Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials and Non-Essentials of the Catholic Religion Yet many remain where they are, outside the Ark of Salvation (at least as regards visible communion) because of some strange misunderstanding of what they would be expected to believe and to do if they sub mitted to the Church's authority. It is in the hope of helping such souls that this series of papers is written. Let me say at the outset that nothing is further from my mind than any desire to dilute or minimize in the slightest degree the obligations of Catholics in matters of faith or practice. To do so would be not only most disloyal to the divinely appointed authority of the Church, but also a very foolish and short sighted proceeding, which could produce only disastrous results. This broadly ecumenical work will interest students of church history or theology as well as adult Christian education classes in church settings. Sidebars identify major personalities and concepts, and each chapter concludes with discussion questions and suggestions for further reading.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catholic Atlas, or Digest of Catholic Theology: Comprehending Fundamentals of Religion, Summary of Catholic Doctrine, Means of Grace, Perfection With Its Rules and Counsels, Worship and Its Laws Thou wilt find somewhat in this book that will disagree with thee. And in what it disagrees with thee thou wilt find thy most advantage. If it be not writ by the Spirit mayest thou be enlightened to the answering thereof to thy profit. What cometh of the Spirit will profit if thou hast that gracious humility which hath ever been the crown and glory of a Christianly disposed mind. There be many books of human making the author has consulted in forming this, but that whereby he has most profited is the Holy Scriptures, interpreted by the common consciousness of Apostolic Christendom and made vital by meditation and prayer. For all lovers of Jesus agree in this that the doctrine of the cross is best learnt in the companionship of those most closely united to Him and at the foot of the cross. The dispositions of our time have engendered much disputation, and more indifference, along with widespread rejection of the Christian faith, which is a suggestive and peace-composing sign as betokening that the reign of evil is coming to an end, for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. The three principal forms of assault wear the livery and mask of science, of higher criticism, and of modern thought; yet the truths for which two stand make them rather champions of the faith than its opponents. As the discovery of the Copernican system was found not to contradict the Scriptures, so the discoveries of to-day in geology and of the process of evolution do not contradict them. As it was not declared in Scripture that the world was made in six days, for the sun and moon did not appear till the fourth, the word written in the rocks does not contradict that written in Genesis. The evolutionary process in the formation of the universe only implies method and the intelligence of the immanent Energy in directing it. The reign of law requires a lawgiver, whose laws, being of His own making, are His and not He their servant. They are but like the keys of an instrument on which the Divine Hand, bringing out new harmonies, plays. In the presence of the new knowledge that all matter is but the expression of electricity and any so-called element is changeable into another, the objections to certain miracles in the New Testament practically cease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truths of the Catholic Religion, Vol. 2: Proved From Scripture Alone, in a Series of Popular Discourses Chiefly Addressed to Non-Catholics The Doctrine of the Catholic Church, regarding the veneration of relics, is thus denned by the Fathers of the Council of Trent. The Holy Synod decrees: "That the bodies of holy martyrs and of others now living with Christ, which were the members of Christ and the temples of the Holy Spirit, and which shall be raised by him to eternal life and be glorified, are to be venerated by the faithful. Through them many benefits are bestowed on men by God; so that they who affirm that no veneration and honour are due to the relics of Saints, or that to honour them and other sacred monuments is useless, as likewise to celebrate the memories of Saints in order to obtain their aid, are absolutely to be condemned, as the Church has condemned and does condemn them." - Sess. xxv. de Invocat. SS. In these relics we Catholics do not imagine any inherent power, any supernatural and divine efficacy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church in China: From 1860 to 1907 But this condition is by no means fulfilled, as, far from coinciding in essentials, they are not even agreed in the primary statement of what constitutes those essentials. Were this division confined to Christendom the evil would still be sufficiently serious but when it is carried into the presence of the non-christian world, the harm becomes vastly augmented. For the heathen - by which term non-christians are usually described - not unnaturally asks Why should we adopt Christianity when its very teachers cannot agree among themselves as to wherein precisely it consists? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Religion: Being the Grounds of the Catholic Faith The object of the following pages is to give in a brief space an outline of the grounds of the Catholic religion. The argument pre supposes three things: (i) Belief in the existence of God, the Creator of the universe and Of man (2) the spirituality of the human soul and (3) the validity of the pro cesses of human reason. The first two can be proved (see Bibliography at the end), although considerations of space forbid their treatment here; the third is not capable of proof, for any proof must assume and involve the conclusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Doctrine of Grace IT is very generally admitted that at the present day there is a widespread desire among Catholics for instruction regarding the truths of their religion. Those preachers are the most sought after whose sermons are known to convey positive teaching as to the faith while for the purely hortatory sermon, however good of its kind, there is little demand. Nor is this state of things confined to English-speaking peoples. Even in those countries in which the oratorical style was at one time regarded as essential to good preaching, the more homely instruction seems to be now largely taking its place. The reason for this is not hard to see. There has never, perhaps, been a time when the Catholic religion was more canvassed and discussed than at the present day. Men see that it alone has held its ground unshaken by the tremendous religious disintegration of the nineteenth century; that the crisis which seemed to threaten all belief in religion has. Catholicism can mystify or even repel other Christians, while its complexities can confuse Catholics themselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kreeft considers all the fundamental elements of Christianity and Catholicism, explaining, defending and showing their relevance to our life and the world's yearnings. Here is a book to help you understand your faith more fully and to explain it to others more winningly. Like every religion, this faith has three aspects, corresponding to the three parts of the soul and filling the innate needs of all three parts. Kreeft uses these three divisions as the basic outline for his Christian apologetics. First, every religion has some beliefs, whether expressed in creeds or not, something for the intellect to know. Second, every religion has some duty or deed, some practice of program, some moral or ethical code, something for the will to choose. Finally, every religion has some liturgy, some worship, some "church", something for the body and the concrete imagination and the aesthetic sense to work at. Creed, Code and Cult; Words, Works and Worship, are a most useful way of outlining any religious faith, including the Catholic Faith of Christians. "These essays were written for Catholics by a Catholic. But I believe that nearly everything I say here will be found by the orthodox Biblical Protestant reader to be his faith as well: That solid and substantial core that C.S. Lewis called "mere Christianity" Peter Kreeft
