Book excerpt: Cette thèse porte sur le séchage d'un polymère (alcool polyvinylique, PVA) en solution aqueuse associé à un plastifiant et divers additifs. Un chauffage combinant des apports d'énergie par convection et par rayonnement électromagnétique de type infrarouge court est exploité. L'utilisation des infrarouges qui permettent un transfert d'énergie direct et élevé au produit s'avère intéressante à condition de bien quantifier l'impact de l'éclairement infrarouge sur le comportement thermo-hydrique du produit. Dans cette optique, une étude expérimentale et une étude numérique ont été menées. Après avoir caractérisé par différentes mesures les principales propriétés du polymère, des expérimentations ont été réalisées sur un séchoir pilote. L'analyse des cinétiques de séchage a montré la nécessité de développer un modèle de connaissance du comportement thermo-hydrique du produit afin de passer ensuite à une phase d'optimisation du procédé. En parallèle à cette étude expérimentale, un modèle unidimensionnel représentatif des mécanismes gouvernant les transferts de masse et de chaleur au sein du produit a donc été développé. Il permet d'accéder au champ de teneur en eau et à la température au sein du produit, tout en prenant en compte le retrait de la matière. Différentes approches mathématiques ont été envisagées notamment pour s'affranchir des difficultés de résolution liées au retrait de la matière au cours du séchage. La connaissance du coefficient de diffusion en fonction de la température et de la teneur en eau est nécessaire pour une représentation satisfaisante des phénomènes par le modèle. L'estimation de ce paramètre a été réalisée par méthode inverse à partir de cinétiques de séchage en convection forcée. Différentes expérimentations ont servi pour valider ce modèle. A partir du modèle ainsi développé, une approche de type commande optimale a été retenue pour optimiser le procédé de séchage. L'éclairement infrarouge à appliquer au produit est déterminé hors ligne par la minimisation d'une fonctionnelle qui prend en compte des critères au niveau du procédé, notamment la réduction du temps de séchage et le coût énergétique, ainsi que des contraintes sur le produit (température et teneur en eau).
