Book Synopsis Becoming Christian by : David G. Horrell
Download or read book Becoming Christian written by David G. Horrell and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first letter of Peter remains a relatively neglected corner of the New Testament: the number of monographs devoted to it is tiny, compared with those on the Gospels and Pauline letters. Yet it is a text - so this book argues - that offers much insight into crucial processes in the development of Christian identity. In particular, 1 Peter illustrates with particular clarity the complex ways in which Christian identity was forged from Jewish traditions and negotiated in the generally hostile Roman empire. As such, studies of this particular letter illuminate central themes in the making of Christianity in the earliest centuries. "Becoming Christian" is a collection of essays that treat various facets of the first letter of Peter, in its social and historical setting, in some cases using new social-scientific and postcolonial methods to shed light on the ways in which the letter contributes to the making of Christian identity. At the heart of the book are chapters 5-7, which examine the contribution of 1 Peter to the construction of Christian identity, the persecution and suffering of Christians in Asia Minor, the significance of the name 'Christian', and the response of the letter to the hostility encountered by Christians in society. There are no recent books which bring together such a wealth of information and analysis of this crucial early Christian text. "Becoming Christian" has developed out of Horrell's ongoing research for the International Critical Commentary on 1 Peter. Together these essays will offer a series of significant and original engagements with this letter, and a resource for studies of 1 Peter for some time to come.

Book Synopsis Mgr Ndongmo et la Question Bamiléké au Cameroun by : Andre Segue

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Being Pagan, Being Christian in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages by : Katja Ritari
Download or read book Being Pagan, Being Christian in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages written by Katja Ritari and published by Helsinki University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to identify oneself as pagan or Christian in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages? How are religious identities constructed, negotiated, and represented in oral and written discourse? How is identity performed in rituals, how is it visible in material remains? Antiquity and the Middle Ages are usually regarded as two separate fields of scholarship. However, the period between the fourth and tenth centuries remains a time of transformations in which the process of religious change and identity building reached beyond the chronological boundary and the Roman, the Christian and ‘the barbarian’ traditions were merged in multiple ways. Being Pagan, Being Christian in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages brings together researchers from various fields, including archaeology, history, classical studies, and theology, to enhance discussion of this period of change as one continuum across the artificial borders of the different scholarly disciplines. With new archaeological data and contributions from scholars specializing on both textual and material remains, these different fields of study shed light on how religious identities of the people of the past are defined and identified. The contributions reassess the interplay of diversity and homogenising tendencies in a shifting religious landscape. Beyond the diversity of traditions, this book highlights the growing capacity of Christianity to hold together, under its control, the different dimensions – identity, cultural, ethical and emotional – of individual and collective religious experience.
Book Synopsis Portuguese Style and Luso-African Identity by : Peter Mark
Download or read book Portuguese Style and Luso-African Identity written by Peter Mark and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002-12-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this detailed history of domestic architecture in West Africa, Peter Mark shows how building styles are closely associated with social status and ethnic identity. Mark documents the ways in which local architecture was transformed by long-distance trade and complex social and cultural interactions between local Africans, African traders from the interior, and the Portuguese explorers and traders who settled in the Senegambia region. What came to be known as "Portuguese" style symbolized the wealth and power of Luso-Africans, who identified themselves as "Portuguese" so they could be distinguished from their African neighbors. They were traders, spoke Creole, and practiced Christianity. But what did this mean? Drawing from travelers' accounts, maps, engravings, paintings, and photographs, Mark argues that both the style of "Portuguese" houses and the identity of those who lived in them were extremely fluid. "Portuguese" Style and Luso-African Identity sheds light on the dynamic relationship between identity formation, social change, and material culture in West Africa.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Nineteenth-Century Christian Thought by : Joel Rasmussen
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Nineteenth-Century Christian Thought written by Joel Rasmussen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through various realignments beginning in the Revolutionary era and continuing across the nineteenth century, Christianity not only endured as a vital intellectual tradition contributed importantly to a wide variety of significant conversations, movements, and social transformations across the diverse spheres of intellectual, cultural, and social history. The Oxford Handbook of Nineteenth-Century Christian Thought proposes new readings of the diverse sites and variegated role of the Christian intellectual tradition across what has come to be called 'the long nineteenth century'. It represents the first comprehensive examination of a picture emerging from the twin recognition of Christianity's abiding intellectual influence and its radical transformation and diversification under the influence of the forces of modernity. Part one investigates changing paradigms that determine the evolving approaches to religious matters during the nineteenth century, providing readers with a sense of the fundamental changes at the time. Section two considers human nature and the nature of religion. It explores a range of categories rising to prominence in the course of the nineteenth century, and influencing the way religion in general, and Christianity in particular, were conceived. Part three focuses on the intellectual, cultural, and social developments of the time, while part four looks at Christianity and the arts-a major area in which Christian ideas, stories, and images were used, adapted, changes, and challenged during the nineteenth century. Christianity was radically pluralized in the nineteenth century, and the fifth section is dedicated to 'Christianity and Christianities'. The chapters sketch the major churches and confessions during the period. The final part considers doctrinal themes registering the wealth and scope through broad narrative and individual example. This authoritative reference work offers an indispensible overview of a period whose forceful ideas continue to be present in contemporary theology.
Book Synopsis The Relevance of Newman in a "Post-Christian" World by : Keith Beaumont
Download or read book The Relevance of Newman in a "Post-Christian" World written by Keith Beaumont and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has Newman to say today, not just to Christians, but to those shapers of public opinion in education and the media for whom Christianity is no longer a point of reference, or to those for whom all religion is merely a matter of personal and subjective “opinion”? This is the central question of this volume. As it shows, Newman challenges us to think in an integrated way, “connecting” different areas of thought and experience. He invites us to reflect on the nature of the human “person” and the “self”, on the nature of conscience and its role in contemporary political life, and on the relationship between the individual and the community. The contributions here show that Newman challenges us to examine the relationships between different academic disciplines in the quest for a “connected view or grasp” of things. He invites us to see faith as not just a question of “believing”, but also as a quest for a personal, living relationship. His thought throws fresh light on the nature of inter-religious dialogue and contemporary evangelism.
Book Synopsis Autorité épiscopale et sollicitude pastorale (IIe-VIe siécles) by : Charles Munier
Download or read book Autorité épiscopale et sollicitude pastorale (IIe-VIe siécles) written by Charles Munier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first set of articles in this collection is concerned with the nature of the bishop’s authority in the Early Church and the sources from which it was drawn. This is seen in political terms, as in the writings of Justin Martyr, as well as spiritual ones. Charles Munier singles out Tertullian as the first to formulate a doctrine of apostolic succession, but also traces his subsequent path towards the affirmation of the authority of the Holy Spirit over that embodied in the ’Orthodox Church’. The following studies turn to a complementary area of ecclesiology, that of pastoral care. The author points to the great diversity of forms of worship and rite, from the earliest days of the Church; these, he argues, reflect a constant process of adaptation, to fit particular religious needs, and to understand such divergences it is necessary to investigate the theological motives that lay behind them. Particular topics here are those of baptism and marriage, especially the still controversial question of how and with what discretion to treat divorce and remarriage.
