Book Synopsis Nanoparticles' Promises and Risks by : Mihai Lungu
Download or read book Nanoparticles' Promises and Risks written by Mihai Lungu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this interdisciplinary volume is on four areas of nanoparticle research: characterization, manipulation, and potential effects on humanity and the environment. The book includes a comprehensive collection of data on industrial nanoparticle creation and the characterization of the nanoscale products of these processes. The authors describe the effects of these nanoscale structures on human health and discuss prospective implementations for detection and characterization of nanoparticles in the environment. They recommend, utilizing the most up-to-date understanding of nanotechnology, methods for limiting the negative effects of these products on the environment and human health through manipulation, sorting, and filtration.

Book Synopsis The Tunguska Mystery by : Vladimir Rubtsov
Download or read book The Tunguska Mystery written by Vladimir Rubtsov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is a dual one: to detail the nature and results of Tunguska investigations in the former USSR and present-day CIS, and to destroy two long-standing myths still held in the West. The first concerns alleged “final solutions” that have ostensibly been found in Russia or elsewhere. The second concerns the mistaken belief that there has been little or no progress in understanding the nature of the Tunguska phenomenon. All this is treated by the author in a scholarly and responsible manner. Although the book does present certain unusual findings of Russian and Ukrainian scholars, it is important to stress that this is not a sensational book; it is, rather, a serious exposition of the results of rational investigations into a difficult scientific problem. We are demonstrating the true complexity of the problem that is now entering its second century of existence. Simple meteoritic models cannot explain all the characteristics of this complicated event, and therefore certain so-called “unconventional hypotheses” about the nature of the Tunguska explosion are to be considered as well.

Book Synopsis Accretion of Extraterrestrial Matter Throughout Earth’s History by : Bernhard Peucker-Ehrenbrink
Download or read book Accretion of Extraterrestrial Matter Throughout Earth’s History written by Bernhard Peucker-Ehrenbrink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-10-31 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extraterrestrial matter affecting the earth varies in size from cosmic dust particles to the large meteor thought to have caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. In this volume, 22 contributions from Peucker-Ehrenbrink (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), Schmitz (U. of Goteborg, Sweden) and other international scientists discuss the accretion of extraterrestrial matter on Earth throughout the planet's history. Topics include, for example, the atmospheric entry heating of interplanetary dust, the sedimentary record of impact events, and the cosmic ray exposure history of meteorites. c. Book News Inc.
Download or read book Auroral Physics written by Ching -I. Meng and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, which was first published in 1991, presents a comprehensive review of all aspects of the physics of the aurorae australis and borealis. The broad topics covered relate to the different sections of a conference held in Cambridge to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Professor Sydney Chapman, FRS, who can be considered the founder of the subject in its modern form. Contributions from an international group of experts in the field discuss the physical causes and effects of the aurorae, the nightly show of dancing lights in the atmosphere, at heights above 100 km. The book is aimed primarily at students and researchers in auroral physics, but will also be of interest to magnetospheric, ionospheric and atomospheric physicists.
Book Synopsis Auroral Physics by : David J. Knudsen
Download or read book Auroral Physics written by David J. Knudsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-08-27 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume surveys our current scientific understanding of the terrestrial aurora. It is organized into eleven reviews detailing theoretical and observational aspects of characteristic auroral morphologies, and how these in turn are organized according to local time, latitude, and activity level. Popular descriptions often attribute the aurora to the interaction of charged particles from the solar wind with atoms in the upper atmosphere. In fact, most auroras are not the result of direct entry of solar wind particles. Rather, as detailed in this volume, auroral particle acceleration and generation of auroral forms occur primarily within the magnetosphere. Importantly, many key aspects of the aurora – most notably, the physical mechanisms responsible for the generation of discrete arcs – are still unexplained, and auroral physics continues to be an active area of scientific research. Each review chapter therefore includes a summary of open questions for further investigation. Providing the first comprehensive review of the terrestrial aurora in two decades, this book will aid both active researchers and newcomers interested in understanding the current state of the field.
