Book Synopsis Estrogens and Antiestrogens II by : Michael Oettel
Download or read book Estrogens and Antiestrogens II written by Michael Oettel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, Springer has been publishing an impressive series of textbooks of pharmacology which have set standards in medical science. Surprisingly, an extensive overview of the current state of the art in research on estrogens and anti estrogens was still lacking. The present two volumes on estrogens and anti estrogens provide a comprehensive review of a field of research in which remarkable progress has been made over the past few years. New insights into the mechanisms of steroid hormone action resulted in a tremendous number of pUblications from which new principles of preventive and therapeutic appli cations of estrogens and anti estrogens emerged. Although various electronic data bases provide easy access to this copious information, there was a clear necessity for a monograph-style textbook which assesses and summarizes current knowledge in this rapidly expanding field of research. It should be noted, however, that, due to this dynamic development, it is barely possible to comprehensively update every aspect of basic and clinical knowledge on estro gens and antiestrogens. Thus, the intention of the editors was to provide the reader with an overview of the "classic" and most recently explored areas of research and stimulate future interests in basic and applied endocrinology. Estrogens were among the first steroid hormones described in the scientific literature. Since they were first isolated, since the chemical, synthesic and pharmacological characterization of naturally occurring estrogens and, later on, of orally active derivatives, estrogen research has produced continu ously hallmark results in reproductive endocrinology worldwide.

Book Synopsis Estrogens, Progestins, and Their Antagonists by : Edward J. Pavlik
Download or read book Estrogens, Progestins, and Their Antagonists written by Edward J. Pavlik and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes on Estrogens, Progestins, and Their Antagonists repre sent a thematic extension of the series, Hormones in Health and Disease. The first publication in the series, Steroid Hormone Receptors: Basic and Clinical Aspects, focused on recent advances in the anatomy of steroid receptors and members of the steroid receptor superfamily. Consistent with the spirit of the series, the authors addressed issues of clinical significance of steroid receptor detection in hormone-related disorders. The second volume in the series, Hormones and Cancer, attempted a more direct examination of ac tions of hormones in cancerous tissues and cells. In these two volumes, which together form the third in the series, the editor, Dr. Edward Pavlik, has introduced a team of leading investigators engaged in research on various aspects of the steroids that regulate female reproductive physiology. Estrogens and progestins, the main components of the most widely used contraceptive pills, have found a variety of uses in clinical endocrinology. These volumes contain discussions that range from the introduction of novel hormonal ligands to "hormonal antagonism by steroid analogs. A balanced treatment is provided of applications of the steroids in treatment and management of hormone-dependent conditions and malignancies. The remarkable synthesis of literature contained in this volume will provide a reader with both the fundamental concepts underly ing steroid hormone physiology and the clinical applications of observations made on basic aspects of hormone action. I congratulate the editorial leadership of Dr.

Book Synopsis Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs by : Carmen Avendaño
Download or read book Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs written by Carmen Avendaño and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs, Second Edition, provides an updated treatment from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and drug design, focusing on the mechanism of action of antitumor drugs from the molecular level, and on the relationship between chemical structure and chemical and biochemical reactivity of antitumor agents. Antitumor chemotherapy is a very active field of research, and a huge amount of information on the topic is generated every year. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is gradually being supplemented by a new generation of drugs that recognize specific targets on the surface or inside cancer cells, and resistance to antitumor drugs continues to be investigated. While these therapies are in their infancy, they hold promise of more effective therapies with fewer side effects. Although many books are available that deal with clinical aspects of cancer chemotherapy, this book provides a sorely needed update from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and drug design. - Presents information in a clear and concise way using a large number of figures - Historical background provides insights on how the process of drug discovery in the anticancer field has evolved - Extensive references to primary literature
Book Synopsis Hormonally Active Agents in the Environment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Hormonally Active Agents in the Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-03 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some investigators have hypothesized that estrogens and other hormonally active agents found in the environment might be involved in breast cancer increases and sperm count declines in humans as well as deformities and reproductive problems seen in wildlife. This book looks in detail at the science behind the ominous prospect of "estrogen mimics" threatening health and well-being, from the level of ecosystems and populations to individual people and animals. The committee identifies research needs and offers specific recommendations to decision-makers. This authoritative volume: Critically evaluates the literature on hormonally active agents in the environment and identifies known and suspected toxicologic mechanisms and effects of fish, wildlife, and humans. Examines whether and how exposure to hormonally active agents occursâ€"in diet, in pharmaceuticals, from industrial releases into the environmentâ€"and why the debate centers on estrogens. Identifies significant uncertainties, limitations of knowledge, and weaknesses in the scientific literature. The book presents a wealth of information and investigates a wide range of examples across the spectrum of life that might be related to these agents.
Book Synopsis New Molecular Mechanisms of Estrogen Action and Their Impact on Future Perspectives in Estrogen Therapy by : Kenneth S. Korach
Download or read book New Molecular Mechanisms of Estrogen Action and Their Impact on Future Perspectives in Estrogen Therapy written by Kenneth S. Korach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-06-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From our current knowledge, it is obvious that estrogen action in volves more than reproduction and fertility. Rather, estrogens affect and influence a number of other organ systems such as the immune, cardiovascular and central nervous system as well as the gastrointes tinal tract, urinary tract and skeleton. The importance of estrogens and estrogen receptor activity is appreciated from the spectrum of significant physiological dysfunctions that occur when there is a loss The participants of the workshop VI Preface of the hormone or the receptor activity. Loss of estrogen, however (for instance during menopause), occurs with time and results in a variety of clinical conditions. We know that the developmental loss of estrogen, as seen in clinical cases of aromatase gene mutations and experimental models, has dramatic effects in both men and women alike. The evidence that these effects are mediated through the estrogen receptor(s) is based on similar but not always identical phenotypes as observed in experimental animal models of estrogen receptor mutations as well as the single clinical case of an estrogen receptor alpha mutant patient. Developing an understanding of the spectrum of estrogen in a variety of tissues related to the condition of estrogen loss is a major and highly active clinical as well as basic scientific research area. Following the discovery of a second estrogen receptor and possible receptor ligand-independent activity as well as the genomic and non genomic actions of estrogen, it is clear that the mechanisms of the effects of estrogen are multifaceted.
