Book excerpt: CETTE THESE EST CONSACREE A L'ETUDE DES PROPRIETES DE TRANSPORT DANS LES MULTICOUCHES MAGNETIQUES, EN PARTICULIER DANS DEUX SYSTEMES FER/GADOLINIUM ET ARGENT/NICKEL. DANS LE CAS DU SYSTEME FER/GADOLINIUM, LES COUCHES DE FER ET DE GADOLINIUM SONT COUPLEES ANTIFERROMAGNETIQUEMENT AUX INTERFACES. LA TRANSITION ETAT ALIGNE-ETAT TWISTE A ETE OBSERVEE PAR DES MESURES DE MAGNETORESISTANCE. CETTE TRANSITION S'INTERPRETE BIEN PAR L'UTILISATION DU MODELE THEORIQUE DE CAMLEY. IL FAUT NOTER LA GRANDE SENSIBILITE DES RESULTATS A L'EPAISSEUR DES COUCHES, AU NOMBRE DE BICOUCHES, A LA QUALITE CRISTALLINE DES COUCHES ET LE ROLE IMPORTANT JOUE PAR LES COUCHES EXTERNES. DANS LE SYSTEME ARGENT/NICKEL LE COUPLAGE MAGNETIQUE INDIRECT ENTRE LES COUCHES DE NICKEL PEUT ETRE SOIT ANTIFERROMAGNETIQUE, SOIT FERROMAGNETIQUE EN FONCTION DE L'EPAISSEUR DES COUCHES D'ARGENT. UN EFFET DE MAGNETORESISTANCE GEANTE ET UN COUPLAGE OSCILLANT ENTRE LES COUCHES DE NICKEL PAR L'INTERMEDIAIRE DES ELECTRONS DE CONDUCTION DES COUCHES D'ARGENT ONT ETE MIS EN EVIDENCE. CES PHENOMENES S'INTERPRETENT BIEN PAR UN MODELE A DEUX COURANTS POUR LA MAGNETORESISTANCE GEANTE ET PAR DES MODELES THEORIQUES UTILISANT LES PROPRIETES DES SURFACES DE FERMI DES MATERIAUX. L'ETUDE DU RECUIT THERMIQUE DES MULTICOUCHES ARGENT/NICKEL PERMET DE PREVOIR L'EXISTENCE D'UN PHENOMENE DE MAGNETORESISTANCE GEANTE DANS DES STRUCTURES NON MULTICOUCHES

Book excerpt: NOUS AVONS ETUDIE SOUS CHAMP MAGNETIQUE INTENSE LES PROPRIETES DE TRANSPORT ET MAGNETIQUES DE DEUX SYSTEMES MULTICOUCHES HABITUELLEMENT UTILISES PAR LES OPTICIENS: C/W QUI SERT DE MIROIR RX ET NI/TI QUI SERT DE MIROIR A NEUTRONS. NOUS AVONS ANALYSE LE TRANSPORT ELECTRONIQUE DANS LES MULTICOUCHES C/W EN TERME DE LOCALISATION FAIBLE, ET MIS EN EVIDENCE QUE CES PROPRIETES SONT DOMINEES PAR LES INTERACTIONS ELECTRON-ELECTRON. LE RESULTAT LE PLUS SPECTACULAIRE CONCERNE LES MULTICOUCHES DE FAIBLE PERIODE (15 A DE C ET 20 A DE W) OU UNE EPAISSEUR SI FINE QUE 15 A DE C SUFFIT A RENDRE TOTALEMENT INDEPENDANTES ET DONC BIDIMENSIONNELLES LES COUCHES DE TUNGSTENE. LES MULTICOUCHES NI/TI ELABOREES EGALEMENT PAR PULVERISATION CATHODIQUE PAR B. VIDAL A MARSEILLE, FONT PARTIE DES SYSTEMES: MATERIAU MAGNETIQUE (NI) SEPARE PAR UN MATERIAU NON MAGNETIQUE (TI). NOUS CORRELONS LES PROPRIETES DE TRANSPORT ELECTRONIQUE SOUS FORT CHAMP MAGNETIQUE AUX MESURES D'AIMANTATION; APRES LA SATURATION MAGNETIQUE, NOUS OBSERVONS POUR LA PREMIERE FOIS UNE MAGNETORESISTANCE NEGATIVE A FORT CHAMP MAGNETIQUE QUI PERSISTE A HAUTE TEMPERATURE (200K) ET NE SEMBLE PAS ETRE DUE NI A DES EFFETS DE LOCALISATION NI AU COUPLAGE MAGNETIQUE ENTRE COUCHES DE NI

Book excerpt: NOUS AVONS ETUDIE LA CROISSANCE ET LES PROPRIETES MAGNETIQUES ET ELECTRONIQUES DE SUPER-RESEAUX ET MULTICOUCHES MAGNETIQUES FE/AG, FE/CR, CO/CU ET FE/CU. DANS UNE PREMIERE PARTIE, NOUS DECRIVONS L'ELABORATION DES SUPER-RESEAUX FE/AG SUR LES SUBSTRATS GAAS(001) ET MGO(001) PAR LA TECHNIQUE D'EPITAXIE PAR JETS MOLECULAIRES. LA CARACTERISATION STRUCTURALE DES ECHANTILLONS A ETE MENEE IN-SITU PAR RHEED ET AES ET EX-SITU PAR DIFFRACTION X, EXAFS DE SURFACE ET MICROSCOPIE ELECTRONIQUE. LES RESULTATS OBTENUS PAR CES DIFFERENTES TECHNIQUES METTENT EN EVIDENCE LA BONNE QUALITE CRISTALLINE DES SUPER-RESEAUX FE/AG ET MONTRENT L'ABSENCE D'INTERDIFFUSION SIGNIFICATIVE AUX INTERFACES. DANS UNE DEUXIEME PARTIE, NOUS ABORDONS L'ETUDE DE DEUX PROPRIETES SPECIFIQUES DES MULTICOUCHES MAGNETIQUES: LE COUPLAGE D'ECHANGE ENTRE COUCHES MAGNETIQUES ET LA MAGNETORESISTANCE GEANTE. NOUS MONTRONS QUE LA MAGNETORESISTANCE GEANTE QUI APPARAIT DANS LES SUPER-RESEAUX FE/CR EST TRES SENSIBLE A L'ETAT DES INTERFACES. PAR UN TRAITEMENT THERMIQUE OU PAR UN MELANGE INTENTIONNEL PENDANT LA CROISSANCE, NOUS AVONS PU AUGMENTER LA MAGNETORESISTANCE ET METTRE EN EVIDENCE L'EXISTENCE D'UN OPTIMUM DE RUGOSITE AUX INTERFACES. NOUS AVONS AUSSI EFFECTUE UNE ETUDE PRELIMINAIRE DE LA FORTE VARIATION EN TEMPERATURE DE LA MAGNETORESISTANCE GEANTE DES SUPER-RESEAUX FE/CR. UN MODELE PHENOMENOLOGIQUE, BASE SUR LES COLLISIONS ELECTRONS-MAGNONS, PERMET D'EXPLIQUER CETTE DEPENDANCE EN TEMPERATURE. NOUS METTONS EN EVIDENCE LE PHENOMENE DE MAGNETORESISTANCE GEANTE DANS DEUX NOUVEAUX SYSTEMES QUI SONT CO/CU ET FE/CU. DANS LE SYSTEME CO/CU, UNE MAGNETORESISTANCE DE L'ORDRE DE 50% EST OBSERVEE A TEMPERATURE AMBIANTE, PROMETTEUSE POUR LES APPLICATIONS. DE PLUS, NOUS AVONS OBSERVE DANS CO/CU ET FE/CU, DES OSCILLATIONS DU COUPLAGE D'ECHANGE A TRAVERS LE CUIVRE. CES OSCILLATIONS ONT UNE PERIODE VOISINE DE 12 A DANS LES DEUX SYSTEMES MAIS SONT EN OPPOSITION DE PHASE

Book excerpt: NOUS PRESENTONS UNE ETUDE DES PROPRIETES STRUCTURALES, MAGNETIQUES ET DE TRANSPORT ELECTRONIQUE DE MULTICOUCHES CO/CU ET NIFE/AG AINSI QUE D'ALLIAGES GRANULAIRES (COFE)AG.

Book excerpt: Advances in the synthesis of new materials with often complex, nano-scaled structures require increasingly sophisticated experimental techniques that can probe the electronic states, the atomic magnetic moments and the magnetic microstructures responsible for the properties of these materials. At the same time, progress in synchrotron radiation techniques has ensured that these light sources remain a key tool of investigation, e.g. synchrotron radiation sources of the third generation are able to support magnetic imaging on a sub-micrometer scale. With the Fifth Mittelwihr School on Magnetism and Synchrotron Radiation the tradition of teaching the state-of-the-art on modern research developments continues and is expressed through the present set of extensive lectures provided in this volume. While primarily aimed at postgraduate students and newcomers to the field, this volume will also benefit researchers and lecturers actively working in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the rapidly developing field of oxide thin-films and heterostructures. Oxide materials combined with atomic-scale precision in a heterostructure exhibit an abundance of macroscopic physical properties involving the strong coupling between the electronic, spin, and structural degrees of freedom, and the interplay between magnetism, ferroelectricity, and conductivity. Recent advances in thin-film deposition and characterization techniques made possible the experimental realization of such oxide heterostructures, promising novel functionalities and device concepts. The book consists of chapters on some of the key innovations in the field over recent years, including strongly correlated oxide heterostructures, magnetoelectric coupling and multiferroic materials, thermoelectric phenomena, and two-dimensional electron gases at oxide interfaces. The book covers the core principles, describes experimental approaches to fabricate and characterize oxide heterostructures, demonstrates new functional properties of these materials, and provides an overview of novel applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most women who die from cervical cancer, particularly in developing countries, are in the prime of their life. They may be raising children, caring for their family, and contributing to the social and economic life of their town or village. Their death is both a personal tragedy, and a sad and unnecessary loss to their family and their community. Unnecessary, because there is compelling evidence, as this Guide makes clear, that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. Unfortunately, the majority of women in developing countries still do not have access to cervical cancer prevention programmes. The consequence is that, often, cervical cancer is not detected until it is too late to be cured. An urgent effort is required if this situation is to be corrected. This Guide is intended to help those responsible for providing services aimed at reducing the burden posed by cervical cancer for women, communities and health systems. It focuses on the knowledge and skills needed by health care providers, at different levels of care.
