The current study employed a multiple baseline across participants to evaluate the effectiveness of the multiple exemplar training procedures. The participants used in the study were 3 children diagnosed with Autism. The baseline phase consisted of 4-trial blocks; this was done by presenting each stimulus once for AB- relation. Participants were trained comparative relations of faster and slower with one set of stimuli, and test probes were conducted with a novel, untrained set of stimuli to evaluate the degree to which participants responding generalized. This sequence was repeated for the duration of baseline. Y/Z relation remained at low levels during baseline and was only used to see if the skill generalized. The results suggest the procedures were effective for teaching comparative relations for 3 of the 3 participants. Additionally, 3 of the participants responded correctly to the test relations, supporting the use of the procedures in prompting generalized relational responding. An implication is that we can utilize these procedures to establish relational responding in children with autism.

Book excerpt: Dissemination of evidence-based interventions for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a major challenge facing the field. Collaboration between researchers and practitioners aimed towards developing and adapting interventions with strong scientific support may aid in the widespread adoption of evidence-based intervention in community classrooms. The following three studies were motivated by teacher feedback on the use of one evidence based intervention, Pivotal Response Training (PRT), in the classroom. Two intervention components were selected for examination based on teacher report of difficulty with use and subsequent omission and observed difficulty with implementation: response to multiple cues and turn taking. Response to multiple cues was evaluated by administering a discrimination learning assessment to typically developing children to determine the age at which it is developmentally appropriate to incorporate conditional discriminations into instruction (Chapter 1). The discrimination learning assessment was also administered to children with ASD to determine the extent to which today's population of children receiving intervention services has difficulty with overselectivity (Chapter 2). Results demonstrated that typically developing children do not consistently respond to simple conditional discriminations until 36 months of age, indicating that response to multiple cues does not need to be incorporated into PRT until children with ASD reach that developmental level. Additionally, a significantly smaller percentage of children with ASD display difficulty with simple conditional discriminations than in previous studies. The turn taking component of PRT was evaluated through a single subject, alternating treatments design that examined the effects of the elements of modeling and contingency on children's communication and play behavior (Chapter 3). Results demonstrated consistent patterns in children's behavior based on the elements of turn taking in use and the functioning level of the child. Avenues for adaptation of the multiple cues and turn taking components and methods of treatment individualization are discussed. Based on these three studies, adaptations to PRT that may support teachers' use of the strategy in the classroom may be made. This research represents a useful model for the iterative and collaborative process of gathering information from front-line practitioners, conducting basic research based on their feedback, and utilizing that basic research to inform clinical practice.

Book excerpt: Stimulus equivalence is a teaching paradigm with empirical evidence for the establishment of a variety of skills (i.e., letter and number recognition, sight word reading, face-name recognition, etc.) in typically developing and non-typically developing children and adults with different levels of functioning. Simple and complex conditional discrimination training have both been demonstrated to be effective. However, the effectiveness of the two procedures has not been directly compared. The present study investigated the relative effectiveness of these two procedures to establish sight word reading and rudimentary reading comprehension to one typically developing children and two children with autism. An adapted alternating treatments design was implemented, whereby stimulus sets were assigned to either a simple-sample or complex-sample condition. The percentage of correct responses was scored for each training condition, and the number of trial blocks required to reach criterion was compared to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the two conditions. Generalization probes were conducted for all three participants, and maintenance probes were conducted two weeks following the end of training for two of the three participants. Results indicate that complex sample training was more efficient than simple sample training with all three participants. Also, all participants scored higher on their post-training probes compared to their pre-training probes in both conditions which demonstrates utility of stimulus equivalence.

Six preschoolers, ages 3-6 years, diagnosed with autism participated in two experiments on the effects of simple or complex instructional language on the children's acquisition and generalization of receptive language tasks. Each session in Experiment I consisted of 10 discrete discrimination training trials in which the teacher used either simplified instructional language (e.g., "pencil" for an object identification task) or complex language (e.g., "Remember, balls are fun to throw and play catch with. Can you find the one?") for each trial. The dependent variable was the number of sessions required to master an item (at least 90% correct responses for two consecutive sessions). Results of Experiment I showed all children learned receptive tasks in fewer sessions when their teachers used simple instructional language rather than complex language. In Experiment II, the teacher presented items with simple language that the child had mastered with complex language in Experiment I, and vice versa. Results of Experiment II showed that the youngest children (3 years old) were more accurate when responding to simple language for items that had been taught with complex language in Experiment I. The oldest children (6 years old) responded with 100% accuracy to complex and simple instructions. The children who were 4 years old showed no difference in responding between simple and complex instructions.

All three participants were previously diagnosed with autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Using a multiple baseline design, participants were first exposed to a preference assessment, a naturalistic baseline and a choice baseline. A relational responding task was then introduced, which attempted to alter the functions of contextual cues associated with 'more than' and 'less than'. A choice baseline was re-administered to support the transformation of functions and the larger, delayed reinforcer was thinned within a second choice baseline. A final preference assessment was completed that showed an increase in preference of a previously least-preferred task. Results of the procedure showed an increase of self-control, task compliance and task preference. Suggestions for future research and limitations of the study are also discussed.
