Book excerpt: Everything You Need to Know about DBT Tools for Treating At Risk Adolescents in a Practical, Accessible format Dialectic behaviour therapy (DBT) is a powerful, evidence-based techniques for mental health conditions. If you work with adolescents who exhibit at-risk behavior, such as extreme moodiness, aggression, eating disorders, substance abuse, or even self-harm, then you know how important it is to take immediate action. However, treating troubled adolescents can be challenging. This book provides an over-view of DBT applications that can be used to treat an array of issues that at-risk adolescents face. The skills adolescents learn now can have a life-long impact. By showing them how to manage their emotions and deal with the stresses that are common in day-to-day life, you can help give these adolescents the tools they need to succeed and thrive. Also included are handouts, case examples and sample of therapist-client dialogue that can be used in individual therapy sessions, skills training groups, school settings, and when working with parents and caregivers. This book focuses on strategies that you can use in individual client sessions, while outlining the four core skills that form the backbone of DBT: distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

Far more radical in its conclusions than his 1966 study The Downfall of Cartesianism (a slightly revised version of which forms the main body of the current work), Watson argues that Descartes's ontology is incoherent and vacuous, his epistemology deceptive, and his theology unorthodox--indeed, that Descartes knows nothing.

Book excerpt: In a sustained study of the Sophist and Statesman, this book explores the use of paradigm, logos, and myth. Plato introduces in these dialogues the term “paradigm” to signify an image or model that can be used to yield insight into higher, ethical realities that are themselves beyond direct visual portrayal. He employs the term to signify an inductive example that can be defined. Finally, Plato shows how to rework existing narrative and myth to an ethically appropriate end. Since this exercise in the Statesman is described as training in dialectic, in Paradigm, Logos, and Myth in Plato's Sophist and Statesman Conor Barry demonstrates how these later works expand the compass of dialectic beyond narrow conceptions that restrict the scope of dialectic to the use of logical techniques. Rather, dialectic is the practice of dialogue as portrayed in the Platonic dialogues, which can involve appeal to analogies and figurative expressions in the search for an understanding of the ethical good. Plato’s dialogues, as works of literary art, aim to lead people to seek such understanding. Nevertheless, insofar as the dialogues are themselves artistic productions, they must also be objects of critical scrutiny and questioning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to investigate the topic of Substance and Attribute. The way leading to this aim is a dialogue between Islamic and Western Philosophy. Our project is motivated by the observation that the historical roots of Islamic and of Western Philosophy are very similar. Thus some of the articles in this volume are dedicated to the history of philosophy, in Islamic thinking as well as in Western traditions. But the dialogue between Islamic and Western Philosophy is not only an historical issue, it also has systematic relevance for actual philosophical questions. The topic Substance and Attribute particularly has an important history in both traditions; and it has systematic relevance for the actual ontological debate. The volume includes contributions (among others) by Hans Burkhardt, Hans Kraml, Muhammad Legenhausen, Michal Loux, Pedro Schmechtig, Muhammad Shomali, Erwin Tegtmeier, and Daniel von Wachter.

Book excerpt: This study focuses on the metaphysics of the great Arabic philosopher Avicenna (or Ibn Sīnā, d. 1037 C.E.). More specifically, it delves into Avicenna’s theory of quiddity or essence, a topic which seized the attention of thinkers both during the medieval and modern periods. Building on recent contributions in Avicennian studies, this book proposes a new and comprehensive interpretation of Avicenna’s theory of ‘the pure quiddity’ (also known as ‘the quiddity in itself’) and of its ontology. The study provides a careful philological analysis of key passages gleaned from the primary sources in Arabic and a close philosophical contextualization of Avicenna’s doctrines in light of the legacy of ancient Greek philosophy in Islam and the early development of Arabic philosophy (falsafah) and theology (kalām). The study pays particular attention to how Avicenna’s theory of quiddity relates to the ancient Greek philosophical discussion about the universals or common things and Mu’tazilite ontology. Its main thesis is that Avicenna articulated a sophisticated doctrine of the ontology of essence in light of Greek and Bahshamite sources, which decisively shaped subsequent intellectual history in Islam and the Latin West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do I need to learn about CBT and/or the Person-centred Approach? What can these techniques contribute to my counselling training and practice? This book has some of the answers, showing humanistic, CBT and integrative therapists how to get to grips with each other′s approaches. CBT has become more fully present in the therapeutic landscape and therapists from other modalities are increasingly being required to understand or even train in the approach. Responding to this growing pressure for change, Person-centred therapist Roger Casemore joins forces with Jeremy Tudway. Together they show how counsellors can respect and value each other′s approaches by more clearly understanding the similarities and differences in theory, philosophy and practice. They clarify how therapists draw upon this knowledge in their practice without betraying the values of their core approach. This book is recommended for anyone studying Person-centred or CBT modules on counselling & psychotherapy courses, or experienced practitioners wishing to adapt their practice for NHS settings. Roger Casemore is currently an Associate Fellow in Lifelong Learning at the University of Warwick and has a private practice as a therapist and supervisor of other therapists, based in Worcester. Jeremy Tudway is a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist and a director of Phoenix Psychological Services, Warwickshire. In addition to this he lectures in CBT at the University of Warwick.
