Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of local food systems explores alternative definitions of local food, estimates market size and reach, describes the characteristics of local consumers and producers, and examines early indications of the economic and health impacts of local food systems. Defining ¿local¿ based on marketing arrangements, such as farmers selling directly to consumers at regional farmers¿ markets or to schools, is well recognized. Statistics suggest that local food markets account for a small, but growing, share of U.S. agricultural production. For smaller farms, direct marketing to consumers accounts for a higher percentage of their sales than for larger farms. Charts and tables.

Book Synopsis The Long-Run Labor Market Effects of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement by : Brian K. Kovak
Download or read book The Long-Run Labor Market Effects of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement written by Brian K. Kovak and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper assesses the long-run effects of the 1988 Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA) on the Canadian labor market using matched longitudinal administrative data for the years 1984-2004. We simultaneously examine the labor market effects of increased export expansion and import competition, generally finding adverse effects of Canadian tariff cuts and favorable effects of U.S. cuts, though both effects are small. Workers initially employed in industries that experienced larger Canadian tariff concessions exhibit a heightened probability of layoffs at large firms, but little impact on long-run cumulative earnings. Lower earnings and years worked at the initial employer are offset by gains in other manufacturing industries, construction, and services. Canadian workers quickly transitioned out of industries facing import competition, with the majority of industry adjustment occurring among new entrants to the labor market.

Book Synopsis Do Tariff Reductions Affect the Wages of Workers in Protected Industries? Evidence from the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement by : James Townsend

This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, I use Canadian micro-data on individual workers to investigate the effect on wages of the tariff reductions mandated by the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA). The literature on industry wage premia has revealed that the industry of employment is an important determinant of a worker's wage. My findings indicate that relative wages fell in those industries that faced the deepest tariff cuts. This effect was experienced regardless of whether or not workers belonged to a union, suggesting that CUSFTA reduced the returns to industry-specific human capital for those workers in the mostly heavily affected industries.
