Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Education, English Studies, and Shakespeare In the present stage of Shakespearian study, I suppose it would hardly do, even in a book designed for school use, to leave the matter of textual comment and textual correction altogether untouched. Accordingly there will be found, at the end of the play, a body of critical Norm, wherein I have drawn together whatever seemed necessary or desirable to be said in the way of textual criticism, and of comment on such particulars of textual correction as are here admitted. In doing this, I have almost unavoidably been led to note a few instances of different readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare's As You Like It is a play without a theme. Instead, it repeatedly poses one question in a variety of forms: What if the world were other than it is? As You Like It is a set of experiments in which its characters conditionally change an aspect of their world and see what comes of it: what if I were not a girl but a man? What if I were not a duke, but someone like Robin Hood? What if I were a deer? "What would you say to me now an [that is, "if"] I were your very, very Rosalind?" (4.1.64-65). "Much virtue in 'if'," as one of its characters declares near the play's end; 'if' is virtual. It releases force even if the force is not that of what is the case. Change one thing in the world, the play asks, and how else does everything change? In As You Like It, unlike Shakespeare's other plays, the characters themselves are both experiment and experimenters. They assert something about the world that they know is not the case, and their fictions let them explore what would happen if it were-and not only if it were, but something, not otherwise apparent, about how it is now. What is as you like it? What is it that you, or anyone, really likes or wants? The characters of As You Like It stand in 'if' as at a hinge of thought and action, conscious that they desire something, not wholly capable of getting it, not even able to say what it is. Their awareness that the world could be different than it is, is a step towards making it something that they wish it to be, and towards learning what that would be. Their audiences are not exempt. As You Like It doesn't tell us that it knows what we like and will give it to us. It pushes us to find out. Over the course of the play, characters and audiences experiment with other ways the world could be and come closer to learning what they do like, and how their world can be more as they like it. By exploring ways the world can be different than it is, the characters of As You Like It strive to make the world a place in which they can be at home, not as a utopia-Arden may promise that, but certainly doesn't fulfill it-but as an ongoing work of living. We get a sense at the play's end not that things have been settled once and for all, but that the characters have taken time to breathe-to live in their new situations until they discover better ones, or until they discover newer desires. As You Like It, in other words, is a kind of essay: a set of tests or attempts to be differently in the world, and to see what happens. These essays in As If: As You Like It, originally commissioned as an introductory guide for students, actors, and admirers of the play, trace the force and virtue of someof the claims of the play that run counter to what is the case-its 'ifs.' William N. West is Associate Professor of English, Classics, and Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University, where he is also chair of the Department of Classics and co-editor of the journal Renaissance Drama. He is co-editor (with Helen Higbee) of Robert Weimann's Author's Pen and Actor's Voice: Writing and Playing in Shakespeare's Theatre (Cambridge, 2000) and (with Bryan Reynolds) of Rematerializing Shakespeare: Authority and Representation on the Early Modern Stage (Palgrave, 2005). In addition to his book Theatres and Encyclopedias in Early Modern Europe (2002), he has recently published articles on Romeo and Juliet's understudies, irony and encyclopedic writing before and after the Enlightenment, Ophelia's intertheatricality (with Gina Bloom and Anston Bosman), humanism and the resistance to theology, Shakespeare's matter, and conversation as a theory of knowledge in Browne's Pseudodoxia. His work has been supported by grants from the NEH and the Beinecke, Folger, Huntington, and Newberry libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers a short, spirited defense of rhetoric and the liberal arts as catalysts for precision, invention, and empathy in today's world. The author, a professor of Shakespeare studies at a liberal arts college and a parent of school-age children, argues that high-stakes testing and a culture of assessment have altered how and what students are taught, as courses across the arts, humanities, and sciences increasingly are set aside to make room for joyless, mechanical reading and math instruction. Students have been robbed of a complete education, their imaginations stunted by this myopic focus on bare literacy and numeracy. Education is about thinking, Newstok argues, rather than the mastery of a set of rigidly defined skills, and the seemingly rigid pedagogy of the English Renaissance produced some of the most compelling and influential examples of liberated thinking. Each of the fourteen chapters explores an essential element of Shakespeare's world and work, aligns it with the ideas of other thinkers and writers in modern times, and suggests opportunities for further reading. Chapters on craft, technology, attention, freedom, and related topics combine past and present ideas about education to build a case for the value of the past, the pleasure of thinking, and the limitations of modern educational practices and prejudices"--

Book excerpt: Argues that the Essais of Montaigne were a crucial factor in the composition of later Shakespearean dramaA new way of accounting for the different sorts of plays that Shakespeare wrote later in his careerA detailed history of the literary-critical interest in the Montaigne-Shakespeare connection, from the eighteenth century to the present dayCase studies that, through sustained close-readings of Montaigne's essays and Shakespeare's plays, shows the shared concerns of the authorsA new approach that differs from the more typical method of looking merely for verbal echoes, resulting in a deeper, richer sense of the way that Shakespeare's reading of Montaigne shaped his writingIn this revisionist study, Peter G. Platt provides a detailed history of the literary-critical interest in the Montaigne-Shakespeare connection from the eighteenth century to the present day. Through sustained close-readings of Montaigne's essays and Shakespeare's plays, Platt explores both authors' approaches to self, knowledge and form that stress fractures, interruptions and alternatives. While the change in monarchy, the revived interest in judicial rhetoric and the alterations in Shakespeare's acting company helped shape plays such as Measure for Measure, King Lear and The Tempest, this book contends that Shakespeare's reading of Montaigne is an under-recognised driving force in these later plays.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on English Education: Together With Some Observations on the Present Mode of Teaching the English Language Our language is generally taught in such a way as to establish a. Habit of reading without thinking, ' when this habit is confirmed (which is very soon the case) the pupil will pass his eyes over and pronounce a number of paragraphs in a book, without there being awakened in his mind one idea in a hundred intended to be convey ed by the words. That this is the fact every person of the least re fiection must acknowledge - Thequestion then only remains, how is this monstrous and pernicious habit acquired a question of such weight as to merit a serious consideration. At the threshold ofour answer to this enquiry, we shall lay it down as an axiom, that all our permanent habits whether intellectual or moral, owe their origin to our early impressions and exercises. This is a standard truth, and admonishes us to be careful to begin well if we wish to go on well. Train up a child said a wise man in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not de part from it. - Of all our schools those for small children should be conducted by the most competent teachers who should be gener ously encouraged and handsomely remunerated. This however is far from being the case and the present mode 'of domestic educa tion, either in a moral or intellectual point of view, is also very de fective, and forms a miserable introduction to the scholastic course; Much of this is at present unavoidable, since many'parents are un fortunately ignorant of every parental duty, but that of feeding and clothing their children. Should not such parents live under a gov ernment controlled by the laws of Lycurgus, and deliver up their offspring to be brought up by its parental hand But to return to our question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Essays on Education Our idea has been this: at a time of much educational enterprise and unrest, we believed that it would be advisable to collect the opinions of a few experienced teachers and administrators upon certain questions of the theory and motive of education which lie a little beneath the surface. To deal with current and practical problems does not seem the first need at present. Just now, work is both common as well as fashionable; most people are doing their best; and, if anything, the danger is that organisation should outrun foresight and intelligence. Moreover a weakening of the old compulsion of the classics has resulted, not in perfect freedom, but in a tendency on the part of some scientific enthusiasts simply to substitute compulsory science for compulsory literature, when the real question rather is whether obligatory subjects should not be diminished as far as possible, and more sympathetic attention given to faculty and aptitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Essays of Education, Areopagitica the Commonwealth This book has been prepared primarily for the use of my students of Milton, but it will, I trust, be helpful to all those who care to know more of a great poet and teacher of men. A part of Milton's prose is hardly worth the labor of reading to-day, because it deals with questions pertaining solely to the seventeenth century, and because it is weighted with the mannerisms of his age in violence of language and in involved method of argument. Some of his prose all students of literature should know, in order to see and feel its relation to his poetry; they should feel the large rise and swell of the prose periods, the richness of imagination, the fervor of feeling, the wide learning, and the nice, discriminating choice of words. They should read it, moreover, to compare Milton's mode of thought and expression with that of the present time. Most students are, in reality, trained in eye and ear by the reading of newspapers and magazines. Their conception of the use of English words, of the English sentence and paragraph, is largely formed from such sources. The reading of the best of Milton's noble and dignified prose is, therefore, illuminating and salutary. I have chosen the three pamphlets given because they discuss problems which are still of living interest to us. There is no more vital question, nor one upon which there is more disagreement of opinion, than upon the right method of educating our youth. The freedom of printing is to-day practically settled, but so profound is the influence of the press that we are concerned to know the steps by which it attained its freedom and power.
