Download or read book The Polar Cusp written by J.A. Holtet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings are based upon introductory talks, research reports and discussions from the NATO Advanced Workshop on the "Morphology and Dynamics of the Polar Cusp", held at Lillehammer, Norway, 7-12 May, 1984. The upper atmosphere at high latitudes is called the "Earth's win dow to outer space". Through various electrodynamic coupling process es as well as through direct transfer of particles many geophysical effects displayed there are direct manifestations of phenomena occurring in the deep space. The high latitude ionosphere will also exert a feedback on the regions of the magnetosphere and atmosphere to which it is coupled, acting as a momentum and energy source and sink, and a source of particles. Of particular interest are the sections of the near space known as the Polar Cusp. A vast portion of the earth's magnetic field envelope is electrically connected to these regions. This geometry results in a spatial mapping of the magnetospheric pro cesses and a focusing on to the ionosphere. In the Polar Cusps the solar wind plasma has also direct access to the upper atmosphere. The polar regions are thus of extreme importance when it comes to under standing the physical processes in the near space and their effect on our environment. The Introductory Talks given at this workshop provided a common background for discussing and understanding the physics of the Polar Cusp. By this book we will make the information which thus was provid ed to the participants of the workshop accessible to a wider audience.

Download or read book Evolutionary Tinkering in Gene Expression written by M. Grunberg-Manago and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Workshop on "Evolutionary Tinkering in Gene Expression" which was held at the end of August 1988. was planned to celebrate 20 successful Advanced Study Institutes (A. S. I.) in Molecular and Cell Biology. The first Institute was held in 1966 on the Island of Spetsai. after a N. A. T. O. suggestion and was entirely financed by N. A. T. O. The success was immediately so great that the Institute grew very rapidly and in the following years. N. A. T. O .• E. M. B. O. (since 1972) and F. E. B. S. (since 1981) co-sponsored it. Since the start of the AS!. the U. S. National Science Foundation has granted travel money for a limited number of American participants each year. In addition. the course was supported by minor industrial subsidies of varying amounts which enabled the organizers to improve some of the local facilities particularly with respect to the lecture hall. In particular. Boehringer Mannheim has contributed since 1966. Furthermore. the Greek Ministry of Science and Culture has provided support at least for a social event during each ASI.
Book Synopsis Living Without Oxygen by : Peter W. Hochachka
Download or read book Living Without Oxygen written by Peter W. Hochachka and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innumerable clinical problems have as their basis some derangement in oxygen-dependent metabolism. To explore mechanisms of adjusting to oxygen limitation, Living without Oxygen presents a bestiary of exotic anaerobes that illuminate elements of metabolic biochemistry only dimly seen in studies using standard experimental animals. With their exaggerated anaerobic capabilities, Hochachka's diving mammals, airbreathing fishes, and hypoxia-adapted lower vertebrates allow a detailed assessment of what can and what cannot be adjusted in the process of extending hypoxia tolerance. The book places the enzymatic and biochemical machinery firmly in the biological context and assumes only a modest familiarity with bioenergetics and metabolic biochemistry. The author's clear prose should make this technical presentation pleasantly unintimidating for any physiologist, biochemist, or clinical investigator. The insights of his unique approach make Living without Oxygen essential reading.
