Book Synopsis Tissue Culture of Epithelial Cells by : Mary Taub
Download or read book Tissue Culture of Epithelial Cells written by Mary Taub and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epithelial cells are present in many different tissues in the body, and possess a diverse number of functional properties. However, all epithelial cells share some common characteristics. The cells possess a morphological polarity (an-apical and basolateral surface), and are interconnected by tight junctions. The epithelial cells also possess the capacity to transport select solutes across the monolayer. Transport systems localized on either the apical or basolateral surface are respon sible for this vectorial transport. Such characteristics of epithelial cells can be examined in the tissue culture situation. This volume discusses the use of cell culture techniques to study these fundamental properties of epithelial cells. Ma jor questions concerning epithelia which may be examined in culture are ad dressed. The approaches which are taken to answer these questions are described in detail with regards to kidney cell cultures. Similar investigations may be done with epithelial cell cultures derived from other tissues, following the kidney cell culture paradigm.

Book excerpt: The International Foundation for Biochemical Endocrinology is incorporated as a nonprofit research and educational organization. It is dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge, cooperative research programs, and cultural interaction on an international basis. The Foundation is concerned with both basic research and practical applications of biological knowledge to the betterment of humanity. Among our interests are global resource management, human reproduction, hormonal regulation of normal and cancer cells, study of aging and degenerative diseases, brain peptides, peptide neurotransmitter compounds, mechanism of action of hormones, peptide hormone synthesis, and recombinant DNA techniques. This monograph is the ninth sponsored by the Foundation in the Biochemical Endocrinology series. The previous four have been: Hormonally Active Brain Peptides: Structure and Function (1982), K. W. McKerns and V. Pantie, eds.; Reproductive Processes and Contraception (1981), K. W. McKerns, ed.; Synthesis and Release of Adenohypophyseal Hormones (1980), M. Jutisz and K. W. McKerns, eds.; and Structure and Function of the Gonadotropins (1978), K. W. McKerns, ed. These have all been published by Plenum Press.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented in the NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Activation of Hormone and Growth Factor Receptors: Molecular Mechanisms and Consequences" held in Nafplion, Greece on September 25-30, 1988. The objective of NATO ARW is to assess the state of-the-art in a given scientific area and to formulate recommendations for future research in emerging areas of science by promoting international scientific contacts. In the Nafplion meeting this objective was reached by an international group of speakers, senior Greek scientists and graduates involved in relevant research areas. The Workshop was made possible by the generous support of the Scientific Council of NATO. We thank Drs. G. Sinclair and L.V. daCunha, Directors of the NATO ARW's and ASI's (Advanced Study Institutes) respectively, for their wholehearted support and advice. The International Union of Biochemistry awarded additional travel grants leading to increased international participation. Furthermore, the Secretariat of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Culture and Sciences and the National Hellenic Research Foundation contributed financially and by supporting personnel. We sincerely thank all these organizations for their support. Our heartful thanks are also extended to the Mayor of the Municipality of Nafplion, Mr.
Book Synopsis Endocrine Therapy of Breast Cancer by : Franco Cavalli

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in 1986, the European School of Oncology has expanded its activities in postgraduate teaching, which consisted mainly of traditional disease-orientated courses, by promoting new educational initiatives. One of these is the cloister seminars, short meetings intended for highly qualified oncologists and dealing with specific, controversial aspects of clinical practice and research. Another is the institution of permanent study groups, also called task forces, where a limited number of leading experts are invited to meet once a year with the aim of defining the state of the art and possibly reaching a consensus on developments and treatment in specific fields of oncology. This series of ESO Monographs was designed with the specific purpose of disseminating the results of the most interesting of the seminars and study groups, and providing concise and updated reviews of the subjects discussed. It was decided to keep the layout very simple in order to keep costs to a minimum and make the monographs available in the shortest possible time, thus overcoming a common problem in medical literature: that of the material being outdated even before publication.
