Nous proposons dans ce manuscrit, la structure globale du capteur, une méthode pour la reconstruction du relief, une architecture pour une exécution efficace de cette méthode ainsi que la réalisation d'un démonstrateur permettant de valider expérimentalement les concepts présentés.

Cette nécessité a conduit à la réalisation des dispositifs macroscopiques qui avaient tous comme point commun la perception du relief de l'environnement humain. Ces systèmes utilisent diverses méthodes de reconstruction: stéréoscopie passive ou active, temps de vols, etc. Les avancées technologiques laissent entrevoir la possibilité de réaliser des systèmes intégrés de vision en trois dimensions sur puce. Cela ouvre de nouveaux champs applicatifs, comme la vision précise en trois dimensions in vivo dans le corps humain lors d'examen de type endoscopique. A ce jour peu de travaux tendent à concevoir un capteur intégré polyvalent malgré les avantages évidents pour ces nouvelles applications. Jusque là, la principale restriction était due à la taille, à la vitesse de fonctionnement ou à la consommation des appareils. Pour répondre aux besoins d'applications émergentes telles que l'endoscopie 3D, le projet Cyclope a été lancé. Il s'agit d'une action de recherche au sein de laquelle est étudiée la conception d’un capteur de vision 3D intégré temps-réel avec des capacités de communication sans fil basées sur la stéréoscopie active. Ce capteur est alors capable de fournir une représentation texturée en trois dimensions d'une scène. Cette thèse traite de l'analyse des solutions envisageables pour la réalisation d'une instrumentation d'acquisition et de projection du motif et de sa mise en oeuvre. La principale contrainte de notre application consiste en l'acquisition quasi simultanée de la texture de l'image dans le spectre du visible et du motif projeté. Ayant opté pour un laser pulsé dont sa longueur d'onde est dans le proche infrarouge, pour ne pas dénaturer la scène, plusieurs solutions étaient possibles. Malheureusement, aucune d'entre elles n'étaient pleinement satisfaisante. Dans ce contexte, j'ai opté pour une approche d'acquisition énergétique et temporelle basée sur l'existence d'un gap énergétique entre la scène et le motif projeté à cette longueur d'onde. Un démonstrateur macroscopique a été réalisé afin de valider notre approche et d'estimer ces performances. L'ensemble est composé d'une caméra CMOS dotée de CAN 8 bits externe, d'un projecteur de motif infrarouge générant une matrice de 49 points, d'une carte FPGA Xilinx Virtex2Pro et d'un module de communication sans fil ZIGBEE. Sur le FPGA est mis en oeuvre les architectures de contrôle et de synchronisation, de pré-traitements, de reconstruction et de communication. Les performances du systèmes ont été évaluées selon trois axes distincts: les performances de la séparation motif/arrière plan pour différentes conditions d'utilisation, l'impact de la méthode sur la précision de la reconstruction et enfin l'estimation de la consommation énergétique globale du système pour plusieurs cibles.

On peut citer en guise d'exemple un capteur couleur, un capteur infrarouge ou un capteur basse lumière. Cet équipement doit alors supporter différentes sources qui peuvent être hétérogènes en terme de résolution, de granularité de pixels et de fréquence d'émission des images. Cette tendance à multiplier les capteurs, est motivée par des besoins applicatifs dans un but de complémentarité en sensibilité (fusion des images), en position (panoramique) ou en champ de vision. Le système doit par conséquent être capable de supporter des applications de plus en plus complexes et variées, nécessitant d'utiliser une seule ou plusieurs sources d'image. Du fait de cette variété de fonctionnalités embarquées, le système électronique doit pouvoir s'adapter constamment pour garantir des performances en terme de latence et de temps de traitement en fonction des applications, tout en respectant des contraintes d'encombrement.% Même si depuis de nombreuses années, un grand nombre de solutions architecturales ont été proposées pour améliorer l'adaptabilité des unités de calcul, un problème majeur persiste au niveau du réseau d'interconnexion qui n'est pas suffisamment adaptable, en particulier pour le transfert des flux de pixels et l'accès aux données. Nous proposons dans cette thèse un nouveau réseau de communication sur puce (NoC) pour un SoC dédié à la vision. Ce réseau permet de gérer dynamiquement différents types de flux en parallèle en auto-adaptant le chemin de donnée entre les unités de calcul, afin d'exécuter de manière efficace différentes applications. La proposition d'une nouvelle structure de paquets de données, facilite les mécanismes d'adaptation du système grâce à la combinaison d'instructions et de données à traiter dans un même paquet. Nous proposons également un système de mémorisation de trames à adressage indirecte, capable de gérer dynamiquement plusieurs trames image de différentes sources d'image. Cet adressage indirect est réalisé par l'intermédiaire d'une couche d'abstraction matérielle qui se charge de traduire des requêtes de lecture et d'écriture, réalisées suivant des indicateurs de la trame requise (source de l'image, indice temporel et dernière opération effectuée). Afin de valider notre proposition, nous définissons une nouvelle architecture, appelée Multi Data Flow Ring (MDFR) basée sur notre réseau avec une topologie en anneau. Les performances de cette architecture, en temps et en surface, ont été évaluées dans le cadre d'une implémentation sur une cible FPGA.

Pourtant, l'accroissement des applications nécessitant des fonctions d'acquisition est important ! D'où l'idée de développer une méthodologie qui serait applicable au capteur intelligent, dispositif qui réunit sur un même et unique support les fonctions d'acquisition d'images et de traitement d'images. L'objet de cette thèse est non seulement d'élaborer un capteur mais surtout de formaliser et de proposer une méthodologie qui fournit, pour un traitement donné et en parfait accord avec les exigences requises par le demandeur, les architectures capteur et traitement. Les premières études bibliographiques ont permis d'appréhender la vision dans le monde industriel. De ces observations, nous avons dressé les caractéristiques du circuit dédié au contrôle qualité en industrie. La méthodologie développée se veut complémentaire des méthodologies déjà existantes. Seuls deux nouveaux paramètres sont pris en compte, à savoir la proposition d'un modèle d'architecture pour le capteur et les spécifications qui vont entraîner une nouvelle formulation de l'algorithme. La validation de la méthodologie est réalisée pour une application d'estimation de mouvement. Les différentes simulations ont été menées via les logiciels ModelSim, Synopsys, Cadence et en utilisant les modèles de composants de la technologie CMOS 0,8 um d'AMS. Le circuit global qui comporte des fonctions d'acquisition et de traitement admet une surface total de 9 mm2. Le temps de calcul pour une valeur test donnée est de 142 ns pour le traitement seul, soit de l'ordre de 200 ns en considérant le temps de transfert et de chargement. On aboutit à un débit de 1200 Hz par ligne image. Une fois les simulations et les différents tests achevés, la conception du circuit global via le CMP peut être envisagé.

The richness of information present in images makes them the first choice as an input to an artificial system which tries to interact with its environment. A large proportion of the brain of many advanced species is dedicated to visual information processing, which illustrates the importance of visual information in biological systems. Biological visual systems have evolved over millions of years, and each specie has developed a specialized visual system tailored for the essential tasks of survival, such as catching a prey, or escaping a predator. Implementing electronic hardware for image processing, therefore, may benefit from the underlying fundamental aspects of biological vision, though in no respect should this be regarded as a solid framework for electronic vision systems. Traditionally, computer vision algorithms are performed on images captured by conventional cameras, and processing is accomplished by means of general purpose digital computers. More advanced systems utilize dedicated hardware to speed up the processing stage.

We hope that you will find our journey worthwhile and the collated information useful. The laboratories of the authors are located at many universities distributed around the world. Their unifying theme, however, is the advancement of knowledge for the development of systems for CMOS imaging and image processing. We hope that this book will highlight the ideas that have been pioneered by the authors, while providing a roadmap for new practitioners in this field to exploit exciting opportunities to integrate imaging and “smartness” on a single VLSI chip.
