Book Synopsis Children, Spaces and Identity by : Margarita Sánchez Romero
Download or read book Children, Spaces and Identity written by Margarita Sánchez Romero and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do children construct, negotiate and organize space? The study of social space in any human group is fraught with limitations, and to these we must add the further limits involved in the study of childhood. Here specialists from archaeology, history, literature, architecture, didactics, museology and anthropology build a body of theoretical and methodological approaches about how space is articulated and organized around children and how this disposition affects the creation and maintenance of social identities. Children are considered as the main actors in historic dynamics of social change, from prehistory to the present day. Notions on space, childhood and the construction of both the individual and the group identity of children are considered as a prelude to papers that focus on analyzing and identifying the spaces which contribute to the construction of children’s identity during their lives: the places they live, learn, socialize and play. A final section deals with these same aspects, but focuses on funerary contexts, in which children may lose their capacity to influence events, as it is adults who establish burial strategies and practices. In each case authors ask questions such as: how do adults construct spaces for children? How do children manage their own spaces? How do people (adults and children) build (invisible and/or physical) boundaries and spaces?

Book Synopsis Minting, State, and Economy in the Visigothic Kingdom by : Andrew Kurt
Download or read book Minting, State, and Economy in the Visigothic Kingdom written by Andrew Kurt and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the Visigothic kingdom's monetary system in southern Gaul and Hispania from the fifth century through the Muslim invasion of Spain fills a major gap in the scholarship of late antiquity. Examining all aspects of the making of currency, it sets minting in relation to questions of state - monarchical power, administration and apparatus, motives for money production - and economy. In the context of the later Roman Empire and its successor states in the West, the minting and currency of the Visigoths reveal shared patterns as well as originality. The analysis brings both economic life and the needs of the state into sharper focus, with significant implications for the study of an essential element in daily life and government. This study combines an appreciation for the surprising level of sophistication in the Visigothic minting system with an accessible approach to a subject which can seem complex and abstruse.
Book Synopsis The Conspiracy of the Ninth Duke of Medina Sidonia (1641) by : Luis Salas Almela
Download or read book The Conspiracy of the Ninth Duke of Medina Sidonia (1641) written by Luis Salas Almela and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Conspiracy of the Ninth Duke of Medina Sidonia, Luis Salas offers a penetrating analysis of a plot to incite rebellion in the region of Andalusia in 1641. Had it succeeded, the plan could have caused the collapse of the Spanish Monarchy. Salas leaves no doubt that the conspiracy indeed occurred; he analyzes the plan in depth, its architects, its supporters — both in Andalusia and abroad — how it unraveled, and how the government of Philip IV of Spain managed to survive the most dramatic months of his tumultuous reign. Salas also delves into the consequences of the subsequent punishments, which affected Portugal, the balance of power in Andalusia, and Spain’s entire colonial trade.
