Many organisms are highly variable across both of these scales, thereby violating assumptions of conventional abundance estimation methods. Larval walleye in the Maumee River are extremely variable; however estimates of abundance and mortality are important in understanding anthropogenic impacts on this spawning group and their role in Lake Erie walleye recruitment. Bayesian hierarchical models were used to quantify spatial and temporal variability, and estimate abundance and mortality within the river while accounting for spatial and temporal uncertainty. We sampled larval walleye at the river mouth and in the intake canal of a water-cooled power plant in 2010 and at an additional upstream site near the spawning grounds in 2011. Temporal variability and uncertainty was greater than spatial variability at all sites and years during the study. Daily abundance at each site and year was related to patterns in river discharge and temperature. Larval walleye abundance decreased in a downstream fashion, with an estimated annual natural mortality rate of 63.7% in 2011. Downstream (B) and power plant abundance (C) varied between years leading to a decrease in power plant entrainment mortality from 2010 to 2011, 11.1 to 2.8% respectively. Total in-river mortality was estimated at 64.8% when entrainment mortality was included. Quantifying sources of variability lead to an adjustment in sampling protocol, which increased precision in estimated values. Bayesian hierarchical models provided an optimal framework for understanding sources of variability and estimating larval fish abundance and mortality in this large river system.

Results of this study indicated that overall average fishing mortality for Florida bass in central Florida is relatively low, but much higher fishing mortality at Lake Santa Fe. Additionally, this study found simulated seasonal fluctuations in mortality could bias fishing mortality estimates derived from annual tag-return information. This was especially true for scenarios that simulated relatively high natural mortality rates. Thus, there is a need to evaluate fishing mortality at multiple spatial and temporal scales. For some fisheries this may be easy, as mortality rates remain relatively constant over time, but others may be more difficult. Thus, I suggest a two-tiered approach with 1) periodic (e.g., 5-10 year intervals) estimation of regional fishing mortality across lakes, and 2) site-specific estimates of mortality components when fishing mortality is suspected to be high, or when evaluating management regulations.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Dam removal is becoming an increasingly popular tool for river restoration throughout the United States. One of the most controversial dam removal proposals in the Lake Erie Watershed involves the Ballville Dam on the Sandusky River (Ohio). The Sandusky River is one of the major spawning tributaries for Lake Erie walleye (Sander vitreus). However, the dam located at river kilometer 29, blocks the fish from reaching upstream gravel beds and forces them to spawn below the Ballville Dam. It has been suggested that removing the dam will increase walleye reproductive success and thus the returning spawning population. This work is divided into two separate studies that focus on different aspects of the impacts the Ballville Dam has on the walleye population in the Sandusky River. An existing ecological model of walleye spawning and early life history stages in the Sandusky River is validated using in-situ egg deposition and larval drift data collected during the 2003 and 2004 spawning seasons. The results indicate that the model results agree with field observations for a spawning population of 2000 to 5000 females. However, this number of females is insufficient to saturate the below-dam spawning grounds, and therefore no increase in egg deposition or larval production is noted for without-dam simulations. A GIS-based habitat suitability model of an area of the currently available spawning grounds in the Sandusky River was also created and validated. The model was able to give a reasonable indication of habitat suitability dynamics in the current spawning grounds. However, there was difficulty resolving velocities in complex areas of the channel. The results indicate that floods with discharges exceeding 100 m3/s can reduce the area of suitable habitat to almost zero. Reproductive success in a given year may therefore rely heavily on the length of the spawning season and the discharge patterns. The results of the two models offer new insight into the removal of the Ballville Dam. However, coupling the two systems (an ecological model and a high resolution habitat suitability model) would give the most complete assessment of the potential impacts of the removal of the Ballville Dam on the walleye population in the Sandusky River.

Genetically distinct walleye populations appear to have developed their own adaptation strategies to respond to their regional climatic conditions. Walleye early growth rate showed a significant latitudinal trend: the populations at low latitudes, experiencing high thermal input, had a high early growth rate (o) and a high value for k, the rate of approaching asymptotic length (Linfinity) as defined in the von Bertalanffy growth model. However, the impact of climatic conditions on walleye growth in later life, as characterized by L infinity was not significant. In Lake Erie, three walleye sub-populations (i.e. the western basin, Van Buren Bay, and Grand River) showed distinct demographic characteristics. The western basin walleye had a lower early growth rate than the eastern basin walleye. The differences in early growth rate among these walleye subpopulations were associated with the differences in thermal regimes experienced by each sub-population during the growing season. The overheated western basin provided the worst growth habitat for walleye during summer/fall. Younger fish cannot avoid these overheated conditions and thus may be exhibiting reduced growth rates because of the unsuitable growth habitat in the western basin. The survival rates of adult walleye in the eastern basin were higher than the lakewide average, but the abundance was less than one percent of the lakewide adult walleye abundance. The warmer and clearer water conditions in 1998 created more walleye habitat than in 1993. The increases in water temperature and decreases in water level that may result from climate change will have different impacts on the habitat suitable for walleye among the three basins, with the greatest effect in the western basin. A simulation study showed that density-dependent early survival and density-dependent adult growth and egg production significantly affect the dynamics of the walleye metapopulation in Lake Erie. Walleye early survival (i.e. recruitment) could be a bottleneck, setting the overall sizes of the western basin and eastern basin sub-populations. This bottleneck would be sensitive to the changes in habitat expected from climate change.

Book excerpt: The Peterson mark/recapture method and the q_abg gill net selectivity model were used to estimate walleye population size, number of mature walleye, spawning stock biomass (SSB) and the relationship between SSB and density of walleye wild fry in Lake Plantaganette, Minnesota, from 2007 to 2009. A combination of trap netting, gill netting, and electrofishing was used to capture adult walleye which were double tagged with individually numbered yellow Floy tags for mark and recapture. Oxytetracycline (OTC) marked walleye fry were stocked in May 2007 and 2008 and recaptured by seining and electrofishing to compare wild fry to stocked fry density. The greatest concentration (nearly half) of spawning walleye was found at the river outlet. Anglers reported tagged walleye in connected waters as far away as Lake Bemidji, indicating that some walleye may be migrating from downstream to Lake Plantaganette to spawn. The results of this study show that SSB can be determined from simple gill net assessments. Overall, the Peterson mark/recapture method and the q_abg model were successful in showing that walleye SSB is less than optimal within Lake Plantaganette, indicating the need for supplemental fry stocking. Further studies should be performed on a regional scale from Lake Plantaganette to Stump Lake (creating a closed system) to determine the contribution that SSB and recruitment from one lake may have on another.

Book excerpt: The dynamics of fish populations are determined by demographic processes such as growth, survival, mortality, and movement that are influenced directly and indirectly by a suite of biotic and abiotic factors. Human-induced environmental change (e.g., climate change, nutrient pollution) is altering these processes, influencing the ability of ecosystems to support their resident populations, as well as the valuable ecosystem services they provide. The impacts of human-induced environmental change are often negative, can occur at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, and can vary with ontogeny. Therefore, understanding the historical and anticipated effects of environmental change on the dynamics of fish populations is critical to maintaining them, including the valued services and fisheries that they support. My research has sought to better understand the factors that influence population-level responses of exploited fish populations to changing environmental conditions, and to anticipate what these responses may look like amidst future change. To help achieve this research goal, my collaborators and I developed and applied numerous quantitative approaches to economically and ecologically important Lake Erie fish populations. Specifically, we forecasted the recruitment dynamics of several fish populations (walleye Sander vitreus, yellow perch Perca flavescens, and white perch Morone americana) under future climate change scenarios (Chapter 2), investigated historical changes in walleye recruitment dynamics in response to environmental factors (Chapter 3), anticipated how environmental change might alter early-life growth and survival of walleye via changes in larval stage duration (Chapter 4), and identified the role of demographic and environmental factors on the spatial patterning of walleye recreational harvest rates in Lake Erie (Chapter 5). These studies demonstrate that the dynamics of Lake Erie’s fish populations have changed in the past, and that environmental change is likely to continue to alter the dynamics of Lake Erie’s fish populations in the future. In Chapter 2, our modeling showed that walleye and yellow perch recruitment were forecasted to decline under future climate change, owing to shorter and warmer winters. For yellow perch, these declines were projected to be exacerbated by the implementation of agricultural conservation practices that reduce nutrient inputs into the west basin of Lake Erie. By contrast, recruitment of invasive white perch was projected to remain stable or increase relative to the past. In Chapter 3, my colleagues and I developed a modeling framework to build more informative environment-recruitment models. By applying this framework to the Lake Erie walleye population, we determined that the timing and importance of environmental factors previously associated with walleye recruitment (e.g., winter severity, spring warming rate, river discharge) have likely changed in the recent past. In Chapter 4, we linked output from a physical model to a bioenergetics model to show that walleye larval stage duration has likely changed in the recent past, with significant differences in direction and magnitude among Lake Erie’s three basins. Using historical environmental variability, we anticipated how future climate change might affect early-life growth and survival. Finally, in Chapter 5, my colleagues and I demonstrated that the relationships between temperature and walleye population size and recreational harvest rates vary spatially, and we anticipated how future ecosystem change could necessitate changes to the management of walleye in Lake Erie, owing to this spatial dependency. Collectively, the results of my research have helped to understand how Lake Erie’s fish populations respond to environmental change, to the benefit of fisheries management.

Book excerpt: Growth estimations and age frequencies of walleyes (Sander vitreus) were compared using scales and otoliths as the aging structures from Bull Shoals Lake, Missouri and Norfork Lake, Arkansas and Missouri. Aging structures were collected from fish sampled by electro-fishing during the spring of 2008. Each age structure was independently examined by three people without prior knowledge of the fish age, length, weight, gender, or site. Age distributions and growth models were obtained based on scale and otolith age data. Comparisons were made between distributions obtained using each aging structure and between lakes. It was found that scales consistently underestimate the age of fish from both lakes, assuming that otolith age data was accurate. The oldest fish age by scales from both lakes was 6 years, while the oldest fish age using otoliths was 11 years. Growth rates were compared to determine differences between aging structures and lake populations. Power growth models were created to compare growth between Lake Norfork and Bull Shoals Lake. It was found there were significantly different slopes and intercepts, for power growth models using scales and otoliths. Von Bertalanffy growth curves were created to compare growth rates between Lake Norfork and Bull Shoals Lake. Using otoliths as the aging structure it was found that growth rates in Bull Shoals Lake were slightly higher than Lake Norfork.

Given these sample size requirements determined for abundance estimation, the Darroch method was used to estimate movement parameters between two regions, the northwest (NW) and southeast (SE) EBS in a simple compartment model. Directed movement could be reasonably estimated with Monte Carlo simulation. To develop the EBS walleye pollock age-structured movement model, the standard stock assessment model was extended into a two-region (NW and SE EBS), two-season, age-specific movement model. Movement could be estimated from disaggregated data without mark-recapture information, but with low precision.
