Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a multivariate filter, we estimate potential growth rates in Chile’s mining and non-mining sectors. Estimates for the mining sector incorporate information on copper prices, whereas estimates for non-mining reflect information on inflation and unemployment rates. To better understand the drivers of potential growth, we decompose estimates into capital, labor (adjusted for human-capital and hours worked), and total-factor productivity using a production-function. Our estimates of potential output in Chile suggest that an important part of the recent growth slowdown has been structural, with potential-output growth slowing to 21⁄2 percent in recent years, although it plausibly could be higher in the medium-term.

Book Synopsis The Chilean Output Gap by : Leandro Medina
Download or read book The Chilean Output Gap written by Leandro Medina and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper estimates the potential output (and the output gap) in Chile using several different methodologies. After a structural brake in 1998, the average growth rate of potential output in Chile declined from over 7 percent to 3-4 percent in the aggregate economy, but to less than 2 percent in the natural resource sector. The contributions to aggregate potential output growth of the natural resource sector and the non-natural resource sector are estimated, finding that the contribution to growth of the natural resource sector is non-linear-increasing during the 1990s, declining during the 2000s, and turning negative in the mid-2000s-despite the monotonic decrease in the share of natural resource output in aggregate output.

Book Synopsis Chile by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Chile written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-09-29 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cornerstone of Chile’s impressive fiscal performance and strong fiscal system has been its structural balance rule. It has helped to insulate public spending from copper price cycles and improve the government’s net financial position. Chile should adopt a full-fledged medium-term fiscal framework to improve fiscal planning and provide a framework for addressing temporary deviations from the fiscal rule. Publishing additional fiscal indicators in the budget, such as the non-copper structural balance, could provide more comprehensive information on the impact of fiscal policy on the domestic demand.
Download or read book Chile's High Growth Economy written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chile has benefited from strong growth and well targeted social programs over recent years that have resulted in a reduction of poverty at all income levels. In analyzing the progress in poverty reduction made in Chile, the different dimensions of poverty, including income and access to social services are reviewed. This World Bank report updates information on development in Chile through a focus on the years 1994 - 1998. It has developed and applied a methodology for the estimate of the imputed income transfers from government subsidies in health, education, and housing for the years 1990, 1994, 1996, and 1998. Access to social services, demonstrated by reduced infant mortality, increased life expectancy, and housing availability, have shown significant improvements in the evaluation period. Despite this achievement, income inequality remains relatively high and unemployment, among younger and poorer workers, is a severe problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chile’s strong fiscal framework has served the country well. The fiscal rule has helped insulate the budgets from volatility in resource prices and economic activity. The sovereign wealth fund (SWF)—the Economic and Social Stabilization Fund (ESSF) and the Pension Reserve Fund (PRF)—was established to encourage savings over time and has provided buffers for stabilizing the economy. During the pandemic, Chile has appropriately used the ESSF to provide swift and impactful support to protect people. Recent efforts to upgrade the fiscal framework— adopt a medium-term fiscal path, formalize a prudent debt ceiling, and introduce an escape clause—can further safeguard fiscal sustainability.

Book Synopsis LAC Semiannual Report April 2015 by : Augusto de la Torre
Download or read book LAC Semiannual Report April 2015 written by Augusto de la Torre and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-04-18 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The April 2015 LAC Semiannual Report covers the short-term prospects and provides an analysis of the external factors affecting the region's economic performance. The first chapter expands on LAC's economic outlook paying special attention to the global context and its effect on LAC’s economic performance. In this first Chapter we argue that the region experienced an external shock that has shaped growth in recent years, and that this shock is likely here to stay. Chapter 2 discusses the policy space available for LAC countries as they try to accommodate to the current global context. In particular, the first part of the second Chapter discusses the rather limited monetary fiscal and monetary space currently present in the region. The second part of the Chapter argues part of this limited policy space is associated to LAC’s relatively low savings rate. Moreover, the Chapter shows that in addition to the potential positive effects that higher savings could have on policy space, it could also have a beneficial effect on long-term growth.
