Book Synopsis The Valley / Estampas del Valle by : Rolando Hinojosa
Download or read book The Valley / Estampas del Valle written by Rolando Hinojosa and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these vignettes set in the fictional county of Belken along the Texas-Mexico border in the early to mid-twentieth century, Rolando Hinojosa sketches a landscape of Mexican Texans and Anglo Texans living side by side, in good times and bad. ñThe worldÍs a drugstore: youÍll find a little bit of just about everything, and itÍs usually on sale, too. Belken County, Texas is part of the world, and so, itÍs no different; its people are packaged in cellophane and they, too, come in all sizes, shapes and in a choice of colors.î Some are brave; others are craven. Some are sharp, and some are dull. Death calls on a regular basis in this first installment of HinojosaÍs acclaimed Klail City Death Trip Series. JehÏ Malacara was seven when his mother died and nine when his father passed. He has family, but itÍs Don VÕctor Pelàez who takes him in and makes him an integral part of the Pelàez Tent Show. When la muerte comes for Don VÕctor, JehÏ is orphaned again. Others die in bar room brawls, in a clandestine amorous tryst at the local Holiday Inn and on the street. Hinojosa paints his canvas with a montage of lifeÍs eventsbirths, weddings, friendships and love affairsbut his brushwork all too frequently highlights the discrimination experienced by Mexican Americans. They lose their land to Anglos, are paid with rotten fruit for their labor and are refused admission to certain cafes. But life goes on. Young men go to war and old men remember their wars, whether the Mexican Revolution, World War II or the Korean War. This classic novel was originally published in the early 1970s as Estampas del Valle and in the early 1980s as The Valley. Frequently compared to William FaulknerÍs Yoknapatawpha and Gabriel GarcÕa MàrquezÍs Macondo, Rolando HinojosaÍs Klail City Death Trip Series is required reading for anyone interested in life along the Texas-Mexico border in the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Mobility and Family in Transnational Space by : Tatiana Ferreira
Download or read book Mobility and Family in Transnational Space written by Tatiana Ferreira and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a range of papers on transnational lives, mobility and gender studies from various disciplinary perspectives and geographical contexts, including European, African and American countries. The thirteen contributions to the volume provide insights into transnational migration and family issues, offering a renewed theoretical approach to the differing conditions in migration access in origin societies and the scope of social inclusion in the receiving countries. The diversity of the authors’ backgrounds and the range of geographical contexts allow a wider understanding of the family in the transnational space, one that considers mobility as a developmental opportunity for individuals, whose consequences in the contemporary world have not yet been sufficiently studied.

Download or read book Chicano Authors written by Bruce-Novoa and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for this book became apparent to Bruce-Novoa when he first taught a Chicano culture course in 1970. His students could find no source to satisfy their curiosity about Chicano writers' backgrounds, opinions, and attitudes. Chicano Authors: Inquiry by Interview provides that information. Fourteen leading Chicano authors respond to questions about their personal and educational backgrounds, their perception of the role of the Chicano writer, and their evaluation of the literary, linguistic, and sociocultural significance of Chicano literature. The authors included are José Antonio Villarreal, Rolando Hinojosa, Sergio Elizondo, Miguel Méndez M., Abelardo Delgado, José Montoya, Tomás Rivera, Estela Portillo, Rudolfo A. Anaya, Bernice Zamora, Ricardo Sánchez, Ron Arias, Tino Villanueva, and Alurista. Each interview is preceded by a brief introductory note which locates the author in the context of Chicano literature and provides a sense of his or her writing. Also included are a general introduction to Chicano literature, a chronological chart of publications by genre, and a selected bibliography. The volume will be an essential research tool for the student of Chicano literature and culture and a useful introduction for the general reader.

Download or read book NO TAN ARDIENTE written by Hans Faverey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-12-16 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Visualizing Fascism by : Julia Adeney Thomas
Download or read book Visualizing Fascism written by Julia Adeney Thomas and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visualizing Fascism argues that fascism was not merely a domestic menace in a few European nations, but arose as a genuinely global phenomenon in the early twentieth century. Contributors use visual materials to explore fascism's populist appeal in settings around the world, including China, Japan, South Africa, Slovakia, and Spain. This visual strategy allows readers to see the transnational rise of the right as it fed off the agitated energies of modernity and mobilized shared political and aesthetic tropes. This volume also considers the postwar aftermath as antifascist art forms were depoliticized and repurposed in the West. More commonly, analyses of fascism focus on Italy and Germany alone and on institutions like fascist parties, but that approach truncates our understanding of the way fascism was indebted to colonialism and internationalism with all their attendant grievances and aspirations. Using photography, graphic arts, architecture, monuments, and film—rather than written documents alone—produces a portable concept of fascism, useful for grappling with the upsurge of the global right a century ago—and today. Contributors. Nadya Bair, Paul D. Barclay, Ruth Ben-Ghiat, Maggie Clinton, Geoff Eley, Lutz Koepnick, Ethan Mark, Bertrand Metton, Lorena Rizzo, Julia Adeney Thomas, Claire Zimmerman
