Book excerpt: Forest managers in New Brunswick have shown a renewed interest in the management of natural conifer regeneration. One requirement in the management of natural balsam fir and spruce regeneration is an assessment method to determine the acceptability of such seedlings. This paper documents the experimental design, methodology, and establishment of a 5-year study whose objective is to relate damage characteristics of natural advance balsam fir and spruce regeneration to survival and growth in recent cutovers in northeastern New Brunswick. The purpose of this study is to develop a decision key for the assessment of balsam fir and spruce natural regeneration for survival, growth, and crop tree potential in routine surveys done on recent cultures.

The purpose of the survey was to assess the health and growth of natural spruce and balsam fir regeneration, and in particular to determine the incidence of damage, type of injury, and occurrence of decay. This report presents the results of the survey, indicating the degree of damage and healing by age of tree, the ability of advance regeneration to respond with favorable growth, and the extent of decay and its relation to wood discoloration. Appendices include data on damage frequencies, growth characteristics, and age distribution.
