Book excerpt: The BP Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, situated about 50 miles off the coast of southern Louisiana, exploded on April 20, 2010, resulting in 11 deaths, 17 injuries, and one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. In response, the Secretary of the Interior exercised his authority to suspend certain deepwater drilling activities. Given uncertainty about the adequacy of existing safety regulations, the moratorium provided time to determine whether and how deepwater drilling could continue in a safe and environmentally-sound manner. The moratorium was in effect until November 30, 2010. This report estimates the economic consequences of this moratorium in the 5 Gulf Coast states. Illustrations. This is a print on demand report.

Book Synopsis Change You Can Really Believe in by : Joseph Toomey
Download or read book Change You Can Really Believe in written by Joseph Toomey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No President in living memory has entered office with a greater amount of goodwill and broad, bi-partisan support than Barack Obama. And few Presidents in living memory had arrived in Washington proclaiming such dramatically articulated vows to change the tone of politics, to usher in an era of post-partisanship in an effort to rally the nation behind his plan of enacting an ambitious program of social and economic change. He vowed to enact a broad bi-partisan agenda for health care reform, energy transformation, economic revitalization, job growth and restoration of America's standing in the world. And no President in living memory has more quickly and more completely abandoned his promises. He enacted a health care plan that far more resembled plans he had bitterly criticized his opponents for supporting rather than the one his campaign outlined His promised job growth through economic stimulus measures drove up the unemployment rate to double digits leading to millions of job losses His vows to restore fiscal probity resulted in the most ruinous deficits and public debt in U.S. history He 'green energy' program collapsed into a cesspool of crony political favoritism His vows to restore relations with hostile nations like Iran and North Korea had only deepened those nations' disdain for America Despite his harsh criticisms, Obama adopted nearly every plank in the Bush-era anti-terror policy His promise to restore science to its rightful place resulted in the most rigidly inflexible program of ideological extremism in modern memory Even more noteworthy was the fact that the new era of post-partisanship he had vowed to create in Washington resulted in the worst political gridlock in living memory. This book examines in detail hundreds of campaign promises Obama made while running for President, contrasting those with the record of failure and broken promises left in his wake. It is a story that has received too little attention - until now."
Book Synopsis Cultures of Energy by : Sarah Strauss
Download or read book Cultures of Energy written by Sarah Strauss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This path-breaking volume explores cultures of energy, the underlying but under-appreciated dimensions of both crisis and innovation in resource use around the globe. Theoretical chapters situate pressing energy issues in larger conceptual frames, and ethnographic case studies reveal energy as it is imagined, used, and contested in a variety of cultural contexts. Contributors address issues including the connection between resource flows and social relationships in energy systems; cultural transformation and notions of progress and collapse; the blurring of technology and magic; social tensions that accompany energy contraction; and sociocultural changes required in affluent societies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Each of five thematic sections concludes with an integrative and provocative conversation among the authors. The volume is an ideal tool for teaching unique, contemporary, and comparative perspectives on social theories of science and technology in undergraduate and graduate courses.
Book Synopsis Macondo Well Deepwater Horizon Blowout by : National Research Council
Download or read book Macondo Well Deepwater Horizon Blowout written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blowout of the Macondo well on April 20, 2010, led to enormous consequences for the individuals involved in the drilling operations, and for their families. Eleven workers on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig lost their lives and 16 others were seriously injured. There were also enormous consequences for the companies involved in the drilling operations, to the Gulf of Mexico environment, and to the economy of the region and beyond. The flow continued for nearly 3 months before the well could be completely killed, during which time, nearly 5 million barrels of oil spilled into the gulf. Macondo Well-Deepwater Horizon Blowout examines the causes of the blowout and provides a series of recommendations, for both the oil and gas industry and government regulators, intended to reduce the likelihood and impact of any future losses of well control during offshore drilling. According to this report, companies involved in offshore drilling should take a "system safety" approach to anticipating and managing possible dangers at every level of operation-from ensuring the integrity of wells to designing blowout preventers that function under all foreseeable conditions-in order to reduce the risk of another accident as catastrophic as the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. In addition, an enhanced regulatory approach should combine strong industry safety goals with mandatory oversight at critical points during drilling operations. Macondo Well-Deepwater Horizon Blowout discusses ultimate responsibility and accountability for well integrity and safety of offshore equipment, formal system safety education and training of personnel engaged in offshore drilling, and guidelines that should be established so that well designs incorporate protection against the various credible risks associated with the drilling and abandonment process. This book will be of interest to professionals in the oil and gas industry, government decision makers, environmental advocacy groups, and others who seek an understanding of the processes involved in order to ensure safety in undertakings of this nature.
Book Synopsis Corporate Social Irresponsibility by : Paula Alexander
Download or read book Corporate Social Irresponsibility written by Paula Alexander and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Social Irresponsibility focuses on ethical failures in order to relate corporate responsibility to business ethics, corporate governance, and organization effectiveness. The book advocates a strategic approach to CSR – ethical management cannot, and should not, be divorced from effective management. Corporate social responsibility has transitioned from oxymoron into a defining challenge of the twenty first century. Taking the recent financial crisis as a starting point, Alexander examines the underlying ethical and legal crises these events expose in the business world. The problems that have come to light go beyond issues of firm financial performance into the integrity of the manufacturing and marketing processes, and relations with consumers. As such, the book presents a model that resolves the apparent conflict between maximizing shareholder value, and meeting the interests of other firm stakeholders. Alexander presents a balanced view, contrasting her model with alternative approaches. The book also covers the impact of globalization on management, the ethics of outsourcing, the limits of regulation, as well as poverty alleviation and social entrepreneurship. Blending a comprehensive theoretical framework with a broad range of cases, this book covers the latest major changes in US legislation, as well as recent corporate scandals making it a valuable accompaniment to any course in CSR, business ethics, or business, government and society.
Book Synopsis Neoliberalism Economic Policy and the Collapse of the Public Sector by : Lionel D. Lyles PhD.
Download or read book Neoliberalism Economic Policy and the Collapse of the Public Sector written by Lionel D. Lyles PhD. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book demonstrates how classical liberalism was the foundation upon which Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and others wrote the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and the Bills of Rights; however, it was rolled back by 1980 and replaced with neoliberalism, which was championed by the Reagan Administration. In short, this ideology has one main aim, and that is to shrink government, cut the budgets of social programs, and give away billions of taxpayer dollars to private business in the form of tax breaks. During the Jindal administration and by the end of its first term, more than $7 billion worth of tax breaks had been given away to private business. A surplus of $1 billion left in the Louisiana treasury by outgoing governor Kathleen Blanco after Hurricane Katrina was given away by the end of the first two months of its first term. Today, the Louisiana legislature is currently facing a $650 million fiscal cliff, and no doubt, more budget cuts are in store for the Louisiana public sector.

National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The explosion that tore through the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig last April 20, as the rig's crew completed drilling the exploratory Macondo well deep under the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, began a human, economic, and environmental disaster. Eleven crew members died, and others were seriously injured, as fire engulfed and ultimately destroyed the rig. And, although the nation would not know the full scope of the disaster for weeks, the first of more than four million barrels of oil began gushing uncontrolled into the Gulf--threatening livelihoods, precious habitats, and even a unique way of life. A treasured American landscape, already battered and degraded from years of mismanagement, faced yet another blow as the oil spread and washed ashore. Five years after Hurricane Katrina, the nation was again transfixed, seemingly helpless, as this new tragedy unfolded in the Gulf. The costs from this one industrial accident are not yet fully counted, but it is already clear that the impacts on the region's natural systems and people were enormous, and that economic losses total tens of billions of dollars"--Page vi of online resource.

Download or read book Building Community Resilience to Large Oil Spills written by Melissa L. Finucane and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill was the largest in U.S. history, releasing an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The scale of the disaster motivated diverse stakeholders to examine the human dimensions of the spill and how communities' resilience to similar threats could be improved. This examination is needed because, as long as humans depend on extracting oil and gas for energy, coastal regions are at risk for spills. In this report, the authors explore how communities, government officials, nongovernmental organizations, businesses, and scientists can build community resilience to large oil spills. Researchers found mixed evidence of distress associated with the DWH disaster and a variety of factors that affected the nature and severity of people's experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bushwhacked at the Flora-Bama A Character-laden History & Tales from the Last Great American Roadhouse... The Legendary Flora-Bama Lounge & Package Store By Chris Warner with Joe Gilchrist. It has been called one of the last great American honky-tonk roadhouses, the perfect blend of beer and whiskey, laid back and wild, where you wipe your feet on the way out, an otherwise tattered, white sandy blip on the teeming gulf coast radar that for more than three decades has served as a romantic, raunchy, roadside respite for good music, good times, good views and most importantly great people. According to its uniquely colorful originator and operator, Joe Gilchrist, the legendary Flora-Bama Oyster Bar & Package Store is many things to many people...a place where all walks of life bikers, judges, professional partiers, politicians, dignitaries, derelicts, diplomats and coquettish coeds converge to embrace a special brand of unmitigated pleasure. And that s the way it should be, according to the muse-like Gilchrist, who for the past 50 years has piously lived his often-repeated mantra: Life is meant to be enjoyed. Gilchrist s simple formula for fun and frolic of bringing different people together in a beautiful spot to enjoy the universal language and tonic of music and laughter has made his tropical watering hole a global icon among expatriate dives. Playboy has called the loveable, makeshift hodgepodge of wood, rope and canvas America’s Best Beach Bar, and during Mullet Toss Weekend in April, or the ever-bustling Fourth of July weekend, you ll be lucky to find elbow room, much less an idle bar tender. In this book Joe Gilchrist tells the amazing history of the Flora-Bama, its inauspicious start, its phoenix-like rise, and tragic, near-demise at the destructive hands of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004. Moreover, Gilchrist chronicles his quixotic run as a fun-loving and free-wheeling entrepreneur during what was undeniably a much simpler time, as well as his thoughts about the uncertain future of our great country and free market capitalism, in what is today an increasingly difficult small business climate. More than a spicy expose on cherished Southern comforts untold, this book is a lasting tribute to the magical, music-filled Mecca that has entertained millions, as well as a provocative, wisdom-filled analysis of integrity of our current class of American political leadership. This book will forever alter the way you view The Bama, Joe Gilchrist, and the United States of America.
