Book excerpt: Different field and laboratory methods for determining the hydraulic properties of unsaturated soils were studied. Drying moisture retention curves were measured on undisturbed soil samples with a pressure plate apparatus, and wetting soil moisture retention curves were measured on repacked soil columns via a capillary rise experiment Saturated hydraulic conductivities were measured in-situ with a Guelph permeameter, and in the laboratory with falling head tests. Finally, an inverse modeling technique was used to analyze transient flow data from in-situ cone permeameter and laboratory multi-step outflow experiments to simultaneously obtain wetting and drying curves for both the moisture retention and the hydraulic conductivity functions. The retention curves obtained from analysis of the cone permeameter data were consistent with results of the multi-step outflow tests and bounded by the capillary and pressure plate test results, as expected. The retention curves derived from cone permeameter data exhibited more curvature than those obtained from the other methods. The curves obtained from multi-step outflow tests exhibited less hysteresis than those derived from cone permeameter tests and were more repeatable than the pressure plate test results.

Book excerpt: Unsaturated flow through porous media has gained a lot of attention in recent decades in many fields of agriculture and hydrology. Examples are many, of which are deficit irrigation and contaminants transport. Several models simulating unsaturated flow processes require as input the diffusivity -water content relation (D-0) and/or the hydraulic conductivity-water content relation (K-0). Several techniques for measuring or predicting these relations were developed throughout the literature. Most of these techniques involve either analytical and quasi-analytical solutions of the governing non-linear partial differential equation, or laboratory experiments, which are both expensive and time consuming. In this research, an experimental model was developed based on the field capacity concept and requires only measurements of the wetting depth with time. The laboratory setup is simple and inexpensive, consisting of uniformly packed soil columns. Three replicates of three different soil textures were used. Water was added to the columns and measurements of the wetting depths were taken after infiltration has virtually ceased; these measurements were then used to get the D-0 relation. With the aid of the soil moisture characteristic curves developed by the pressure plate method, the K-0 relation was determined. Results produced by this model showed trends that were in good agreement with some empirical relations in the literature, especially for fine textured soils. The best fitted relations for clay and sandy clay loam soils were of the power function and the exponential function types. For coarse textured soils (sand) the data were scattered and the developed model was not valid, - this was due to neglecting the gravity term in the model. The values of the fitted experimental parameters were too high as compared with those in the literature.

The direct determination of those properties in the field or laboratory is tedious, time-consuming, and involves considerable uncertainty for most prac tical applications. Recently, inverse modeling has been introduced to estimate s oil hydraulic properties, using transient flow information of measured time seri es. Inverse methods combine forward soil water flow models with optimization alg orithms to find the best parameter set that minimizes an objective function. Ass uming a linear hydraulic conductivity - moisture content k(theta) relationship a nd an exponential hydraulic conductivity - water pressure k(h) model, the parame ter identification problem is solved with reasonable accuracy and simplicity, th rough the analysis of multistep outflow data. Unsaturated hydraulic properties o f a hypothetical soil are first evaluated by a nonlinear inversion method minimi zing various objective functions, to identify the information content of data re quired for the proper determination of soil hydraulic parameters. Multistep expe riments are then simulated on three soils with different texture characteristics via Hydrus-1D software, to explore the applicability and limitations of applyin g the proposed parameter estimation technique to various soil types. Finally, tr ansient flow data from an actual multistep experiment with inherent measurement errors is used, whereby the proposed optimization method is used along with the Hydrus-1D numerical code to inversely estimate the unsaturated soil hydraulic pr operties. The proposed method does not require a numerical solution of the flow problem, and when tested against numerical and experimental outflow data gives v ery satisfactory results.

Book excerpt: In recent decades the development of unsaturated soil mechanics has been remarkable, resulting in momentous advances in fundamental knowledge, testing techniques, computational procedures, prediction methodologies and geotechnical practice. The advances have spanned the full spectrum of theory and practice. In addition, unsaturated materials exhibiting complex behaviour such as residual soils, swelling soils, compacted soils, collapsing soils, tropical soils and solid wastes have been integrated in a common understanding of shared behaviour features. It is also noteworthy that unsaturated soil mechanics has proved surprisingly fruitful in expanding to other neighbouring areas such as swelling rocks, rockfill mechanics, and freezing soils. As a consequence, geotechnical engineering involving unsaturated soils can be now approached from a more rational and systematic perspective leading towards an improved and more effective practice. Unsaturated Soils contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Unsaturated Soil (Barcelona, Spain, 6-8 September 2010). They report significant advances in the areas of unsaturated soil behaviour, testing techniques, constitutive and numerical modelling and applications. The areas of application include soil-atmosphere interaction, foundations, slopes, embankments, pavements, geoenviromental problems and emerging topics. They are complemented by three keynote lectures and three general reports covering general issues of modelling, testing and applications. Unsaturated Soils is a comprehensive record of the state-of-the art in unsaturated soil mechanics and a sound basis for further progress in the future. The two volumes will serve as an essential reference for academics, researchers and practitioners interested in unsaturated soils.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The testing of unsaturated soils requires greater care and effort than that of saturated soils. Although unsaturated soil mechanics has been embraced by geotechnical engineering, engineering practice has not yet caught up as the characterization of unsaturated soils is difficult and time-consuming, and made harder still by a lack of standards. Laboratory Tests for Unsaturated Soils collates test procedures to cover all laboratory tests for characterising unsaturated soils. It covers the background, theory, test procedures, and interpretation of test results. Each test procedure is broken down into simple stages and described in detail. The pitfalls of each test and the interpretation of the test results are explained. Test data and calculation methods are given, along with many numerical examples to illustrate the methods of interpretation and to offer the presentation of typical results. The book is especially useful for students and researchers who are new to the field and provides a practical handbook for engineering applications.

Book excerpt: Flow analysis in partially saturated soils requires the determination of soil hydraulic properties: its characteristic curve, q(y), and its permeability curve k(y). The instabilization of slopes, often associated with suction variations, and the transport of contaminants, wherethe source of contaminants is often above water leve, are some of the geotechnical problems involving flows in partially saturated media. The main objective of this work is the numerical implementation of a program, based on finite element coding, for the back analysis of flow parameters in partially saturated soils, based on field experiments, capable of providing information on the quality of the estimates obtained. The back analysis method used here allows the simultaneous determination of the characteristic and permeability curves from transient flow data. The program was used to determine flow parameters of a field experiment conducted in Experimental Field II (PUC-Rio). A simpler configuration test is proposed based on theanalysis of the results obtained in this field experiment and on a sensitivity analysis. This test may provide satisfactory results in the determination of hydraulic properties of partially saturated soils.

It has an interdisciplinary character, utilising principles from biology, chemistry, biochemistry and physics to neutralize pollutants in all facets of the environment. Environmental engineering deals with a wide range of technical and technological problems, including the design and maintenance of water supply, sewage disposal, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning in buildings. This proceedings aims to assess the state of scientific research in various areas of environmental engineering; to evaluate organizational, technical and technological progress in contributing to ecological security; and to determine the place of environmental engineering in sustainable development, taking into account current political and economic conditions. Environmental Engineering is an invaluable source of information and ideas for the international environment engineering scientific community.
