Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writer: A Series of Original Essays; Moral and Amusing The following essays were written weekly, and published in the Boston Spectator, during the period, or a part of the period of the late war. In those times of political distress, there was scarcely a subject which did not mix more or less with politics. These papers were an attempt at perfect neutrality, and an endeavor to beguile and quiet the mind, almost continually harrassed by party spirit and party dissentions. Why they are now collected together, and obtruded upon the public again, the Author has no very good reason to offer - It will perhaps, be said, that it is with the foolish desire of making a book - To this then he will plead guilty, and throw himself upon the mercy of the court; only observing in excuse, that if he has added nothing to the stores of wit or learning, he has at least endeavored to discountenance vice, and to promote the cause of virtue and religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Moral, Political, and Literary, Vol. 1 of 2 Most of the principles, and reasonings, contained in this volume, were published in a work in three volumes, called A Treatise of Human Nature A work which the Author had projected before he College, and which he wrote and published not long after. But not finding it successful, he was sensible of his error in going to the press too early, and he cast the whole anew in the following pieces, where some negligences in his former reasoning and more in the expres sion, are, he hopes, corrected. Yet several writers, who have honoured the Author's Philosophy with answers, have taken care to direct all their batteries against the juvenile work, which the Author never acknowledged, and have affected to triumph in any advantages, which, they imagined. They had obtained over it: A practice very contrary to all rules of candour and fairodealing, and a strong instance of those polemical artifices, which a bigotted zeal thinks itself author ised to employ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Moral and Entertaining, Vol. 1 of 2: On the Various Faculties and Passions of the Human Mind Nature would never corrupt us: We administer all the helps of industry and art to provoke our appetites, and to inflame our blood, and then we accuse nature for leading us into excesses; we kindle that fire that kindles our lust with a liceu tious diet, and then fan it into a flame with Oh scene discourses, and revile nature that it will not permit us to be chaste; we provoke and cherish our anger with unchristian principles of revenge, and then inveigh against nature for making us choleric: when, God knows, the little good we have in us, we owe only to the integrity of our na ture; which hath restrained us from many vices which our passions would hurry us into. Very many men, have remained or become temperate, by the very nauseating and aversion that nature bath to surfeits and excesses; and others have been restrained from making wicked attempts, by the horror and trembling that nature hath suggested to them in the approach. Many excellent men have grown to rare perfections in knowledge and in practice, to great learning, great wisdom, great virtue, without ever having felt the least repug nance in their 'nature to interrupt them in their progress; on the contrary their inclinations have been strengthened, their vivacity increased, from the very impulsion of their nature: but we may reasonably believe, that never man made a great. Truth may perha 3 come to the price of a pearl, that showeth est by day; but it will not rise to the price of a diamond or car buncle, that showeth best in varied lights. A mixture of a lie doth eve1 add pleasure. Doth any man doubt, that if there were taken out of men's minds vain opinions, flattering hopes, false valuations, imaginations as one, would, and the like, but it would leave the minds of a number of men poor shrunken things, full of melancholy and indisposition, and unpleasing to themselves?
