Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaffee (government, Saint Mary's College) uses a theoretical approach to investigate the connection between politics and economics in Brazil. He offers statistics and detailed case studies of the country's regimes in support of his hypothesis that economic growth in Brazil leads to changes that support the governmental regime. Topics include the country's perpetually high inflation, the New Republic's strategy of growth based on import substitution, Jose Sarney's efforts to restructure politics with a new constitution, and the Real Plan. Book Synopsis The Social Life of Economic Inequalities in Contemporary Latin America by : Margit Ystanes
Download or read book The Social Life of Economic Inequalities in Contemporary Latin America written by Margit Ystanes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This edited volume examines how economic processes have worked upon social lives and social realities in Latin America during the past decades. Through tracing the effects of the neoliberal epoch into the era of the so-called pink tide, the book seeks to understand to what extent the turn to the left at the start of the millennium managed to challenge historically constituted configurations of inequality. A central argument in the book is that in spite of economic reforms and social advances on a range of arenas, the fundamental tenants of socio-economic inequalities have not been challenged substantially. As several countries are now experiencing a return to right-wing politics, this collection helps us better understand why inequalities are so entrenched in the Latin American continent, but also the complex and creative ways that it is continuously contested. The book directs itself to students, scholars and anyone interested in Latin America, economic anthropology, political anthropology, left-wing politics, poverty and socio-economic inequalities.

Book Synopsis Business-State Relations in Brazil by : Mahrukh Doctor
Download or read book Business-State Relations in Brazil written by Mahrukh Doctor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the spotlight of international attention on Brazil has often been in the area of logistics infrastructure—for example, on its capacity to deal with the high demand expected during the World Cup and the Olympics. However, neither competitiveness nor infrastructure concerns are new for Brazil. In the 1990s, Brazilian policy-makers adopted a series of liberalizing economic reforms that exposed the poor condition of logistics infrastructure and inadequate investment in Brazilian ports, roads, railways and airports. Over twenty years later, the implications of those reforms still colour Brazil’s prospects for development. Mahrukh Doctor’s book evaluates the political economy of reform in Brazil and the difficulty of implementing institutional modernization in the context of opposition from vested interests originating in the state and civil society. It focuses specifically on the Port Modernization Law, which aimed to augment the country's competitiveness by creating efficient and low cost ports. Based on primary research carried out over a period of twenty years using original qualitative data, Doctor’s analysis focuses on the difficulties in implementing this law and how those difficulties are symptomatic of the wider issues associated with lack of sufficient investment in infrastructure in Brazil. Using the case of the business lobby for port reform, the book examines the evolving nature of business-state relations and the process of institutional change in Brazil. Doctor particularly examines the building of consensus for reform and policy formulation in the port sector and the challenges of reform implementation and institutional modernisation. The analysis provides extensive insights and lessons related to the prospects for boosting competitiveness of Brazilian ports. The book concludes by suggesting a likely path for the evolution of corporatist institutions as well as the provision of adequate logistics infrastructure to support business success in Brazil. A unique work on the subject of port reform in Latin America that uses a hybrid analytical framework to understand reform in Brazil, this book is pertinent for a variety of subjects from Latin American Studies to political economy to economic-policy making.
Book Synopsis Macroeconomic Crises, Policies, and Growth in Brazil, 1964-90 by : Donald V. Coes
Download or read book Macroeconomic Crises, Policies, and Growth in Brazil, 1964-90 written by Donald V. Coes and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Technical Paper No. 269. Water problems are emerging as the most compelling set of issues facing agricultural production in the 1990s. To address the policy challenges posed by this dilemma, this study focuses on the experience of the European Community (now the European Union, or EU) where high levels of nitrate, phosphate, and pesticides in surface and groundwater are a source of increasing concern. The author examines agricultural and water quality-related environmental policies at the EU and national levels, and discusses new policy approaches that attempt to integrate agricultural and environmental considerations. This study thus provides insights into policy options for controlling agricultural water pollution that might be useful in other parts of the world.
