Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials in Art In the writing of these essays at different periods the author has had the valuable assistance of different English and American friends who have improved the linguistic form for his ideas, but as many parts have been changed again at later occasions, it would not be just to mention names in this connection; only that Of Mr. Clive Bell should not be omitted because he has taken an active part in the final arrangement of the book which probably never would have been published but for his particular assistance and encouragement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials in Mechanical Drawing This brief treatment of the essentials of mechanical drawing is designed to give instruction in the rudiments of plan drawing as it occurs in everyday life, so that the student will be able to read and understand ordinary drawings and be able to do ordinary mechanical sketching. The book should be of value also to one who is about to take a longer course in drawing, for it aims to correct the common mistakes of the beginner. Where work is given without the regular instruments, it is well to provide the students with small drawing boards about 12 X 18 inches in size, together with a T square. This equipment makes for more rapid and accurate work. The bottom edge of the drawing board can be planed square with the left side so that the T square may be used for both horizontal and vertical lines. The lists of exercises offered are merely suggestive. Where possible it is best to have drawings made from the object itself rather than from another drawing. This is possible even in the drafting room, in institutions where shop work is given, for one can there secure enough joints or other woodwork so that at least every two students will have the object on the drafting table. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Search for Form: A Fundamental Approach to Art IN the search for form - when sincere and honest - the action is twofold: to create form; and to diagnose the created form. Accordingly, as the artist proceeds with his creation, there simultaneously develops a rationalizing yet unwritten analysis Of the work. This analysis is a personal meditation, characteristic of the individual and therefore independent Of the thoughts Of Others. Nevertheless, the nearer the thoughts Of the individual approach indispensable funda mentals, the closer will they contact the thoughts of Others engaged in the same search. During the many years of my work in the field of art in general and in architecture in particular, I have always tried to approach my problems in accordance with this two fold procedure: through work, and then through an analytic criticism of this work. This analytic criticism has been a natural discipline springing from the work itself - for my self only - and not an intentional systematizing of thought for Others to follow. This dual procedure, I felt, was essential, particularly in my case, as conditions began to spin about myself and my efforts. For those years - from 1894 to 1897 - during which I got my first dope [sic] in Classical architecture, coincided with those very years when it finally became evident that the Classical form after all is not the form to be used for con temporary purpose, but that our time must develop an architectural form Of its own. So was the reasoning in for ward-looking circles - and, for sure, forward-looking circles are the only criterion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Poetry The point of view maintained in the present volume was reached in the course of discussions with a class of students of English literature in Harvard University. Much of whatever value the ideas here presented may possess is due to the questions and criticisms offered by members of the class, and by a few friends to whom they have been submitted. The form in which they now appear is practically that in which they were delivered as lectures at the Lowell Institute in the spring of 1911. I have taken some pains to remove the more obvious traces of oral delivery, but I fear that it has not been possible to disguise altogether the didactic tone due to their academic origin. Book excerpt: An accessible and attractive beginner’s guide to getting the most out of looking at pictures Beautifully illustrated with some of the world’s greatest pictures, from cave paintings and Roman mosaics to Picasso and Damien Hirst, this affordable guide explains the art of looking at and understanding pictures, equipping the reader with the vision and tools to approach any museum picture with confidence. Looking at pictures can be an exciting or moving experience, but some pictures—often the most rewarding—require some explanation before they can be fully understood. Delving into the origins, designs, and themes of over one hundred pictures from different periods and places, this book illuminates the art of looking at—and talking about—pictures. Susan Woodford shows how one can read a picture by examining the formal and stylistic devices used by an artist, and she explores popular themes and subject matter, and the relationship of pictures to the societies that produced them. This indispensable guide is supplemented by a glossary of key terms, ranging from art movements and technical terms to religious and classical terminology, to give readers all the information they need at their fingertips.
