Download or read book Transmitted Light Microscopy of Rock-Forming Minerals written by Susanne Theodora Schmidt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a guide of optical mineralogy for beginners and microscopists who need to brush up their knowledge. It allows the fast identification of common rock-forming minerals in a thin section using a polarized light microscope and transmitted plane and cross polarized light. The book summarizes essential principles of optical mineralogy in numerous schemes. It explains, with the aid of more than 1000 microscopic images, how to determine the diagnostic optical characteristics of a mineral in a thin section. Seventy-two mineral plates of sixty-five common rock-forming minerals comprising typical microscopic images in plane and cross polarized light illustrate the most important optical and crystallographic parameters and their diagnostic characteristics and typical appearance in various geological settings. The original approach of the book is to facilitate mineral identification by mineral plates organized according to color in transmitted plane polarized light and, in each color category, according to decreasing maximum birefringence in cross polarized light. In addition, two chapters are devoted to the classification of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and their common mineral parageneses and textures. The book reflects the author’s experience of teaching optical mineralogy in the most efficient way possible to generations of students at the Universities of Heidelberg (Germany), Basel (Switzerland), and Geneva (Switzerland).

Download or read book Tables for the Determination of the Rock-Forming Minerals written by F. Lewinson-Lessing and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for the Determination of the Rock-Forming Minerals: With a Chapter on the Petrological Microscope There is probably no branch of geology in which an unaided student has more difficulty in making a start than in the microscopic study of rocks. This is especially to be regretted, as it is now recognised that this method of research is indispensable for any accurate work on the igneous rocks. Many a resident on the great volcanic plateaux of India, Africa, or America, or on the vast tracts of gneiss and schists which form such a large proportion of the earth's crust, is debarred from geological work by the difficulty of identifying minerals under the microscope. Thus our knowledge of many of these areas is very deficient, for they are only known by occasional rapid traverses; and the problems they present are so complex that they can only be fully worked out by a resident or by a thorough survey. Elementary students feel the difficulty, though they have the advantage of personal instruction. Probably every one who has tried elementary teaching in geology has felt the need of some simple book of reference. The elaborate tables of Rosenbusch and Michel Levy and Lacroix are, of course, perfect in their way, but they are really summaries of the characters of the minerals rather than guides to their rapid determination. With these, if one knows the name of a mineral, its characters can be at once ascertained; but what the student usually requires is the reverse process. He can recognise the characters of a mineral by the microscope, and from these he wants to know its name. The previous tables afford little assistance in doing this. Professor L winson-Lessing has now supplied this want by a set of tables arranged on what may be called the "dichotomous method." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petrographical Tables: An Aid to the Microscopical Determination of Rock-Forming Minerals The mean index of refraction is n: 2 E denotes the apparent optic axial angle, or angle between the optic axes measured in air. The expression p v (under the head of dispersion) indicates that the optic axial angle for red rays is smaller than that for violet p 1/ that it is greater.' Book Synopsis Optical Mineralogy by : Colin D Gribble
Download or read book Optical Mineralogy written by Colin D Gribble and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering theory and practice, this wide-ranging introductory textbook covers the main optical properties of rock-forming minerals that can be recognized under the polarizing microscope. The authors elucidate the basic elements of microscopy, the theory of light transmission through translucent minerals, and the properties of light reflected from opaque minerals. They discuss properties of the main silicate and non-silicate minerals, both translucent and opaque and how the optical properties may be used to identify a mineral. The book features many diagrams, summary tables, and four pages of color illustrations, making it an ideal textbook as well as an authoritative reference.
