Book excerpt: Les matériaux à Onde de Densité de Charge (ODC) ont été très étudiés durant les années 80 pour leurs propriétés de transport remarquables. Pourtant il reste plusieurs questions sans réponse. L'utilisation de nouvelles techniques expérimentales permet de répondre à certaines de ces questions. Après avoir présenté les principes de base de la Diffraction Cohérente des Rayons X (DCRX), nous montrons, en prenant comme exemple l'étude des boucles de dislocation dans le silicium, comment cette technique expérimentale permet de sonder les défauts de phase présents dans les cristaux.Nous poursuivons par des expériences sur les composés NbSe3 et K0.3MoO3 qui se trouvent être des systèmes canoniques pour l'étude des ODC. Nous montrons notamment grâce à la DCRX l'influence des défauts dans le glissement d'une ODC dans le composé NbSe3.Pour finir nous présentons des expériences sur la coexistence entre les ODC et onde de densité de spin dans le Chrome ainsi que la coexistence des ODC et de la supraconductivité dans le composé NbSe2. Ces expériences préliminaires laissent à penser que la supraconductivité augmente la cohérence de l'ODC et que la transition de spin flip, présente dans le Chrome, a des effets sur l'ODC.

Book excerpt: Le travail présenté dans ce manuscrit à pour fil conducteur l’utilisation de la diffraction cohérente des rayons X pour mettre en lumière différents phénomènes physiques. La détection de défauts topologiques, auxquels les faisceaux cohérents sont très sensibles, permet de tirer des conclusions sur l’ordre ou le désordre trouvés dans les systèmes étudiés. La notion de cohérence des rayons X est tout d’abord exposée, puis la caractérisation de profils de diffraction cohérente en présence de défauts topologiques est présentée à travers une étude des boucles de dislocation dans le silicium. Cette technique a ensuite été appliquée à l’étude de composés présentant des ordres électroniques incommensurables, tels que les Ondes de Densité de Charge (ODC) et les Ondes de Densité de Spin (ODS). Plusieurs systèmes ont été étudiés : le chrome pur monocristallin, le bronze bleu K0.3 MoO3 et NbSe3. Dans le cas du chrome, les résultats obtenus posent la question du lien réel existant entre ODC et ODS. Par ailleurs, une dislocation magnétique isolée en volume a été détectée et a permis de soulever la question des constantes de force de l’ODS du spin. Le bronze bleu et NbSe3 ont été étudiés sous champ électrique. Un ordre à très grande distance a été observé dans les ODC du bronze bleu et de NbSe3, dans le régime de glissement. Nous proposons une description en termes de phase, à l’aide d’un modèle de type réseau de solitons.

Book excerpt: La diffraction cohérente des rayons X est une technique relativement récente, qui permet de réaliser des mesures de dynamique de fluctuations dans la matière dure ou molle, ou de reconstruire les configurations de l'espace réel à l'aide d'algorithmes basés sur des calculs de transformée de Fourier. Nous montrons ici que cette technique peut ètre appliquée à l'étude de défauts de phase isolés tels que des dislocations et que ceux-ci peuvent ètre reconstruits sans algorithme. Il apparaît que la technique peut en principe surpasser en résolution la topograhie X, technique de choix pour les études de volume. Des boucles de dislocation du silicium ont ainsi été imagées. Nous montrons également que de réelles conclusions physiques peuvent ètre tirées, à travers l'étude de défauts de phase de structures électroniques dans des systèmes développant des ondes de densité de charge et de spin. Le chrome, le bronze bleu de molybdène K0.3MoO3 et NbSe3 font partie des systèmes étudiés dans ce travail. Un certain nombre de questions liées à la structure statique et dynamique de ces cristaux électroniques sont soulevées, et des modèles théoriques sont proposés.

Book excerpt: Le présent travail s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'étude des matériaux dotés de propriétés remarquables en optique non linéaire, et en particulier des matériaux utilisés pour le doublage de fréquence de radiations lasers. Nous nous sommes intéressés à deux de ces matériaux. Le premier, l'arséniate de potassium et de titanyl KTiOAsO4 (KTA) est isotype du phosphate de potassium et de titanyl KTiOPO4 (KTP), qui est une référence dans le domaine. Le second composé est le triborate de lithium LiB3O5 (LBO), présentant un intérêt particulier du fait de sa large fenêtre de transparence, permettant d'étendre le spectre des radiations utilisables. Le but de cette étude est de déterminer de manière précise la distribution de densité électronique de valence, à partir de mesures de diffraction aux rayons X à haute résolution, afin de mettre en évidence les systèmes d'électrons responsables des propriétés non linéaires de ces matériaux. Nous avons également réalisé une approche par calcul ab-initio d'un modèle du triborate de lithium LBO, nous permettant la comparaison des densités électroniques de déformation expérimentale et théorique. Dans cette approche, nous avons également mené une tentative de détermination des coefficients du tenseur de susceptibilité électrique du second ordre.

Book excerpt: Nanotechnologies rely on the introduction of strain engineering to enhance semiconductor devices performances. As a consequence, non-invasive characterization methods with high spatial resolution and strain sensitivity on low-amount-of-matter samples are required. This PhD work focuses on methodology of X-ray diffraction techniques performed in the Bragg geometry, which allows probing the structural properties of crystalline samples. Firstly, the Scanning X-ray Diffraction Microscopy technique, developed on a fast-timescale at the ESRF ID01 undulator beamline, is described through a thorough analysis of an experiment performed on ultra-thin strained SiGe-on-insulator patterns. Secondly, this manuscript focuses on two coherent diffraction imaging techniques, namely Bragg CDI, which yields complex density and strain map of nano-meso crystalline objects, and Ptychography, which use translational diversity to produce quantitative maps of complex transmission function of non-crystalline objects. The motivation developed in this PhD work is to combine these two techniques that both promote highly sensitive phase-contrast properties, in order to provide ultra-high resolution on complex/extended samples. Bragg Ptychography is thus introduced, along with algorithmic descriptions and considerations on the X-ray beam characterization, the latter being still a key component for successful reconstructions.

His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
