We study how spatial knowledge, graphical knowledge and geometric knowledge are taken into account and articulated in the teaching of space and geometry in compulsory schools, teaching resources (programs and textbooks) and current teacher training. We question how the semiotic dimension (language, gestures and signs) of geometric activity can be taken into account, and we identify the role of artefacts (digital or tangible) in the teaching and learning of geometry. This book brings together some fifteen contributions from Frenchspeaking researchers from different countries (France, Switzerland and Canada).

In parts of East Asia it has long existed on a large scale and it is now becoming increasingly evident in other parts of Asia and in Africa, Europe and North America. Pupils commonly receive fee-free education in public schools and then at the end of the day and/or during week-ends and vacations supplementary tutoring in the same subjects on a fee-paying basis.Supplementary private tutoring can have positive dimensions. It helps students to cover the curriculum, provides a structured occupation for pupils outside school hours, and provides incomes for the tutors. However, tutoring may also have negative dimensions. If left to market forces, tutoring is likely to maintain and increase social inequalities, and it can create excessive pressure for young people who have inadequate time for non-academic activities. Especially problematic are situations in which school teachers provide extra tutoring in exchange for fees from their regular pupils.This book begins by surveying the scale, nature and implications of the shadow education system in a range of settings. It then identifies possible government responses to the phenomenon and encourages a proactive approach to designing appropriate policies.

In this context, research on the teaching and learning of geometry will continue to be a key element on the research agendas of mathematics educators, as researchers continue to look for ways to enhance student learning and to understand student thinking and teachers’ decision making.

Notre recherche, fondée sur l'élaboration, l'expérimentation et l'évaluation d'une ingénierie de formation, met en évidence plusieurs grandes questions de la profession : installer la paix scolaire, exercer une vigilance didactique, dépasser la tension entre dévolution et institutionnalisation. Les modes de réponses apportés constituent des dimensions de l'activité du professeur des écoles. L'étude s'appuie sur de nombreuses observations de classes d'enseignants nouvellement nommées en ZEP et débouche sur des questions de formation. Plus généralement, les difficultés rencontrées par les débutants nous incitent en tant que formateurs et chercheurs à mieux cerner les différents types de savoirs de formation. Une réflexion sur ce que l'on pourrait qualifier de "didactique professionnelle" des enseignants du premier degré impose notamment l'explicitation d'une double transposition des résultats de recherche en didactique des mathématiques d'abord des chercheurs vers les formateurs, puis des formateurs vers les enseignants. Le thème de ce livre se situe dans la continuité de nos recherches en didactique des mathématiques, prolongeant la réflexion exposée dans le livre publié à La Pensée sauvage "Dur pour les élèves, Dur pour les enseignants, Dur d'enseigner en ZEP", M-L Peltier (Éditions) 2004. Nous avions mis en évidence que la prise en compte plus ou moins consciente par les professeurs des écoles de l'origine sociale de leurs élèves se traduisait par des adaptations de leur enseignement visant à motiver ces derniers et à les réconcilier avec les mathématiques. Elles s'accompagnaient souvent d'une simplification excessive des situations proposées, associée à une baisse des exigences ainsi qu'à une individualisation très importante des apprentissages. Ces constats nous ont conduits à poser la question de la formation et de l'évolution des pratiques des enseignants, notamment en ZEP ainsi que celle de leur enrichissement.

Book excerpt: In the late 1950s, like tens of thousands of young men of his generation, Pierre Bourdieu, having recently passed the agrégation in philosophy, found himself immersed in the Algerian war. Motivated by an impulse that, as he himself says, ‘was civic rather than political’, nothing seemed more important to him than to understand the Algerian situation and provide the elements that would enable others to come to an informed judgement about it. In extremely tough conditions and along with a small group of students, Bourdieu undertook a series of studies across an Algeria that was tightly patrolled by the army, leading him to discover the shocking reality of the resettlement camps and to analyse the mechanisms of destruction of Algerian society of which they were emblematic. To achieve the objectives he had set himself, Bourdieu had to carry out a genuine intellectual conversion, acquiring an ethnographic understanding of Algerian society, learning sociological analysis at a breakneck pace and inventing new instruments - both theoretical and empirical - that would enable him to understand the relations of domination specific to colonialism. These new tools also enabled him to analyse the nature of the crisis that the war had both produced and manifested. This unique volume brings together the first texts written by Bourdieu in the midst of the Algerian conflict, as well as later writings and interviews in which he returns to the topic of Algeria and the decisive role it played in the development of his work.
