Book excerpt: Aero engine bearing chambers are complex machine elements inside the engines, supporting up to three concentric shafts on bearings. For safety reasons, the aero engines always employ rolling-element type bearings and therefore require a sufficient oil supply for lubrication in order to guarantee a reliable operation. As a consequence, a complex two-phase flow consisting of oil and sealing air governs the bearing chambers. A highly dynamic oil film, flowing along the chamber walls, plays a vital role to fulfill the tasks of cooling, lubricating and cleaning the bearing chambers. The design and optimization process of the bearing chambers requires a detailed understanding in order to accurately simulate the film behaviour inside the bearing chambers. Based on the earlier experimental investigations, it is known that near the scavenge off-take a relatively thick film exists. The numerical model to simulate these films must therefore take into account the elliptical behaviour of such films. Among the different models, the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) Model offers the best compromise between accuracy and efforts. However, preliminary attempts to model a fully developed and turbulent test case from literature revealed an unphysical pressure drop and velocity profile in the gas phase above the film flow. An inadequate turbulence modelling near the gas-liquid interface was identified as the problem source. The 2-Equation turbulence models (k- epsilon & k- omega) were extended to achieve a substantial improvement.

Book excerpt: LE TRAVAIL PRESENTE DANS CE MEMOIRE CONCERNE L'ETUDE DE LA FORMATION ET DE LA CROISSANCE D'UNE PHASE GAZEUSE PAR DECOMPRESSION D'UN LIQUIDE SURSATURE EN GAZ AU SEIN D'UN MILIEU POREUX. LA MAITRISE DE CETTE SITUATION, QUI SE RENCONTRE LORS DE L'EXPLOITATION DE CERTAINS GISEMENTS DE PETROLE OU GEOTHERMIQUES, EST TOUT A FAIT CAPITALE POUR TRAITER CONVENABLEMENT LES HISTORIQUES DE PRODUCTION DE MASSE OU D'ENERGIE. INSCRIT DANS LA CONTINUITE DES ETUDES ANTERIEUREMENT DEVELOPPEES SUR LE SUJET AU SEIN DE L'INSTITUT DE MECANIQUE DES FLUIDES DE TOULOUSE, LE PRESENT TRAVAIL S'EFFORCE DE REPONDRE A DEUX OBJECTIFS: PREMIEREMENT, COMPLETER L'INVESTIGATION EXPERIMENTALE DEJA EFFECTUEE, EN UTILISANT UNE GAMME PLUS LARGE DE SOLUTIONS, AFIN D'EVALUER NON SEULEMENT L'INFLUENCE DU NOMBRE DE JACOB ET DU TAUX DE DECOMPRESSION MAIS EGALEMENT DE LA MOUILLABILITE ET DE LA GRAVITE SUR LES PHENOMENES ETUDIES, DEUXIEMEMENT, PROPOSER DES MODELES DE SIMULATION NUMERIQUE OFFRANT DES POSSIBILITES D'ANALYSE ET DE PREDICTION AUSSI BIEN DE LA FORMATION DE LA PHASE GAZEUSE (NUCLEATION) QUE DE SA CROISSANCE. POUR DEVELOPPER CE PROGRAMME, EN L'OCCURENCE LIMITE A LA CONFIGURATION 2D (AFIN DE POUVOIR ASSOCIER AUX DONNEES QUANTITATIVES DES OBSERVATIONS PHENOMENOLOGIQUES) ET AUX REGIMES PRINCIPALEMENT CONTROLES PAR LA CAPILLARITE ET LA DIFFUSION MOLECULAIRE (AFIN D'EVITER LA COMPLEXITE DU COUPLAGE DES PHENOMENES HYDRODYNAMIQUES ET MASSIQUES DANS LA SIMULATION NUMERIQUE) DIFFERENTS MOYENS METHODOLOGIQUES ONT ETE ADAPTES, DEVELOPPES ET EVALUES. CES MOYENS CONCERNENT: DU POINT DE VUE EXPERIMENTAL: L'IMPLANTATION D'UN SYSTEME D'ACQUISITION ET DE TRAITEMENT D'IMAGES PERMETTANT LE SUIVI INSTANTANE DE L'APPARITION DES BULLES DE GAZ ET DE LEUR CROISSANCE, DU POINT DE VUE NUMERIQUE: LA CONCEPTION D'UN AUTOMATE PERMETTANT DE REPRODUIRE LA LOCALISATION SPATIALE DES SITES DE NUCLEATION ET SURTOUT LA CROISSANCE DES AMAS GAZEUX. OUTRE LA CONFIRMATION DES MECANISMES DE FORMATION DE LA PHASE GAZEUSE: PREEXISTENCE DE BULLES, PIEGEAGE CAPILLAIRE, ACTIVATION SEQUENTIELLE DES SITES ET CROISSANCE PAR DIFFUSION, LES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX ONT PERMIS DE DISTINGUER ET DE QUANTIFIER LES CONSEQUENCES DE LA SURSATURATION DU MOUILLAGE ET DE LA GRAVITE SUR LA CROISSANCE DE LA PHASE GAZEUSE. LES LOIS OBTENUES SONT TRES DIFFERENTES DE CELLES CONNUES HORS MILIEU POREUX. COMME L'INDIQUE L'ETUDE DE CERTAINS FACTEURS GEOMETRIQUES, ISSUS DE L'ANALYSE D'IMAGES, CES DIFFERENCES SONT FORTEMENT CORRELEES AVEC L'EVOLUTION SPECIFIQUE DE L'AIRE INTERFACIALE, GAZ-LIQUIDE, AU SEIN DE LA MICROSTRUCTURE. LA SIMULATION DU PROCESSUS DE CROISSANCE D'UN AMAS GAZEUX ET D'ENVAHISSEMENT DU MILIEU POREUX A ETE EFFECTUEE A L'AIDE D'UN AUTOMATE NUMERIQUE CONSTRUIT A PARTIR DES OBSERVATIONS, ANALYSES ET INTERPRETATIONS DES PHENOMENES A L'ECHELLE DES PORES. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfer across the surface of environmental waters is of interest as an important phase in the geophysical and natural biochemical cycles of numer ous substances; indeed it governs the transition, one way or the other, be tween the dissolved state in the water and the gaseous state in the atmo sphere. Especially with increasing population and industrialization, gas transfer at water surfaces has become a critical factor in the understanding of the various pathways of wastes in the environment and of their engineering management. This interfacial mass transfer is, by its very nature, highly complex. The air and the water are usually in turbulent motion, and the interface be tween them is irregular, and disturbed by waves, sometimes accompanied by breaking, spray and bubble formation. Thus the transfer involves a wide variety of physical phenomena occurring over a wide range of scales. As a consequence, scientists and engineers from diverse disciplines and problem areas, have approached the problem, often with greatly differing analytical and experimental techniques and methodologies.

Book excerpt: Genmix: A General Computer Program for Two-dimensional Parabolic Phenomena explains a computer program called GENMIX. The main intention of the program is to be used as a tool of instructions. The name of the program is a mixture of two considerations: its generality and its concern for mixing processes. The book aims to help the potential user to understand the physical and mathematical basis of the topic computer program. It is also the aim of the book to make the program applicable to practical problems. The book is arranged in such a way as to parallel a course of lectures and associated computer-workshop sessions wherein the student is allowed to do some elementary computations as soon as he has gained some knowledge of the method. The book contains the mathematical, physical, and computer-coding aspects of the program. Concepts such as the boundary layer, two-dimensional, and steady- flow are defined and discussed in depth. The text will be a useful tool for computer instructors and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.
