Stokes d'ordre deux qui peut à son tour engendrer l'apparition d'une composante Stokes d'ordre trois. Le comportement dynamique du laser Brillouin a été étudié au cours de ces deux phases de la cascade Stokes. Lorsque seules sont émises deux composantes Stokes, on observe des régimes d'instabilité périodiques et quasi-périodiques. L'émergence de la composante Stokes d'ordre trois s'accompagne de l'apparition de comportements chaotiques. Sur le plan théorique, la prise en compte de l'existence des multiples ondes Stokes a nécessité une extension de la description habituellement employée. Deux modèles ont alors été élaborés pour décrire le comportement du laser lors de chacune des deux étapes du processus de cascade. Pour le premier d'entre eux, les solutions caractérisant l'état stationnaire du système ont été déterminées et l'expression analytique du seuil d'oscillation de la seconde composante Stokes a été calculée. L'étude de la dynamique du laser a été effectuée au moyen de simulations numériques qui ont montré l'existence d'un accord satisfaisant entre résultats théoriques et expérimentaux.

Dans le cadre du modele coherent a trois ondes decrivant le comportement dynamique des lasers brillouin, nous etablissons une relation analytique liant la phase de l'onde stokes a celle de l'onde de pompe. Contrairement aux lasers classiques, nous montrons que le bruit de phase du laser de pompe est transfere a l'onde stokes emise apres avoir ete filtre et reduit. Il en resulte que le temps de coherence de l'onde stokes est beaucoup plus important que celui de l'onde de pompe. Le rapport entre ces deux temps de coherence est donne par un facteur k 2. Ce facteur depend simplement et uniquement du taux de perte de la cavite et du taux d'amortissement de l'onde acoustique. Nous presentons ensuite un protocole experimental dans lequel nous enregistrons la reponse du laser brillouin a une modulation de frequence du laser de pompe. Le rapport entre l'indice de modulation de l'onde de pompe et celui de l'onde stokes nous donne la valeur du coefficient k. Les resultats experimentaux confirment avec succes nos predictions theoriques. Pour terminer, nous appliquons nos methodes d'analyse a un laser brillouin injecte optiquement. Nous demontrons experimentalement et theoriquement que celui-ci emet un rayonnement stable en intensite quelque soit le regime de fonctionnement du laser brillouin.

Cependant la configuration ne permettait pas de l'utiliser à des fins industrielles. Il a fallu attendre les années 90, avec l'arrivée des diodes laser et des réseaux de Bragg pour que la configuration de ce laser évolue vers un système "tout fibre" utilisables dans des applications industrielles. Cependant pour rendre ce système vraiment attractif, la puissance de sortie doit être stable. C'est dans ce contexte que se situe ce travail de thèse. Deux axes essentiels sont développés : l'étude du laser Raman muni d'une fibre standard de télécommunication (laser LSF) et l'étude du laser Raman muni d'une fibre à maintien de polarisation (laser LPMF). Les expériences ont montré que la dynamique du LSF est très riche. En effet la puissance de sortie du signal Stokes est instable et ces instabilités dépendent de la polarisation des différentes ondes se propageant dans la cavité du laser. Le laser PMF quant à lui a un comportement différent : quelque soit l'état de polarisation de l'onde pompe incidente, le signal Stokes en sortie est stable. De plus, nous avons mené une étude résolue en polarisation du laser PMF, mettant en évidence le fait que le laser PMF est constitué de deux lasers indépendants linéairement polarisés le long des axes de biréfringence de la fibre. Ce travail de thèse a également consisté en la modélisation théorique du LSF ainsi que du PMF. Les résultats obtenus sont qualitativement très proches des résultats expérimentaux. Pour cela nous avons inclus dans notre modélisation les effets liés à la polarisation tels que l'effet Kerr et la biréfringence des fibres utilisées.

Réalisés pour la première fois en 1976, ces deux lasers ont depuis lors été l'objet de nombreuses études du fait de leurs applications potentielles (télécommunications, capteurs,) mais aussi du fait qu' ils constituent des systèmes " modèles" permettant d'étudier, sur un plan plus fondamental, certains processus non linéaires d'interaction entre lumière et matière. L'approche entreprise dans les travaux effectués a d'abord consisté à envisager et à étudier les aspects relatifs au comportement dynamique des deux lasers. De manière générale, les paramètres physiques (longueur ou biréfringence de la fibre, polarisation de ]a lumière, présence de composantes Stokes d'ordre supérieur .. ) influant sur la stabilité temporelle du rayonnement Stokes délivré par les deux lasers ont été mis en évidence de manière expérimentale. Les modèles théoriques existants ont ensuite été confrontés à l'expérience; ils ont éventuellement été remis en question et complétés de façon à améliorer la description du laser considéré. Les résultats obtenus sur le comportement dynamique du laser Brillouin ont ouvert des questions plus larges sur la cohérence temporelle de cette source. Les problèmes de transfert du bruit phase et d'intensité dans le laser Brillouin ont alors été étudié expérimentalement et théoriquement. Certaines questions relatives à la nature homogène on inhomogène du processus d'élargissement spectral de la diffusion Brillouin stimulée dans les fibres ont également été examinées. Finalement, les études entreprises sur le laser Raman à fibre ont montré les limites des modèles actuellement utilisés pour décrire e phénomène d'élargissement du spectre optique du laser
